| | Malls? < on 11/1/2005 12:23 PM >
| | | Has anyone gone into active malls before? I was thinking of going in to Markville Mall in Unionville. One of my friends works in the tims in there and u have to use the back tunnels to get in to it. So u could just have something and say that ur lost from getting to ur place of work because it is your first day? Just some idea. r0n22

| | | ahahahah i live just near markville! back when they had the washrooms on the bottom floor near sportcheck me and a few guys went to the back room and found the place where they stored the christmas decorations, and on the second floor right next to smithbooks theres and entrance to the back hallways that leads to something called "the mall walkers club" apparently for old people who like to wander the mall in the mornings before the stores open. thers a few things i havent seen yet but i say wear a tim ho's uniform and start wondering with the excuse that its your first day on the job. oh, and tell me if you ever find a way to get onto the roof...i know its possible but i havent found it yet.

| | | I found some closed off sections of Jackson Square in Hamilton. Not sure why they are closed off but you can peer through the glass windows on the doors that seal it and see abandoned stores, signage and stuff. The door was unlocked once but people were staring when I opened it... I don't really have the guts for public infiltration. With the construction at Centre Mall as well there is some off-limits areas to be walked around in.

I assume you're talking about the section that leads to copps... It's closed down because our downtown core is dying and they can't find the tenants to fill the entire mall. Rather than have a bunch of empty storefronts, they just "shrunk" the mall to make it look more thriving. They still open it up when there are big events at copps, because there's an indoor walkway connecting the two buildings.

| | | Hi I live in Welland, so I have been throughout the Seaway Mall and their "off limits" areas (I work at that mall, and had a friend in security show me around). Also, I've been to off-limits areas within the Pen Centre in St. Catharines (again great toi have friends who work security!). In both these cases, there is nothing really interesting to see; Seaway Mall off-limits areas are simply hallways that lead to the back of stores and utilities, and the Pen Centre is pretty much the same, other than its hallways run under the main floor and only lead to utilities, or at least from what I have seen. Anyone know any different about the malls in the Niagara Region, let me know! Nipper

| | | I went did some scouting around the mall. Nothing that interesting. I didnt go into the staff only areas, to scared for that but from what i could see the only things were about 3 trash compactors and thats about it. I remeber i did som volunteer work and they let us into the office area of the mall very intesting tho i was small i cant remeber where the entrance to that area is.

Not sure if its the same thing but you can get to one end of it from the area with the fountains where the new Baroli Caffe is. I assume its the same thing as Copps is in that general vicinity.

| | | i have visited the 'bayfield' mall in barrie when my car was being serviced at the canadian tire .. i walked all the way around the outside looked at the maps and found each stairwell and followed each of them, untill i found a maintenance hall behind some doors with paper signs saying "exit". i found a way into the storage area for the canadian tire garden center and there was a cat walk up to the second story fire exit... one could walk up the stairs and over the railing onto the roof. i walked around and saw my car in the parking lot so i left the way i came in.

| | | Malls aren't my thing so I have no reason to keep this place a secret at the moment. An mall that is at least closed and possibly abandoned sits at the southeast corner of Weston and Finch (or near the intersection). The windows and doors are boarded, the place is certainly vacant.

| | | Some "active mall" exploration I did was in the Richmond/Adelaide underground shopping concourse - part of the PATH. system. Basically Toronto's underground where CHUDs with briefcases never need to weather the indignity of natural light. For the out-of-towners:
"PATH is downtown Toronto's underground walkway linking 27 kilometres of shopping, services and entertainment. Follow PATH and you'll reach your downtown destination easily in weatherproof comfort." "According to Guinness World Records, PATH is the largest underground shopping complex with 27 km (16 miles) of shopping arcades. It has 371,600 sq. metres (4 million sq. ft) of retail space. In fact, the retail space connected to PATH rivals the West Edmonton Mall in size." |
Anyhow, there are some off-line hallways paralleling the main ones. All sorts of interesting businesses are run there. Copy shops, laundry/pressing, something that looked like mail distribution. Truck bays. All this is behind the scenes. A veritable sub-mall of businesses. No one much cared that I was poking my head into doorways. I had suit and tie for legitimate reasons at the time - and turns out that it seems to be the universal key. I'm sure PATH has much more going on that just the small section I hung out at. One TV show years ago about the behind-the-scenes showed a gigantic turntable underground where transport trucks get the 180. I haven't found that yet. Sounds like you may have wandered into the Sheraton Hotel support areas, on the north side of the Richmond-Adelaide Complex. I have to ask: "CHUDs"?

I would love to see that! Any further clues where? Up towards the Bay, maybe, or the Eaton Centre?
As I went walking, I saw a sign there, And on the sign it said “No Trespassing.” But on the other side it didn’t say nothing, That side was made for you and me. - Woody Guthrie, "This Land Is Your Land" |

| | | Cannibalistic Humanoid Underground Dwellers. Brilliant cheese horror flick from the 80s - it doesn't get much better/worse than that one. One of these days I'm going to pull a "Waydowntown" (Canadian indie flick) and try and stay entirely indoors for as long as possible.

You know what? You may be right... the particular businesses I mentioned are apt for servicing a hotel. Thanks for figuring that out.
Regarding C.H.U.D. reference... http://www.badmovies.org/movies/chud/ (fun review, some sample sounds, and a clips) It sure is handy for a drain dweller to have flashlight eyes. Maybe someday UE'ers will evolve those.

The turntable thing - there was a short lived series on Discovery or The Learning Channel - where behind-the-scenes of various man made endeavors were explored. One of the topics was the Toronto underground concourses and their normally invisible support network. I can't remember where the turntable was but then the entire area from Union Station up to City Hall could be serviceable by trucks.

Ummm... the Warden Power Centre? It's a vacant lot now, formerly Warden Woods Mall. Mixed emotions on that one... I grew up in that place, my dad worked at the Simpson's for ages, till it turned into the Bay, and the bay only lasted 3 or 4 years... then it turned into the "Power Centre" which had a Future Shop, a Micheals, and a million crappy outlet stores. After the Cineplex, Micheal's, and Future Shop left, the place went downhill, and turned into about 7 outlet stores and a Wine Rack... and was closed down in January of this year and demoed in March I beleive.

| | | Those "Power Centres" are a RioCan specialty. They all usually have a Future Shop, a Michaels, a Chapters/Indigo, often a Silver City... there's one in Ancaster (aka Meadowlands) and one in Sudbury, and I understand there are a bunch more... kind of a cookie-cutter method of building shopping centres.
