Large empty spaces at York Mills Subway?

Near the collector booth outside of the paid zone in the corridor heading to the west side of yonge street, i've noticed an extremely large space underground. It's locked usually..

On my way to work, i've seen construction workers doing something in there.. Took a peek, huge huge unused space.. Anyone know anything about this?

thanks

I have seen them as well...buT i have no clue. They look like teh wide gaps yous ee when the train pulls into st.george. I just assumed they were for vent shafts of for trains to wait or switch tracks.

Hmm what i'm talking about isn't at track level. It's up 1 escalator from track level where the ticket collection booth is located inside the corridor that runs underneath yonge street connecting the west side of yonge to the station.

TTC Construction Notice
York Mills Station will be retrofitted with two (2) elevators, complete with closed circuit television and intercoms, a wide fare gate and sliding doors to accommodate people with disabilities.

Elevator #1 - Presently exists in the York Mills Centre building located at the north east corner of the Yonge/York Mills intersection. This elevator will provide access between street level and the unpaid area of York Mills Station concourse level. (Some work/modifications will be undertaken to provide direct access between the elevator and the station concourse).

Elevator #2 - Will be located in the paid area in station concourse. It will provide access between the concourse level and the subway platform.

Elevator #3- Will be located in the paid area in the station concourse providing access between the bus platform and the concourse level.

TTC Construction Notice (PDF)

Possibly construction work for elevator installation. Maybe concourse access for the elevator in the York Mill Center?
Are any of the locations a match?

I confirmed this through my friend in the TTC maintenance department who said that the hoarding is indeed for elevator installation at the station.

Lawrence also has one of these large open spaces, otherwise known as Lawrence Attic. They are there due to the way the stations were built, and the fact that they are very deep underground. Either Lawrence or York Mills is the deepest in the system, I can't remember which though.

elevator 1 sounds like it's in the right position..
However, the area they're working on is just massive. Wish i knew how to get in.

I believe it was Lawrence station, though. According to the article posted at http://transit.tor.../subway/5105.shtml they say that all the stations in the north Yonge extention to Finch had a long way down to the platform. and going up the escalator or down the stairs there is much like a battle.

I can say this true for Lawrence and York Mills, having been there on numerous occasions, you could probably add Sheppard to this list too, as you have to take at least two long escalators to get to the street exit.

Lawrence and York Mills are fairly deep stations just based on how the valley is situation around that region. Sheppard is quasi-deep (nowhere near as deep as the aforementioned, but deeper than most). Finch is actually very shallow, like most of the stations on the BD line.

I wouldn't be surprised if York Mills had an attic as well due to the fact that it is the same platform design as Lawrence. It's in use right now for elevator construction, obviously, but more than likely that's been there since the station opened. Probably isn't connected to track level like the Lawrence Attic is, hence why no one managed to inf it.

Next time I have to go up that way I'll just take a look around and see if I can find anything.

And Rustblade, just a remark on your post:

York Mills is the deepest station, sea level wise.
Lawrence is the deepest in relation to the surface above it.

Cool. So I win either way! Haha. And yeah, I'm almost certain York Mills has a attic similar to Lawrence.

Makes me wonder though, why they built that convenient staircase going up to Lawrence attic? Before the asbestos crew I doubt there was really much of anything up there.

It was probably built for storage or something to that effect. Dundas West has an attic in the ceiling around the end of the westbound platform towards the exit to Keele Station; the last time I was there, a chair was plain visible, as well as some junk.

This might be worth investigating.

It's just a vent shaft, much like the ones you'll find at Lansdowne, Main, Coxwell, etc. The chair you see in there was likely placed there by a track patrol member; their office is located at Dundas West, so chances are someone has made themselves a nice hideaway.

Only stations that I know of with a true attic, that have been confirmed are Lawrence, York Mills, and St. Andrew.

St. Andrew has a small room at the very end of the stracks headed to Union. i've been in there. 9the only way to get in there is by crossing the gate. not much in there, though i didn't walk through the door that was there. I think it lead to trach level ...and as for cameras i saw none ...not even ones pointing to or around the gate.

That's not what I'm talking about. ;)

St. Andrew has an attic running between the concourse level and platform level. There are two ways into it; one from a door up by the collectors booths (it's the door right next to the usually empty collectors booth), or through the janitor room on the platform.

Sometimes you get lucky and the latter of the two is unlocked...

Track Runner, I think that door you saw just leads into a track patrol storage room. I'd need to go down that way and look at it again, but I think that's what was back there before.

My big fascination right now, however, is the stairwell in the vent shaft just south of Queen's Park Station... it's always too busy in the station to check out when I'm there, however.

Anyone know about the space on the West Side track level behind the vertical slats that make up the wall at Shepard Station (Yonge Line). You can see through at certain angles and it looks like a huge space??

I came across a site plan for York Mills station, it might help pinpoint the location discussed.

Went through York Mills station, if you go down the escalators to the subway level theres a big empty storage area above the vertical slits on the roof. Can easily be seen by looking up while going down the escalator.

Its opposite where the Lawrence attic would be.

If you're talking about the one thats almost immediately beyond the gate, it's just a stairway up to a tiny room that has a street level ventilation grate in the ceiling. When I went there it was my first time being in a subway tunnel and even I didn't find it too exciting.
