Janitors

Hi

I'm using a university as a kind of UE training wheels. One group I run into a lot is the janitors. They for the most part don't hassle me, I guess they aren't well enough trained to tell who belongs and who doesn't. Still, it's kind of awkward. This is obviously not an issue at all with abandonments or underground, but do any active-site explorers have any insight they can give on this group of people?

Once, in an active and extremely obviously off-limits steam tunnel beneath a hospital, our group was "caught" by a maintenance worker. I use quotes because he simply ignored us and walked right on by. We think he might have been a little frightened since it was 4 against one.

Often, surprise and being completely out of place works to your advantage. Sometimes people don't even see what they don't expect to be there. I have heard several explorers tell of being directly in the line of vision of someone official who simply acted as if they were invisible. Thier brain didn't even catch on that there was someone there.

I think janitors are mostly just workers who are untrained in how to deal with intruders that don't act as they might expect someone actually there for nefarious purposes to act.

So, in short, I consider janitors to be low-threat, and even useful sometimes.

I like to use janitors to get into buildings. My university locks all of its buildings at a certain time. I bang on a window or door until one comes and I tell them I forgot something in a lounge.

I dont really think they care too much if people are around. Especially the ones that work late at night. They just want to get their jobs done and head home for the most part. And if they are a student janitor, they would probably join you if they werent on duty =P.

I received maps upon maps and documentation from a janitor at the Indiana Army Ammo Plant at Charlestown. It's been mothballed for 10+ years now, and he just handed them over, provided I do not tell where I got them from. I posted only one scan of a doc on the internet and it is a poor-res version.

When I was poking around Sheridan's basements/tunnels I ran into several janitors also. But most of them already knew me as I have now worked for Sheridan twice as an employee. So just act like you belong and they should just ignore you.

from the hospital explorations ive done in the montreal area most of the hospitals are leaning slowly to aramark, a couple of the south shore hospitals have already gone there, this means that these former union positions have shifted to the private sector and they are staffed by even more disgruntled people. They dont want or have time to bother with you, they have a quota to meet if not its performance review time (my friend works for aramark in one of the hospitals and its hell) so especially in hospitals the cleaning staff are not a problem,

Could just be they aren't being paid enough to care.. as long as thier not going to get fired or your not breakin stuff that they'll hafta fix, some of them I would assume could care less if your there..
And hell could be they'll be happy to have someone to talk to if they are on the 3rd shift..

Exactly! Say hi and keep walking. They may get confused but they'll probably think you're supposed to be there.

One time I had to work as a janitor for like a month or two. And its just as some have said, if it looks like your supposed to be there then they wont bother you. but if you look dirty or strange, we'll they'll say something. think about it. if you just worked 6 hours cleaning some retards graffiti, you'd want to make sure that this person won't mess up all your hard work again.

I've had good and bad experiences with janitors. Sometimes you can beg them for access to stuff, or "social engineer" them, as in many situations they will have a set of master keys for the building. Other times you can just act like you're "more important" than them and blow past them as if you're supposed to be there. I have had experiences, however, where they complicate things by asking "why are you taking the elevator to the basement?" or overall just getting suspicious looks from them. Generally I try to avoid people on live infiltrations but usually the cleaning staff doesn't care. If you find some that are too curious a denim shirt and a big Nextel will make you look enough like their boss to get past them without any problem . ~Grit.

As long as you are in a place thats within reason (ie. a hall, room, or basement) and not in any tunnels or anything a confident stride and maybe a nice hello is all you need.

Most of the janitors (maintenance workers) whom I have come across over the last couple of years are some of the nicest people ever. Most will often give you a history lesson on what the building used to house.

Who better to ask than a Janitor, as they will most likely find these treasures and won't want to tell their boss because they might get the wrong impression.

A good example would be a janitor's closet inside a school, from the untrained eye you might think from the outside that it was a closet. Once you are inside the closet you are able to see a history of the place. Why? Most janitor closets I have been in; leglimately due to work, have clues to the past. For instance most will have the original painting on the walls, old plaster work, radiators, doors, etc...

Thought I'd just throw my $0.02 in here too.

Having been a janitor in quite a few places, with varying social structures in the past, I would argue it depends more on the location, rather than how you, as the explorer, work with the situation.

For example, in one of my jobs, at a high school, if I saw someone snooping around, going odd places and generally just looking out of place, I sure as heck was gonna find out what in the world you were doing. For all I know you're some punk trying to steal something, or at the very least you were lost.

However, at my job at the cheese factory, where, presumably everyone in there was supposed to be there, heck, you could have walked into the front office for all I could care. I'd have given you a funny look, most people wouldn't have been there when I was working, but I wouldn't have stopped you if it looked like you belong.

Those are just two examples of many I could give. So I guess what I'm trying to get at is, if you look like you're supposed to be there, in a situation where 'looking like you're supposed to be there' is an acceptable cover, you're fine. However, if you're not supposed to be there, you're probably gonna get confronted. We have a sense of love or respect for the building you're in; and in a sense share the same feelings you do with the building. However, if you're threatening us, the building, my job, or that floor I just finished mopping, we'll give you hell.

Oh, and try not to scare the hell out of us too. Nothing will get you on someone's bad side faster than if you scare the bejeebus out of them when you're sneaking around.

One must be very careful around Janitors(janitoruswitha 'broomas)when encountered in their natural environment. Though docile and humanoid in appearance, fully grown adult Janitor will become aggressive and territorial if cornered. When meeting one in the wild, avoid eye contact at all cost. Do not, I repeat do not feed a Janitor. They bring their own lunch and might perceive your kindness as a treat! At first they may appear cute and cuddly, but don't let that fool you! They are stone cold killers when pushed too far! Janitors usually preceded by a strong musky odor.So sniff air at all times! Janitors are for the most part nocturnal creatures so mind dark corners. Night vision could be extremely helpful when trying to avoid a Janitor. Just make sure you see him first! Their garb varies in color according to the policies of their habitat.

This drawing represents one of the few known images of grown adult Janitor.
Remember that face, be careful and happy UE'ing.
