Guards & Explorers; The Game

As kids we always enjoyed playing hide and seek, cops and robbers, or some sort variation on these themes. For myself and my friends it was rebels and stormtroopers. I don't remember the last time I played something like this, though - but I was probably 12 or 13 years old. That being said, I have always thought there was something fun about reverting back to childhood games as an adult. I still enjoy a game of Hungry Hungry Hippos every once in a while, and I know people in their 30's who still dress up in costumes and play that they are knights and goblins for entire weekends.

With that in mind, MECCA is proud to present "Guards & Explorers; The Game". The gist of the game is simple - two teams gather in a pre-selected location and take on the roll of either security guards or urban explorers. The explorer team has an objective they need to carry out, and the guards' objectives are to make sure the various areas of the location remain secure, and to capture any trespassers.

This game will test the limits of your stealth, awareness, and nerves. Clumsy blind people need not apply.

THE GAME
As stated, there are two teams at any given time; the guards and the explorers. The guards team is always smaller than the explorers team, to reflect real-life situations. The game is played in multiple rounds, to allow for everyone to get a feel for what it is like to play on both sides. If numbers allow, there will also be judges wandering freely throughout the game location, making sure that the few rules that are in place are being followed.

For the explorer team, key objects will be placed throughout the location, and it is the job of the explorer team to photograph those objects and escape the notice of the guards. They will be given a staging point, and it is up to the exploration team to enter the location and leave in any way they can devise. The explorer team can only succeed by returning to their staging point with photos of the determined items. The level of their success depends on how many items they get photos of, and how many of their team escape notice of the guards.

For the guard team, their job is to patrol the location and ensure no trespassers are present. Guards will not know the placement of the explorers' objectives, nor will they know what those objectives are. Guards will not know where the explorers' staging area is. In the event of total success of the Explorers, the Guards will be notified by a judge of their total failure. Captured Explorers will be kept in a central location, so on the event of the Explorers total failure, Guards will be immediately aware of this fact.

THE RULES
1. Guards; Guards will carry FPS radios and blue or white LED lights that mark them as Guards. They cannot turn their red LEDs off at any time during the game or they can be called for cheating and the Guard team will forfeit that round. Guards are free to use other lights in conjunction with their red LEDs.

2. Explorers; Explorers are free to use or not use lights to move about. Explorers cannot use blue or white LED lights, as that may confuse members of the Guard team. Explorers are also free to use FRS radios. If an explorer does not have a camera, they must team up with an explorer who does. The only defense against capture that an Explorer is allowed to use is hiding.

3. Capture; Explorers are captured the moment that a Guard has become aware of their presence. For safety reasons, Explorers do not have the option to attempt to run from a Guard. If you have been seen, don't fool yourself into thinking you haven't been. You are free to attempt to hide or move, but you cannot run. Guards must approach an Explorer and make verbal contact with them (no shouting!) before calling the capture in on their radio. The Guard must take the Explorer to the predetermined holding area where the Explorers must stay until the completion of the round.

4. Explorer Objectives; Explorers will be given their objective items just prior to the start of a round. They will not be given the location of these items. Explorers must find these items, photograph them, and then return to their staging area without being caught. For the Explorer team to succeed completely, 50% of all members of the team must return to the staging area with at least 66% of their objectives photographed.

5. Guard Objectives; Guards patrol the game location. They can patrol at regular intervals or randomly. Guards must check in with the central location once every half an hour, with or without a captured Explorer. Guards that capture Explorers must take them to the central location immediately, and can only take one Explorer at a time. One Guard cannot capture more than one Explorer, so a Guard may need to let others go if he or she encounters more than one Explorer at once. Once the Guard team captures all the Explorers, the round is over.

6. Noise & Light; As with all explorations, noise and light must be kept to a minimum. The game will be held in a real UE location, so the usual risks apply. Players who do not abide by this rule will be asked to leave. In addition, excess noise and light may lose your team the round. Use common sense.

7. FRS Radios. Both teams are free to use FRS radios. Frequencies will be determined prior to the round and the teams are not allowed to listen in on the other team's frequency. This will be considered cheating and that team will lose the round immediately.

Rules may be amended depending on attendance and environment.

The Game will be organized as soon as it is determined that enough people are interested in attending. A meeting date, time and location will be organized where pre-game information will be dealt with before moving to the actual game location.

Please post here if you are serious about attending Guards & Explorers; The Game. All that can be said right now is that the game will most likely take place in the Kitchener-Waterloo / Cambridge / Guelph area.

This should work fine and be a lot of fun in areas where there are concentrations of UE types. Toronto and like places should be no problem. It isn't going to work so well here in New Mexico where there are only five us us and only 2 active.

Have fun and I'm jealous!

I have changed my personal exploring ethics code. From now on it will be: "Take only aimed shots, leave only hobo corpses." Copper scrappers, meth heads and homeless beware. The Jonsered cometh among you, bringing fear and dread.

Sounds like it could be fun. It might be cool setup the game like the game Ridge Runners my friends and I played when we were little (think it's also called ditchem in some parts) basically use the same setup only if of the explorers get caught they can be rescued by other explorers who tag them out of the jail without being seen themselves. It would force the guards to station someone to watch the detainees.

Also a time limit would be wise. It would keep the explorers on the move and give the guards a better chance.

My friends and I used to play manhunt at the urbex spots we knew when we were in high school. Also, all across the (active) URI campus. The whole campus, which is the size of a small town, was in-bounds. The dorms required key card entry, and if you were lucky enough to sneak into one, you were pretty much safe for the rest of the night.

Anyways, this sounds like a fun idea.
Edit: Also, I'd love to play, and I'd make a trip somewhere in New England / New York / North Jersey to do so.

For the people voting "No" or that the game needs some revisions, I'd like to hear your opinions on what those revisions would be. It would be appreciated. Thanks!

3. Capture; Explorers are captured the moment that a Guard has become aware of their presence. For safety reasons, Explorers do not have the option to attempt to run from a Guard. The Guard must take the Explorer to the predetermined holding area where the Explorers must stay until the completion of the round.

This is going to be problematic. Without a real way to verify if a guard sees someone, and no shouting allowed (for obvious reasons)is going to make a capture harder. I'm not sure I really have any good ideas to improve on this problem. It would also be less of a problem at certain types of locations. Other than my concern with the capture process I think this sounds like a lot of fun.

Hey Crossfire, I didn't vote "NO" but regarding the Capture problem outlined by J Marcs: Maybe you could have the Explorers wear coloured armbands and when the Guards approach them and make verbal contact, they could take the Explorers armband just to make sure? I don't know, just a suggestion.

I think it can work. Maybe make it so physical contact has to be made for capture *but beatings, as per a real guard who doesnt want to get fired/charged* just like touch football. If its around here, I would be in, else maybe the toronto area could organize a game?

The only problems I see are that, one, the guards KNOW there is someone trying to get in at that very moment so it would be more like tag or manhunt than actual UE. If it were, say a weekend long thing and the UE'rs could go at any time it would be more realistic but obviously that would cause other problems.

The second is the idea that the guards only have to "be aware of your presence". It think it would be better if the guard had to at least identify you and where you are at the time to be considered caught. The guards, by the nature of the game the way it is, are already aware of the UE'rs presence.

Ah, my 2 cents. Good idea, maybe needs a little more thought. I think we all played this kind of game in one way or another as kids.

This would be fun to play

I missed the second game at OPEX '04, but I played in Capture the Flag, as long as that lasted. A game like this would be fun as hell; I know CTF was, at any rate.

Yes I'm interested as well but its kind of far. If we had a group of explorers coming from Hamilton I'd be interested to join.

This would work great! In fact is sounds like another game I've run before called Mission: Impossible. The way it's laid out would work great for a group of seasoned explorers, however we could alter it in a way that it could be used by any group to do by changing the location to one that's a little more safe. I gonna use this as a suggestion for a game at PYPS. (Using my alterations of course)

As for attending...count me in!

Wow, I actually had planned to try something like this for EurOPEX!!

In the end, we filled the time with something else, as I couldn't quite figure out how to get it to work.

I like your adaption, it fills in all the blanks I had, nicely!!

We all had ostriches. My dad had an ostrich farm! I remember one day someone came in and said the high altitude bombing of Kosovo had been a limited success, so we all went out and celebrated… by killing an ostrich and boiling it in kiwi fruit.
