[MASS] Worcester Commons Underground Labyrinth.

Hello,

I remember reading about two years ago, or just when they started re-doing the Worcester Commons in front of the city hal they started digging and they broke through to a large underground labyrinth under the commons. I believe they diagnosed it as a cistern of some sorts, but I do not believe they did much research on the subject.

The find wasn't very largely publicized but I do remember reading about it on the front-page or local section of the Worcester Telegram and Gazette. I was wondering if anyone had tried to enter this labyrinth, and if they have any pictures.

P.S - Please try and ignore my cumbersome typing, and misspellings. Writing this with the Flu.

Sincerely, Ruby

I was talking with a friend of mine yesterday and he was telling me that there use to be a canal that ran through Worcester that was long ago abandoned. It starts on Park Ave and runs under Worcester. We think that this old abandoned canal might be what is under the Fashion Outlets but aren't totally sure.

The Blackstone Canal did run through Worcester. Parts of it are covered, others are still open. They are currently attempting to restore the Canal.

However, I am near 100% positive this labyrinth under the commons has nothing to do with the Canal. One reason is because there used to be an Indian burial ground, and later a church cemetery on the same ground. I also believe the old town hall during the 1800's was located in the same location.

I have spent some time since I made this post researching this topic, and scouring over the Worcester Telegram and Gazette for a news article relating to this.

While searching through the T&G Archives I used the key-term "Cistern" and searched all the way back to 1989...

I came up with these two articles:

Common ground elusive
Published on February 21, 2002, Article 10 of 42 found.

MILLBURY -- The Town Common is a plot of grass at the intersection of Main and Elm streets. It is home to a few park benches, a beech tree and a small, dug-up corner that was once the only access to the now-fabled ``Hole.''

It also is a half-acre where good intentions are colliding. A private landscaper from Wellesley has proposed a new life for the Common, a plan that will lend year-round horticultural color to the site at minimal cost to the town.

The Millbury (Worcester Telegram & Gazette (MA), 1225 words.)

Old book held clue to Hole
Published on January 16, 2002, Article 11 of 42 found.

COLUMN: NOTES, QUOTES & ANECDOTES

The mystery of ``The Hole'' beneath the Millbury Common was solved just after Christmas, when architect Russell Swinton Oatman of Princeton concluded that the egg-shaped structure -- 7 feet high, 26 feet long, and 18 feet wide -- was a 45,000-gallon cistern built about 1875, probably for fire protection in the center of town. The structure was discovered in early November, when Highway Department workers removing earth (Worcester Telegram & Gazette (MA), 728 words.)

I'm thinking now I was wrong about the Location. I'll continue to see if I can dig any more info up.

I recently gained access to the basement of the Worcester Common Outlets and was quiet alarmed to hear a lot of voices down there. Keep in mind the building is linked to the 100 front street offices, so it might have been something to do with that.

Regardless, I plan on making another trip down there in about a week. Though thinking about it I'd rather not know why there seemed to be at least 3 people down in the basement of an abandoned mall... thought I didn't smell cat piss so I can only assume it's NOT a meth lab...

an abandoned mall...

I was there less then a year ago and maybe 40% or less of the stores were occupied. I heard it would be demolished and turned into housing. Is it closed now?

You can still walk through it I believe, but everything is vacated. The whole mall will be demolished over the next few years to make room for a urban renewal of sorts. The two office towers will remain standing however. Part of the garages's will be demolished aswell in the Spring of 2006.

On further investigation the said labyrinth is the one under the Millbury Common and NOT the Worcester Common.

Probably maintenance workers or squatters. There's alot of infrastructure down there, I was once in the basements because I at one time had connections in the office building and was able to go into restricted areas.

I would assume sqauters only because they aren't maintaining it anymore. The only thing still inside the mall is Quinsigamond Community College right where the yellow garage is. Everything else is gone... including the CVS.

As far as the infrastructure down there you ain't shitting, those hallways go EVERYWHERE.

To save some people a trip, getting to the basement isn't as easy as it used to be. All the elevators are disabled to go to that floor so you need to seek an alternate route.

As far as security I ran into an officer during the day but he was on his cell and didn't seem to mind me walking through taking pictures. At night the only people I saw were in the Quinsig College area. There are cameras all of the garage and a few inside... the garage is still used so there are people for those, but the whole time in the mall I didn't receive any trouble. Then again I was only taking pictures and not being very sketchy so you never know.

Tell me more about this Milbury Common

I really don't know much more about the Millbury Common, sadly you have to pay money to see the full articles in the T&G archive, otherwise I would read them.

I remember the Millbury Common cistern being on the news when they found it. It showed the inside, there was just a big hole in the ground where they had bashed through inside of it. I basically remember something similar to a military bunker, with red brick columns in it holding up the ceiling. I think the whole thing was made of brick actually, with arches and stuff. It actually looked like rooms that could have been inhabited by people for whatever reason.
When found it was a big mystery as to what it actually was, although a cistern was mentioned as one of the possibilities. I never heard when they figured it out for sure. Clears it up for me...
