|  | | | Hey guys, I'd like to introduce myself, Anavrin. I only recently discovered the name of what I semi-regularly did, urban exploration, from a friend who recommended I google that term up.
I was introduced to it during one night when we tried riding the freight train across Vancouver two years ago. Funny thing is that we were successful, albeit for a very short five minutes before we thought we would get caught. Since then, several trips to some very surreal places have been organized, from the labyrinth and top roof of the Vancouver School of Theology, in a commandeered canoe at the campus research pond, to the steam tunnels this weekend (all of which are on campus). I never thought there was a whole society that did these things, but it's great see.
I specialize in construction sites (mostly because the campus has so many of them). In fact, that's all I have done up to this point, albeit for many many sites, for old buildings under renovations and for new ones being erected. It'd be cool to hook up with some people who well... have a car, so I can extend this hobby to off-campus. I know that Cliffhanger has a structure (with an authenticly old vehicle in its parking lot) across the street that begs you to go and explore. This means it's a good idea to go with people. I'd much rather tag along with experienced folk than not, and would be up for doing urbex anytime. So if you're in Vancouver, let me know when you're up for something.
Anyway, successfully accessed the UBC steam tunnels this weekend. There's a ton of dust there and I now believe that there actually are more than one network of steam tunnels under UBC. I'm getting rumours that the rest of it (apparently connected to the residence buildings) has been sealed off. This makes sense, considering the history of the residence buildings, its current heating system, and the supersurface clues. Aside from the tremendous dust (bring a N100 mask), the place is friendly; no chance of authority (unless you bang on the manhole covers, which we.. err, nevermind), and the place is very warm and dry. Large diameter of circular pipes line the newer sections, with very low rectangonal passages in the older parts. There are many entrances, but all of them are secured.

|  | | | anarvin... just a word of caution. People in places of authority do frequent the boards, and it's not a good idea to announce future plans in the public eye, as it can lead to unwanted entanglements...

| | | | Heh, I appreciate the advice. Keep 'em coming because the sooner I learn the way this works the less I have to learn by the hard way. Admittedly, I dislike being secretive to my identity/plans/what have you. In an idealistic way, I assume police are busy doing actual criminal policing rather than discourage people from exploring and instead spending Friday nights shitfaced somewhere sleazy. Love my liver.
Just realized I have hiked to an abandoned open pit chalk mine while rock climbing in Vantage, WA. That was pretty awesome.

| | | | Interesting, I always wanted to see the UBC tunnels. I'm a fan of construction sites, too- they often present unique opportunities.
1- In the first album (Marbles 2005 #2) what is photo 37:IMG_4967? Looks like a big cave/pit, and I'm guessing this may be where you accessed the tunnels due to construction?
2- Second album (Marbles 2005 #1) photo 1:IMG_4372; seems like a pretty bad idea to have a photo of your friend attempting a break and enter. That connection into the sewers looks pretty cool, though.
For future reference, it's a good idea not to show or discuss specific methods of entry in public forums. Thanks for posting pics.
