Nike Missile Base Lorton VA

I was just checking this area out on Google Earth, by car, and online research, and it looks like it might be interesting to those nearby (not sure if its worth a trip yet.)

Has anyone been there? If you want to G-Earth it, its between Hooes and Lorton on Furnace Road.

Just curious what anyone thinks of it and if anyone wants to check it out. Best ideas I would think of is to park at the Shopping Center on Lorton, next to the Comfort Inn (1.5 mi hike), and hike it, or to park in the housing development, there's no real good places to park besides that.

Some info I found... Notes by users posted on a nike site

Control Site
S of Silver Brook and VA 600 ((P)District of Columbia maintenance yard)
[{Brown, R} {Sept. 2000} The IFC area is part of the maximum security prison which is still in operation with plenty of "No Trespassing" signs, etc. I havent been able to make out any structures from the road (Silverbrook Rd.) that look like they belong to the former Nike IFC. By the way, the GSA has a web site with some pictures of the barracks. The address is: http://propertydisposal.gsa.gov/lorton/ ]
[{Page, T} GPS=38-43-15, 77-14-42 - TerraServer ]

Launcher Site
Hooes Rd and VA 611 ((P) District of Columbia minimum security prison)
[{Morales, R} Sept '99 - ... W-64, Lorton, VA was demolished about 2months ago as part of the on-going shutdown and demolition of the Lorton prison facility. ...]
[{Brown, R} {Sept. 2000} ... site has not been completed obliterated. There appears to be 2 remaining barracks buildings and the magazine/elevators may still be there. Newer buildings were built around the site. The site is enclosed in razor-wire fencing since it is now a former minimum security prison. The launcher area was used as a juvenile detention center. GSA (General Services Admin) has possesion of the property and they patrol it frequently. ]

Thank you, I plan on exploring it coming soon, probably just doing the 2 mile hike from my house. I'll post up anything I get when it happens.

I looked at aerial photos of the lorton prison area and didnt see anything that looked like nike silo/magazine doors. I think this was a "double site" too which means 6 silos/magazines which should definitely be noticable from the air. They may be gone.

thats right down the street from where I work, Ill have to check it out when I have time. That's kind of a nice deal too since it's right next to Lorton Prison.

The barracks is still up, http://www.coldwar...cal_location2.html , when I drove past I didn't see anything though, but there are a bunch of trees possibly blocking the view.

I looked on google earth for it, try coordinates
38* 42'19.76 N
77* 14'45.82 W

that looks like it could be something abandoned and grown over

Hello,
I'm new on this UE board but not in the realm of exploration. I reside about a couple of minutes drive from Lorton and have visited a small section of what use to be Nike Missile site. There's a plaque with little history of this site and there's also a concrete foundation but I'm sure the good stuff is somewhere beyond this fence. They're stripping most of the Lorton's Prison property and new homes are popping up like weeds, including a new school. I'd like to explore this site (what use to be Nike) with anyone who's interesting. According to the Dec issue of the South County Chronicle newspaper, they will be building a Cold War Museum sometime in 2007.

Someone please correct me but a third party told me this site was being torn down a few years back. I don't know what if anything is still there other then some of the foundations.

I've been back here before. Nothing much there, but I did see several vechiles parked in the back half. Wackenhut does seem to go around this area so just be careful if you go in, they might not be around when you go in, but they always turn up when you enter a prison part.
