does anyone have info on the big yellow "for lease" nunnery on the corner of whyte avenue and 92nd street? all we know right now is that it's relatively easy to get into, has squatters, and hasn't been in use for a number of years. anything else?

Feztaa and I had talked briefly of checking the place out. We know as little as you do.

Care to elaborate or corroborate your story? I've known about this place for years, but never went in for several reasons.

As far as I know, the Nuns still own it and maintain it- they certainly did at the end of August. Although the building has had huge trouble with vandalism (smashed windows), the power is still on, and there's often a car parked out back.

good to know. I just figured from the for lease sign that's been up for a number of years that it was more or less uninhabited, but I don't know much either, really.

Actually, there is one inhabitant.... I was scouting it out and to the left of the main door, there is a smaller door, presumably an attached tool shed or something. After opening the lock I discovered a homeless person living inside, and I had woke her up. I apologized quickly left. I hope I didn't scare her away...

I've been to this building on a couple of occaisions but I have never managed an entry. The few times I've went, all the windows were boarded up tight and the doors locked. Couldn't find any entrances.

Once I went and there was some kind of contractor inside. I knocked on the front door and he answered, I asked him some questions, he didn't seem to know much about the building (eg, he knew it was for lease but didn't know what the asking price was, etc). I guess he could have been a squatter, but I doubt it. He was dressed in pretty typical "work" clothes and the place looked like it was under some renovations.

That was over a year ago, though. If access is "easy" now, maybe I'll go check it out again. Thanks for the heads up.

Found a new peace of info for you on this location.

PROJECTS
STUDENTS TO MEXICO TO BUILD HOUSES : Will present to the Club on January 26, 2005
VALLEY ZOO : Will make a presentation to our Club in the future.
PROJECT LINKS WITH GILBERT CLUB (Arizona) : Proposal by Al Reed to investigate collateral project sponsorship thereby attracting RI Foundation funding - International Service Directors will evaluate.
ROTARY VENUE : Allan Mclean from Edmonton West made a presentation on having Rotary Clubs purchase or become the main tenants of the old Nuns Residence on Whyte Avenue and 92nd Street. This building has four floors; he proposes that the top three would be occupied by the needy and assisted living with the main floor occupied by Rotary. This would give the clubs a permanent meeting space office space and storage. Don Machum and John French to make a site visit.

info from http://www.clubrun...Email.aspx?cid=455
from a dec. 2004 google cached page.

Sounds like they were very interested in the site you might be able to get more info out of the local Rotary members. Info's a bit dated but ya never know what you might find out they may still have interest in the location.

best of luck.

i have been in that building while it was operational. it belongs to the Soeur grise . an order of nuns from the french community there was a huge weaving room to make quilts and cloths... and there is a chappel on the first floor you should see the colored glass from the outside. I personally think exploring that sight would bring bad Karma onto anyone going into it... its not like its a commercial building built for capitalism...

As long as you explore ethically and treat the site with respect (like you would other abandonments), why would there be bad karma? Catholics don't believe in karma ;)

I'm sure we can get a tour of the place, If I recall they wanted 1.3 million for the building. from what I hear it's not that interesting, but worth a look.

I was looking again recently, and it appears one could climb onto the front door awning, and then onto the massive balcony lookout thing, and then in the door on the side, but it's fairly high profile, and it doesn't leave a ground floor exit.

once inside, be on the lookout for zombie Nuns, or nunjas. if it's nunjas, you're pretty much screwed. and by screwed, I mean brought to judgement by the lord himself. even if you don't believe in him, that's what happens to people who take on nunjas.

After some planning and getting out stuff ready Schematics and I mustered up the courage to walk the whole block and a half from where we were parked, and made our way inside, and it was nice and warm. We had seen a car parked behind the building, and didn't want to risk too much so we stayed as quiet as possible and avoided the first floor. It later turns out there actually was a security guard there, but was watching TV and never heard/saw us sneaking around. Overall loads of fun, we learned much about the life of nuns, and their affection for Ben and Jerry's Ice Cream (we're talkin crates of the stuff) Here are some photos I unfortunately had to crop, and host on Imageshack...ugh. Enjoy

awesome, the photos are up. anyways, I'm think I'm working 5-10:30 on thursday night, but I'll send my regards.

tips if you get inside
-carry your shoes around, because you definately want to hang out on the roof for a bit, trust me. also, there's some broken glass on the basement floor by and in the tool room.
- a good place to regroup and plan is the boiler room, because no one can hear you there.

Yeah you probably do, I probably know you too. Hopefully see you thursday, if it is sometime after 7pm, as I am incapable of functioning during the day.

Oh and Schematics if you want more photos, I can send you an e-mail with some of the panoramas and such.
