We talk about stuff to bring all to often I think. At the same time though, I love stuff, my mag-lite, my boots, my leatherman etc, but the reality is that for UE equipment is rarely needed. I used to carry a bunch of stuff like most new kids do, but by now, its just a minimag lite, water, lots of food and friends.

Also, did anyone really contemplate their first exploration and research the hobby, or did people just do it and later realize others did it too?

I mainly keep my minimag, some water, inhaler and gloves. GIB swears be his headlamp thingy he bought at Sam's Club. Since he's our pointman and resident EMT (all licensed and everything) being able to work hands free is key, for him at least.

Never did any reasearch on the hobby. Hell, I thought I was totally in this alone until about '98 or so when I found Ninj's site by mistake.

Oh yeah, welcome aboard Chris!!

One more thing, why did everyone get so pissed about swearing? Since when do poeple care care about that on here?

My first time in an abandoned building both my flashlights almost died, hence my recommendation of LED flashlights. My first time in a steam tunnel I happened to be dressed for cool weather, but used my jacket sleeves to climb hot-to-the-touch metal ladders whereas I should have brought gloves. I got debris in my hair and nearly in my eyes my first time lifting a manhole cover from the underside, hence my recommendation of a hat and safety glasses. I'm sure there are some UEers who've explored abandoned buildings but not drains, or drains but not steam tunnels, or steam tunnels and drains but not buildings, etc. and would benefit from lists.

The swearing bothers me because I don't think it's appropriate. I'd expect a list for getting drunk and vandalizing abandoned buildings to be sprinkled with profanity, but not a list for UE as we know it.

"Every sound shall end in silence, but the silence never dies." - from Samuel Miller Hagemen, found written on the wall of an abandoned building

Now that I think about it, you don't really need anything on that list. When I above-ground ue, I just wear some clothes I don't mind getting wet, and a walking stick.

You're 13, what do you need a walking stick for? =P

Mostly to scare off squatters if they're hostile. Plus, it's useful when you're walking up a steep slope or something, and is good to rest/lean on if you've been walking a long time. I sometimes bring it draining (it's just a sturdy stick I made waterproof, to some degree).

Seriously? A walking stick, I wanna go exploring with you! thats just funny, one of my friends always brings a pipe to smoke once we are somewhere where smoking a pipe seems ridiculous. I'm starting to picture Horus as the kid in his picture, chillin in old 1800's buildings where he would fit right in.

Someone mentioned gloves, yeah, gloves are good, there actually is a pair in my everyday backpack, so I guess I usually have them and just dont think abut them specifically for UE.

I think everyone will benefit the most by trying this UE business and taking what they themselves would've liked to have and leave what they wouldn't behind, thats more valuable than any list, although lists of stuff are damn cool, dont get me wrong.

I would add:

Dry socks.

Since very few things suck more than having to walk a long way in wet socks. It's not hard to get them wet either, one misstep into a puddle and you're DONE FOR.

Normal shopping bags are inconspicuous, take up no space in a backpack, and make great "foot condoms"... That way you don't get wet (and you can wear them with elastic if you want to wear them higher).

Yeah, but they're all rustly and make you look like a hobo. Especially if you make them out of Wonder Bread bags or something.

Do you have in-drain fashion contests? Or do you want dry feet?

Most of the people that vandalize these places survive in them for hours with nothing more than a six pack and a flashlight.

But.. IF YOU CAN'T AFFORD AN ASBESTOS RESPIRATOR. YOU ARE NOT PIMPIN'

A guy posts a list of what he recommends for UE. His grammar isn't great, and there is a little profanity, but nothing major. So, for his contribution, he gets flamed, and basically told he's an idiot. Wow! I had no idea there were so many vehement opinions about this. The guy who copped an attitude about the gay/lesbian star didn't get this much crap. Seems like he was just trying to contribute, and I thought that was kind of the purpose of having forums and calling it a UE COMMUNITY. My bad.

I have changed my personal exploring ethics code. From now on it will be: "Take only aimed shots, leave only hobo corpses." Copper scrappers, meth heads and homeless beware. The Jonsered cometh among you, bringing fear and dread.

The main problem is he doesn't have Tabi boots on his list...

It looked like a bunch of confused, overzealous decrees, written by someone who has limited experience actually spending time inside abandoned places. It doesn't make me mad, I just don't think its helpful at all.

Meh - all of what you'll need on any given UE trek is that aforementioned common sense; for most of us it seems that the latter doesn't leave much room for traipzing around an abandoned site resembling a lumbering mammal weighted down with commando gear - I like to bring as little as possible for reasons of stealth, ease of movement, and general enjoyment. A good light, a good pair of boots, my Canon, my cellphone (to be safe), and a respirator if it looks like the site merits it

Get some waterproof spray for all of your shoes. I love the stuff. I wear skater shoes and it even works on them. As long as you dont leave your foot in the water for an extended period of time, you are good.

I recently bought a pair of Thinsulate waterproof hiking boots from the dreaded Wal-Fart, 29.99.

They sit silently in the closet, tags still on, waiting for the next exploration. I've learned the hard way that old sneakers don't neccessarily have the traction, dryness and warmth that I'd like for such things.

Where in the Hammer are you from Wiccan? I used to hit the old Board of Education building on Dundurn up by Aberdeen on a regular basis - did they tear it down?

I'm in East Hamilton. Not sure about the building you're referring to but I'm sure some others from around here would know.
