Damn scary stuff. Basically this means public spaces aren't public; unless you can prove you have business in the area you have no right to be there. Last time I checked, that's not how the laws worked (unless it can be considered "Loitering", which is the biggest load of crap law I've ever heard).

You can't do social engineering against a robot. I wouldn't normally advocate breaking anything, but if they do become common, I'll personally wreck every one I can get my hands on.

Actually, if you read the article it says: "Steve Galinsky, who started importing the cameras from America in May". So apparently the states already has em, they just might not have implemented them yet. So, be wary, and cover your face when you see a bright flash. =)

Edit: Wreck one, and they'll out 2 more up there.

One time I was in the city with a few friends. We are walking down to this one store and we see two cops on bikes. They were totally glaring at us as we walked down the sidewalk, just waiting for us to do something wrong. So we walk past them and go about our business. About a half hour later we come out, I squat down in front of the entrance of a shop near some stairs to tie my shoe. This took me about...10 seconds. So the same dick cops come up and put their bikes in front of my friends and I, barricading us. I was like "Uhh, is there a problem?" The cop starts getting all irate and started saying "Can't you kids read? Do they teach you that in school???" As he is pointed to a no loitering sign. I said that I just bent down for a second to tie my shoe. So he starts accusing me of being a runaway. About 10 more minutes of his crap goes on until he lets us go, claiming that he's already filled his quota on runaways, otherwise he would have taken me in. What really pissed me off is that it was completely unprovoked. Goddamn nazis...
This is the last thing we need, a combination of asshole law enforcement and now cameras? Little by little they are chipping away at our rights, and pretty soon there will be nothing left.

Yeah, cops suck. They tend to follow people who have long hair and drive crappy old cars.
I almost hope they start using those robotcops.. so I can smash them up with a baseball bat.

They have those here in Ottawa. My friend once got too close to a federal building one night and the camera started yelling at her to stay within a certain distance.

Smashing the cameras will only be detrimental to everyone. If a camera is smashed in one place, it only shows them that people are trying to hide something, thus making the cameras twice as necesarry. They'll put one back, and another one watching it, maybe another one watching another spot. Just try and circumvent it, like all other security. And who's gonna put one of these on an abandoned building anyway?

I read about a group in england who goes around blowing up traffic cameras, in the states they'd probably just get shot (even a paintball on the lens would work, one could use a blowgun or slingshot if they don't want to carry a paintball gun around).

A friend and I got hassled by some cops in Anchorage at the start of our road trip, we missed the closing time for the hostel and ended up sleeping in his car in an empty parking lot. The cops woke us up on the pretense of looking for someone running into the woods nearby, and told us to leave.

So by this logic, only those who have something to hide should fear being watched by the government at every moment of their lives? This is the line of thinking that leads to 1984.

I'm sorry, but I don't agree. At some point, people will have to act to protect their rights, whether that be by voting, or by civil disobediance and vandalism as a next to last resort.

"Would you like it if King George could just come in here and push you around whenever he wanted? Well, would you?"

Cameras like this are evil. I know people are always talking about the 'end times', but I really do think that we are fast moving toward a Orwellian existance. Not good, not good at all.

Nobody will not agree with the Russians, ever on anything.

I know these security cameras are evil and demonic and the end of the world and george orwell and the king of england pushing us around and all that great stuff, but i've just gotta say that if i had a big expensive company with things i needed to protect, and some little fuckfaces were messing with my shit, i'd have talking cameras too. Hell, i'd have sharks with frickin' laser beams coming out of their heads if i could.

holy run-on sentences, batman.

Sorry, chika. All we've got right now are ill-tempered sea bass. They still have the laser beams, though, so do not fret.

I, for one, do not ENJOY being photographed unless I'm aware of it. I ESPECIALLY would not like to be photographed when I'm doing something illegal (which happens more often than I'd like to admit, and let's face it, UE is illegal...).

I really don't think it matters if a camera see's you photographing abandoned buildings. The gov't is busy enough charging murders, they wouldn't waste time coming after someone armed with only a camera. UE is a pretty victimless crime. I really don't think US gov't (especially not California) has the funds to maintain a set of cameras. Obviously the public would destroy them, and they can't be cheap to install, repair or even monitor. Basically, unless you are a smasher I'd just smile for the camera, wave my own camera and carry on with my business.

I don't normally advicate stealing items - but to be quite frank, The first talking camera - and any I encounter thereafter - Will shortly become "My Talking Camera". To be displayed on my wall - known to my friends as - "My new talking camera" (or collection of talking cameras) depending..

crap like this is just asking to be given a good home on someone's basement wall.

My computer forensics teacher came up with the statistic that the average US citizen is photographed or videotaped about 5 times a day. I don't know if that's true or not, but in large cities with streetlight cameras, ATM cameras, security cameras, police dashboard cameras, webcams, etc, it could be much higher (I know when I walk into my bank or the post office I'm on 4 or 5 cameras at once just by standing in one spot).

I was out taking pictures of a big satellite dish on campus the other night, when I noticed the remote-controlled camera that watches it had swiveled around towards me (I was shining a halogen light at the dish to light it up). The camera couldn't swivel quite far enough to see me, so I helpfully moved out in front of it so they could see what I was doing and know it wasn't worth calling the cops.
