We have the National Register of Historic Places. Localized areas may have others. For example, we have the Bluegrass Trust which marks historical buildings in our area as well.

Your system isn't that good - you are still pulling down Danvers (Sorry). Chris...
We all had ostriches. My dad had an ostrich farm! I remember one day someone came in and said the high altitude bombing of Kosovo had been a limited success, so we all went out and celebrated… by killing an ostrich and boiling it in kiwi fruit. |

You can't measure the demolishment of one structure to be the end-all for a historic register that has saved thousands of other buildings and locations.

You can if in your country that same structure would have had automatic historical protection, due to its age. Chris...

Part of the problem with the DSH demolition, is the fact that regardless of any official historical protection, and in spite of the legal action that has come against the developers, Avalon Bay has basically bribed the local government. They tip-toed around the legal proceedings, and have received permission to demolish the building without the general public knowing. It's not the Nation Registry that's failed, it's greed and corruption in the local courts.

Yeah the real estate market is shady here. I'm glad that private developers were denied the right to claim eminent domain for commercial property, it would've only made it that much easier to get what they want without going through the property owners and courts.

| | | See, knocking down a listed building here (especially one the size of Dahhhhnvers) would get you a good few years in the jail. And you can try and bribe whichever local authority you care to name. Anyways, I'm not mentioning this to rub salt in wounds, just that I think this is a crying shame... A genuinely historic building with so much to offer... Danvers... Knocked down!???
Good example right here, we all know this place:
Gartloch Asylum, Glasgow. Now it's been converted into an apartment complex - with every original architectural feature of the building kept pretty much as is. Don't get me wrong, the body that owned this building (the NHS) would have loved nothing more than to tear the place down and sell the land. But they couldn't... And they can't. If it can work here in this manner, the wee tiny island that is the UK - I don't see the huge insurmountable problem with it working in the US? This is why we HAVE history... Because we try and keep it. Chris...

| | | Imagine buying that place and turning into a big paintball game area, building and all. On the serious side though, how much do you think it would cost to save? How much is the property worth? Who owns it?

Real estate is shady EVERYWHERE! Over in Vermont, the realtors over there would set fire to their parents to sell a tasty piece of land, landmark or not. DEVELOP DEVELOP DEVELOP!!!! Here in the Adirondacks, it's the same damn way. The only thing that slows the developers down is the Adirondack Park Agency. You have to get by those hard-nosed pricks to even make a parking lot somewhere. They've managed to keep condominiums, golf courses, rich people playground equipment in check. Most classic buildings here get torched by redneck retard fuckheads. Samurai

it's a crock of shit. (tearing the asylum down, i mean) I happened to like the movie, but probably just because of the creepy setting. can't really remember much about the plot. i always wanted to watch the movie again with my boyfriend, just so he could see how cool the place is.
I'm the sucker. |

| | | Canada isn't doing so well in the "keeping our history alive" bit. Last I heard WPH, in Ontario, was being turned to dust. I've seen far too many buildings in rural Ontario be wiped down so that 'burbs could be put in place. Just a thought. As far as Session 9 goes: Loved it.

Apparently the Nat'l Register of Historic Places doesn't apply when you're dealing with a company like Avalon Bay, the largest real estate developer in the US. They suck. I think a large part of the problem is that no one realizes it's coming down. I'd say over 90% of people in MA know about Danvers. It's the "nuthouse on the hill" to everyone. People are so used to it just sitting up there stagnant, and thinking that it's haunted or something, that they don't realize it could be coming down. Everyone I tell about the sale and impending demo is astonished, and says something to the effect of "Isn't it a historic building though? It's illegal!!!"

...or burned to the ground by 13-year olds, and then turned into old age homes. That's why I think the motto for exploring in Ontario should be "Get 'em while they're hot!". You turn your back on a historical building, and two seconds later it's either a parking lot or a Starbucks. C.
