| | | | St. Mary's College "Hell House" < on 11/7/2005 7:19 PM >
| | | The Place: St. Mary’s College Also known as: "Hell House" Location: Ellicott City, MD Visited: Yes Current Owner: The listed owner in the Maryland tax system is “BCS limited Partnership”. There are also records of it being owned by a Sateesh Kumar Singh and the nonprofit “Kamakoti and Tirupati Foundation”. Background: St. Mary’s College also known as “Hell House” was originally named Mount Saint Clemens. The religious school for boys was started in the mid 1800s by a religious group calling themselves “The Redemptorists”. In 1882 a new chapel was built and encouragement from Pope Poious IX led the Redemptorists to change the name of the school to St. Mary’s College. The Redemptorists continued to operate the school until 1972 when it closed due to a decreasing number of students. In 1987 the land was split up and sold to the state and to the private investor listed above. Around this time a man known as Allen Hudson became the caretaker of the property. Hudson kept up the place best he could and chased off thrill seekers and vandals while living in a stone house on the property. Hudson was well known by the local trespassers as the mean old man with the rottweilers and a shotgun. Hudson was even charged with assault, battery and assault with the intent to murder in 1996 when he shot and critically wounded a trespasser. I don’t know what came of the charges but Hudson remained caretaker and continued living on the property. On Halloween night in 1997 the main building was burned down by vandals. The brick walls that remained were unstable and threatened the caretaker’s home if they fell, because of this the caretaker was forced by police to leave.
The property has been uninhabited since. Status: The property is abandoned with little or no activity from the owners. All of the remaining ruins have signs of fire damage and heavy vandalism. The walls are deteriorating and if you explore the ruins you risk death by falling brick. While the above ground structures remain in ruin you can find that some of the basement or underground levels still exist. There is access to lower levels from the main building and from a structure maybe 100' away from the main building. Im not sure if they are connected by underground tunnels. Things left on the property include the fallen/burned buildings, a burned out garage structure (caretaker's home), a smashed up greenhouse, pool house and swimming pool (maybe now filled in), a large stone staircase, a well, a large cross beneath a stone structure and a few other odds and ends. The property is frequented by people of all types beit for partying, vandalism or the occassional photographers and explorers. I don't think the police go on the property unless called but you might find them waiting at your car when you return to it. Photos: Ruins that remain of the burned main building Ruins that remain of the burned main building
Ruins that remain of the burned main building. This was the main entrance with what appears to be the framing of some type of elevator shaft.

The garage and home of the caretaker now busted up, burned and spray painted. This is also a burned up car inside, I believe its an old Datson or a Nissan.
This is a concrete slab at ground level slightly off the main building. There is a very large hole in it that reveals structure and levels below. You would never see this hole at night, wonder if anyone has fallen into it.

| | | Do the cops give you a ticket for being here? I've seen photos of some of the "monuments" that look religious to some sort left behind and would love to shoot a model on the property. Just wondering if thats easy or not.

Its possible if you let me watch! Just kidding... No we didnt get ticketed and neither have a handful of other people I know who have been there. I couldnt tell ya where to park tho, where we parked was a no parking area but the cop didnt seem to care. We told her we were taking nature pics and photographing the r/r bridge and then she actually told us about the place on the hill and suggested we check it out Too bad all cops arent that cool!

| | | I believe that Hell House was made into some type of park, and is now legal to visit during daylight hours. There was a sign near the entrance at the road saying that, not sure if the sign is still there.

That's really wierd because it was an official looking sign. I will have to check my HD at home to see if I have any pics of it. Well, I'm glad that I wasn't caught over there then. I spent a full saturday following all of the paved walkways around the place.

| | | That's awesome man. I'm partial to wandering around college campuses myself (UVA), so it's nice to see someone else into that (not that we're in short supply ). Too bad my slow internet coupled with low RAM and an Opera browser don't allow the pictures to load at an acceptable rate.

| | | This is a great write up. From what I've read, the caretaker shot at people who were there with a bat trying to get revenge for being chased off earlier that night. Where did you find out about him being forced to leave by police? If anyone wants to know more about the college, there is a book written by a former student at the historic society in Ellicott City. The book is called "Ilchester Memories". You have to read it there. I think this is the website of the place that had the book: http://www.hchsmd.org/collections_ellicotthistory.htm

| | | Some other info on "Hell House" ... I am from the area and actually work a few miles from the site. I have yet to visit it at this time. There are many local stories that go around with hell house, and the use of the property (according to local legend) has changed several times. The most common story I have found in the local myth of this place is at one point it was a finishing school for ladies. At that time, some of the religious staff fell into devil worship, and there were murders at the school some how related. While I never was able to find documents on any of the previously mentioned events, just makes for a neat story for the old ruins, and where the nickname "Hell House" came from. At one point there was a very large Cross in one of the gardens, that I have seen pictures of, I don't know if it is still there. The cross was some form of black granite. I think the only thing that has been removed is the pool due to deer drowning in it. The cross is still there...

That is a popular misconsception surrounding Mount St. Mary's. The finishing school is actually a different place altogether, it is the Patapsco Female Institute. The institute is located near Mount St. Mary's and even has a tour schedule in the spring and summer. "Hellhouse" was for young men who were going to be entering the Priesthood. The name "Hellhouse" came into play due to the building's use as a pre-seminary coupled with the overactive imagination of the locals after the place closed down.
