Walter Sturdy Building

On Bayview, north of Eglinton, there is a building called the Walter Sturdy Building or the T. Walter Sturdy building ... or something like that. I've noticed that for the past few months it seems to be deteriorating ... nobody is tending to the grounds, etc. Anybody know what's going on there? I will post a picture of it tomorrow.

Is this the building across from the CNIB?

I suspect it is.

The site is closed but not abandoned yet. There is a guard station on the north side of the building. A guard is posted there 24 hours a day as far as I know. I'm not sure about the alarm situation in the building, but I suspect this place is alarmed.

Yeah, that's the place. I've noticed the security ... I've also noticed a number of cars parked out back.

As dilapidated as it is, it was a chiropractic college until about a year ago. I think they started letting maintenance go as soon as they knew they were moving, so it looks more rundown than you would expect for 1 yr of vacancy.

I think they are renting parking and there is a guy in a minivan *almost* 24hrs a day there, always beside the north end of the building. Not sure if this is primarily to police the parking or the site. They're turning it into condos anyway, as I understand it, so maybe they don't care about the interior.

Myself and a friend went there about a month or so back; the security guard seemed very nice, but would not let us wander around the exterior at the back...

Yeah, there is a security booth on the north side. The south side is pretty open though ... you have to come through the cemetery. There were quite a few cars coming out of there tonight ... but the building was completely dark inside.

They are going to build three condominiums there!! Just what the city needs.

I was there about a month ago, security guard did let us wander around, but no way he would let us in. He told us about the alarm and that he is there because some kids broke it and vandalised it. He patrols inside randomly, lights are left on randomly as well. He gave me the name of the person who is managing it right now, to call and ask for permission to get in, but this person does not exist at the number he gave me. I should go back again and talk to him again, he was very forthcoming with information.

Fencing has gone up around the building and a dumpster has been delivered. Looks like demolition will start soon.

Which is why I am going to head back there soon. My talk with the security guard led me to believe that getting in would be hard, as it is locked and alarmed, lights sometimes left on and he does random interior patrols.

But once there are holes in the wall...

P.S. Jay and Manitou, let me know when you want to go, I'm just around the corner...

There really isn't much to see, but if you're going, I'll give you a rundown of what is where.

The lowest level contains a gymnasium, with change rooms.
The next level up contains a cafeteria, what used to be the clinic (it is hard to pass some areas, as there is discarded furniture and other refuse blocking passage), hallways and some offices. The next level up contains classrooms and laboratories, as well as some large empty rooms. The highest level up contains a board room, and what at one time served as a library. Not sure what else it served as, considering the library was also located across the street in the old CNIB building?

It wasn't in great condition even before being abandonned - especially considering it is only about 40 years old. I am amazed that they keep the lights on all the time though, and waste so much energy. I think occupancy was held until middle of august last year, and I was in a few months after that. However I didn't get any pictures, so if anyone gets in before it gets torn down, I'd love to see them.

Edit: The one good thing about this building is that it is fun to get lost in. There are at least 4 sets of stairs, maybe more.

Drove by today and saw the purple Murray Demolition walls.

There are a lot of boarded up places right now around Richmond and Parliament as well. The Harbour Light Center looks to be freshly boarded up as well.

There is/was also an abandoned building on the east side of bayview, maybe 150 meters north of this location. Tiny little building, just south of Sunnybrook hospital.
