| | Niagara Post Office/Customs being worked on? < on 11/4/2005 8:19 PM >
| | | I drove by the old Niagara Post Office/customs house today and saw construction tape around the door and the padlock off the hasp. Anyone know if there is construction work starting there? (for more info - the Ontario heritage properties db entry: http://www.hpd.mcl...earch.asp?pid=8549 only shows the pictures in IE for me) known as 4582 Zimmerman Ave as well as 4177 Park St. (Changed in 2003)

| | | When i stumbled across this in March I also noticed the signs of construction.. Doesnt look like they've made much progress since then... I love this building.

| | | I found something recently about a "Niagara Falls International Rail Station" that a study was being worked on between the Region of Niagara and Erie County to turn a "Niagara Falls Customs House" into that. Is this that place?

So do I. I think this is a great building and am glad now to know what it is. There appears to be alot of construction material around the back but work is slow.

| | | About 10 years ago when the building was still vacant, I went to city hall in Niagara Falls and looked up the legal owers of the property. They gave me some information about the state. Aparantly (at that time) the place was pretty much gutted inside from a fire, and needed complete restoration. The basement still had the original jail cells in it as it was once a police station. Before that it was used by the British Royal Family originally in the 1800's as a vacation property. The price back then was $345,000 for the property. Since then I assume it has been sold.

| | | A few of us went there to check it out about 4 days ago. It's surrounded by fences and walls, all of which are topped and edged with barbed wire as well as a motion light but no cameras as far as I could tell. The smaller building to the left is wide open, but theres not much to see. A few shovels, empty bags, and the floor has been obliterated but there are a few beams you can walk across. The larger building is boarded and locked up tight. We're going to go back with a rope ladder or something. | | | Me, AjumTheGreat, Peep, and my other son went here recently. The previous point of entry was sealed tight so we only got into the tiny building. Later we decided to be cunning and find another way in. As we were about to walk in, I said "this is too easy." Then we heard a noise... We totally tripped the alarm. I fell down as we fled, and I told them to save themselves. Hahaha. Good times.

| | | This building on Zimmerman Ave. was also our local police station until 1974, have you ever been downstairs in Niagara Falls old city hall, there are jail cells in the basement from when it was used as a court house, not sure if it still is?
