Ok, so what are the chances high of getting caught during the day ( mid-afternoon) going to Lower Bay?

Just post here when you plan on going, and someone from Toronto who has the TTC security scrambler can use the right code to make sure the cameras down there go blind.

Decoy, you have that list of codes, right? I think they've switched the alpha series to an xk-27 precursor, so remember you need to broadcast the jamming signal to channel 7, subchannel depends on what time he goes in to Lower Bay.

So as long as that is done, TunnelXplorer, you'll be perfectly safe to go whenever you want.

xk-27 precursor huh? Didn't know that they'd switched... still, it shouldn't be a problem. As far as subchannels go, are they still parallel skipping by three on the hour?

Good call - I had forgotten about that. Well, wait until TunnelXplorer decides to go, and then hit it for the usual bracketed timespan, and he'll be fine.

It's unlikely that you'll hear anything about train movements over the wayside - most trains that use lower bay will get their instructions over the phone before they leave the yard. Security gets sensitive information over the phone as well, so I wouldn't count on hearing "158 West, attend Museum station for a report of unauthorized persons at track level".

Counting on trains appearing like that is a recipe for disaster. In reality, they are much closer together than that, and very often you'll have trains tailgating each other. So just as one enters and leaves museum, you could have two or three more in the span of less than a minute.

Not to mention dangers from exploding insulator pots, track fires, electrical ground faults (where the two running rails become electrically charged), moving switches, you name it. It's NOT safe, don't be under the impression that it is.

I agree with this, because if you happen to list to channel one on the TTC supervisor system, you will often "158 Central" please call me at control. Or sometimes you will hear a call to respond to Bay Lower, for a security check, it depends who's on control desk.

True. Often you can stand around on a platform and see one out of service train go by you. Less than a minute an in service train comes flying through or a work car.

My friend in the Maintenance Department at the TTC has told me before that working on the track level is not easy, as you have to be well trained on how to cross the tracks, show signs to the trains that are oncoming that there is a worker down there. Plus the wind speed in the tunnel is enough to throw you around.

EDIT: Realigned paragraphs in post, due to mistake in replying to thread.

When I was out there, they were also running a looped feed for at around an hour in the afternoon around lunch, and then around dinner since they know that people do monitor the radios for info, so they started looping some recorded broadcasts so while the guys are on their meal breaks, it still seems like people are actively around certain areas and will think they can't get in when really it's the best time...

Good point, Jester. I remember you talking about that at OPEX'94. Mealtimes (mid-day and dinner time) were when they faked transmission chatter. Another good thing to take into consideration.

Personally I prefer to surf in on top of an active run, they slow enough on the way up to Museum that you can roll off onto the bay lower platform. It's better to jump up and grab a sprinkler pipe though, that way the passengers don't see you. From there you just shimmy over to the platform and hope the camera jammer is working.

Edit: and remember to take a whiz on the third rail, I hear it's quite stimulating.

What about an after hours or late night attempt to reach lower bay?

Does anyone know the levels of security and train activity then?

I did Lower Bay a few weeks ago. It was remarkably easy. Essentially if a train comes thru, you should lie down on the ledge at the side. This will give you clearance and lower your centre of gravity to avoid being blown off your feet.

Its a bit nervewracking the first time because of all the noise from the live tunnels above.

I realise that this is a dodgy subject... but ive got to say, this location has been bady fearmongered. You could get caught if you were foolish or very unlucky...

Saying that, a train did come thru Lower Bay while i was there, but i was able to hide. If you cant hide, ensure you stay out of the trains way then head out as fast as you can.

If you do succeed, make sure n check out the odd, seemingly purposeless tunnels beyond the station. The platform, in all honesty is probably the least interesting part of a Lower Bay excursion.

Really though, as long as you use some common sense and your "subway detector", you'll do fine.

LAST NIGHT WAS A TERRIFYING ONE......I was well in to an hour exploring Lower Bay when suddenly approx. 9pm or so I was sitting on the cement ledge where behind me existed a stream of flowing water in the eastbound track lane past Lower Bay that connect to the Bloor/Danforth line, when suddenly a subway train comes down the opposite westbound lanes going to lower bay and continuing to museum, it sounded the horn when it was decending down to lower bay, ( I dont know why it did) I dont think the driver seen me, He stopped at lower bay and didnt even open the doors, he was there for like 2min and then it left.

As for the train laying over 2 min on the platform, it was probably waiting for the signal to turn green, in order to change lines. As I believe that signal is a manual one operated by either the tower or control.

Yeah, usually when they sound the horn, it's to alert any trackworkers to let them know there's a train passing through. I don't know if they put down the caution lights on the tracks to alert the trains to activity on the track near Bay Lower.

If the driver did see you; there would have been some special constables doing some rounds of the platform investigating what was going on there.

I don't think he saw me because the holes between the two track reach high as the middle subway windows. It was coming down through there fast, the driver just blew the horn once. After the train left Lower Bay I continued exploring for another hour then I exited up through the gray emergency exit doors that lead to Upper Bay. When I opened the door several passengers saw me, so I told them that "I waited down there for an hour and no subway came". Some were in disbelief that Bay has a second station, I was even nice to offer a tour, they rejected it.

It's actually a worse idea to do it after hours, fyi, because of the amount of work car switching that occurs during the night. Station is actually much busier during the night in terms of rail traffic.
