"Conferencing"

Hi,

This weekend I attended a math conference and noticed something interesting. At the hotel where the conference took place, the roomkey cards were shitty and kept getting reset by being held close to cell phones. Well, the interesting thing is the young lady at the counter would just immediately give you a replacement card, no questions asked, no ID checked, no nothin'. My friend and I were able to get the keycard to another friend's room by just citing her last name and room number. Sometimes they wouldn't even ask for last name, just room number.
Well, it would be extremely easy to find where conferences are held, just check departmental bulletin boards at any university of your choice. If security this lax is standard, "conferencing" could be quite a luxurious alternative to squatting while travelling, or just general purpose hotel infiltration. Because people are so busy at the conference, you could probably get away with sleeping in their room by day (for added security, it would be absolutely easy to obtain a conference schedule); if caught just say their roommate let you in. As a matter of fact, equipped with that conference schedule you could probably even get free meals!
Anyone have any thoughts on this? If I get some free time (hah! yeah right!) I might try some bolder experiments, ie, at conferences where I'm not actually a legitimate attendee

Gee, that's great to know. Now some dude can easily walk into my room and attack me whilst I slumber. I suppose I'll be looking for hotels with actual keys and not electronic key cards.

I think your case is pretty rare. Most mid to higher-end hotels have quite good quality room mag stripe cards. Me and a buddy would Inf into conferences all the time. We would get free meals, free crap they would give out, etc.

Thats been a well known fact for ages. Most times you can say you lost your key to room XXX and the people wont bat an eye. Hence the chain lock the dead bolt features etc. You cant usually walk into most rooms if someone is smart enough to use the locking features.

Not to mention that most of the cleaning staff will leave the doors open while they're working, or at least make it obvious which room they're in. It doesn't take an SE wizard to walk in and say, "Oh! I'm sorry to bother you! I just needed to brush my teeth."
Go into the bathroom. Lock the door. Wait until he/she leaves. Free hotel room.

I travel up and down the east coast 9 months out of the year.

I stay in mostly cheaper hotels, and find that most of the time a room number is all that is need to get a keycard, though your milage may vary.

EDIT:

I stayed in a pretty dumpy motel near New Haven once. It had all mechanical key doors. One night, my roomate locked my key inside. I asked the guy in the lobby if he had a copy of the key. Much to my suprise, he forked over the master key to the entire place. I brought it 5 minutes later, after poking around a bit and unlocking some doors. He didn't suspect a thing.

did you know:

some big hotel chains have been successfully sued for privacy issues for such actions?

that the door lock itself can be queried to tell the time entry was made and which card/account it was assigned to or the housekeeping, security, master etc?

that some big hotels link your account to the damn key card and stuff like your name and credit card number is actually on there?

and if your room is 209 and you hand them the card and tell them to rest your card and tell them a 211 or a different number they see that on the reader?

OK before you laugh me off the thread here I didnt believe it either, why store that info on a strip card that just needs to unlock a door? I dont know all I know is they do because I worked for an insurance company that insured several hotel chains and this kept coming up in our investigations, stupid ? yeah I think so but their info management software was set up to do it that way.

I always return or destroy my room pass cards.

One time about 5-7 years ago, I was staying with my family at some hotel. They went out to dinner but I stayed in the hotel room because I wasn't feeling too well. Anyway, I locked the door with the deadbolt and the chain, in addition to the built in magstripe lock. I unexpectedly ended up falling asleep and when my family came back they were locked out, as they were unable to wake me up. A security guy ended up coming up the room. His keycard was able to bypass the deadbolt, and after a little bit of work with a hanger he was able to bypass the chain.

snip from snopes>

Although room keys differ from hotel to hotel, a key obtained from the "Double Tree" chain that was being used for a regional Identity Theft Presentation was found to contain the following the information:

a.. Customers (your) name
b.. Customers partial home address
c.. Hotel room number
d.. Check in date and check out date
e.. Customer's (your) credit card number and expiration date!

I've been all over Canada for tournaments and whatnot, usually 7 or 8 a year, and in my experience getting into someone elses room is really easy. Stating a room number and saying your keys stopped working got me into my buddies rooms for some pranks late at night every time.

Personally though, I'd recommend using a room that is NOT in use. (less chance getting busted and much cleaner) A lot of the time they just have small box with 10 buttons and a swipe spot for new cards at the front desk. Place tape on the bottom of a few doors for a day, and later see which doors have been used, and just ask for a card for a not in use room. Rarely do they check (or have it hooked up with the computer) to see if the room is in use, because thats just dumb, nobody would ask for a key to a room that isn't in use, would they?? :p If you get busted, plead 'accident' smoothly, you had a different room and state a room that was in use.

P.S. Always use the deadbolt, the chain thing is useless. A small/dextrous hand is all you need to get past them, well, I'm sure some are harder, but I've gotten past them no problems. Keep all valuables in the safe. Make you bed before you leave (you freeloader).

Have you really tried this before or are you just guessing? They almost always ask for my last name to confirm. Maybe they do it differently where you stay though...

This is a little off topic, but it made me think of it.

One time we were hotel-exploring and a bridge tournament happened to be going on. It was huge. There were like 300 old people in a big room. And they had cookies. We made friends with some old guy who thought we were there for the tournament and kept trying to direct us to the table we should be playing at. Thank god we were able to make hime believe we were already out (not sure that can happen) and just go load up on cookies. We had been to weddings and other stuff happening at hotels, but never something where we stood out this much. Three dirty kids, one trying to make his mohawk disappear, in the middle of 300 bridge playing old people. Later someone puked and one of my friends was apparently trying to carry a keg out of the kitchen *sigh* and someone saw him so needless to say we got the hell outta there.

It happens quite frequently, you'll be (un)pleasantly surprised. I wouldn't necessarily bank on it though. If you can get the name of anyone in the hotel, then ask what room their in, you get a name with a matching room card. From there you can see how the cards system works, try giving a wrong room number or name, and if they act all confused or say something is wrong just say it was a mistake, and give the correct information.

oops, yeah I meant ask what room they're in at the front desk, as in you're "looking for a friend". And sorry for some bad grammar, I try.
