Hi, I'm new to the forum, but I had to sign up when I saw what you've all been talking about, because I feel that warning needs to come in this case. I am very familiar with the two buildings on Shoe Factory Rd. I came across the old stone building and the farm house across the road while driving with a friend and decided that it would be perfect for an upcoming photography show I was doing. I am certain that the farm house is the abandoned house that you are speaking of. Until about I think 8 years ago, it was surrounded by a more wooded area. And it matches the pictures almost exactly from what I can tell. But I know more about the stone house across the street. We got permission from the president of the company that owns it to explore and take our photographs at our leisure. They also told us some of the history of the building. (you'd be surprised what you can do if you actually ask permission) The stone building is called the Limbergh School House. It was built in the 1920's as a school, but was shut down during the second world war and was vacant for quite some time. Surprisingly enough, after that it was occupied by a biker gang in the late 60's I believe, and after that a family lived in it in the late 70's. I DO NOT SUGGEST THAT YOU EXPLORE THIS PROPERTY!!! I admit that I know that some awful things have happened there, but the building is completely structurally unsound! The chances of getting hurt are pretty high. As soon as you walk in the front door and step on the floor, you can feel it sink and have to be very careful where you step because the whole floor is about to cave. We had a police escort of sorts for insurance reasons. I have more information on the school house and pictures, but only on request because I don't want to write a novel here. I just want to warn people to stay away or be careful. It's extremely dangerous, and it's also know to be used as a dare of sorts for admittance into a local gang. The police also patrol past at least twice an hour. Good luck and be safe

YO!! Whats up everyone? I'm Mike. Not that it matters but I was the one that posted this in www.ilgpc.com I got a few people attention, but I was reading about the other places people found. Heres something interesting:

I remember some guy back when I was in college tell me about a house out in the woods by where he lived. I think he was from Illinois. He said it was a 1920's style house. It was furnished with really old furniture and even an old black and white TV. And there was a 1940's Ford in the barn. But there was no road leading up to it. It was just out in the middle of the woods.

Was this out in the back roads near Union / Hampshire? I went into an old ass house that was some what boarded up. It was an old 2 story house. The second level stairs were literaly chopped so no one could get up there. Now Im 5' 11" @ 240 lbs. I climbed my ass up there some how some way. I was extremely tires after that. I rested for a couple of minutes and proceeded to look around. Heres where it becomes interesting. I found a closet full of untouched suits. Still in plastic. I'd say they were at least $700 suits no problem. I kinda stepped back to think about what I was doing there. I heard a loud ass thump behind me. I was like WTF!!! I turned around to see what fell. I wasnt at all sure. I saw a thick ass roll of tissue rolled up in a bunch. I looked at it and then picked it up. It had some weight to it. I opened it up and it was a spotless .38 caliber gun. It wasnt loaded. I put that back quietly and forgot about it. Lets put it this way. It seemed like someone did not want anyone on that second floor. We found wire traps and what not. I got the hell out of there. It felt weird. Like someone was watching me. Then I proceeded to go to the old wooden garage outside of the house. In there was a mint old Ford Fairlane. Untouched for at least 20 years. The dust was so thick you had to wipe it away to see the color of the car (Puke Green Color). Then I proceeded to the larger garage about 30 feet to the right of the wooden one. This was made out of metal. Kinda like the old thin metal sheds they use to build. except this thing could hold at least 6 cars in it. There werent cars in there. I saw 4 White cargo vans parked in there w/o plates. They were newer vans. After that I was afraid I was going to bet wacked if you know what I mean. Me and 2 other friends got the hell outta there and have not went back since. There was no driveway just a tiny trail made by tires. It was made to where you were not going to notice an entrance. The house was surrounded my thick trees. You could not see anything but the trees if you were on the road.

It was eerie

Since everyone was talking about Shoefactory Road. My friend Greg (Radioguy21) the one who started this thread desided to check out the Shoefactory Road Area around the old school house. We checked out the abondon house that was near the barn that burnt down. After we took some pics and went inside we left. I didnt think this was this house http://www.viewzone.com/house.html because it wasnt deep in the woods like the guy on the website said, and the color of the house was diffrent. We I got home I compared the pics of the house we visited on shoefactory road with the ones on the website and im 100% sure this wasnt the house.

Newbie here! I was at that farmhouse the day after ViperMike2002. That is definitely not the house in question. I lived less than 1/2 mile from the old school house and I knew the farmers that used that old farmhouse and the surrounding land. I lived on the eastern side of Elgin (in unicorporated Elgin), and the house everyone is looking for did not exist in that area (I lived there from the mid-80's to the mid 90's). My best guess is that it is (was) located on the west side. Hope someone finds this house! I would love to check it out.

Do you know if any of these storys are true about the old farm property?

"The haunted Silo - there is a haunted farm house with a silo. The legend is a man went crazy because he thought his wife was cheating on him, so he murdered her and his kids. He killed himself as well. There is also a five-point star located about 20 yards away from where he buried his family. The star has a dead tree at each point of the star. Apparently you can still hear noises and see something moving around in the house late at night. Even if it is 80 degrees outside you can feel a bitter uninviting chill. It is located in Barrington Illinois on shoe factory road."

"Hoffman Estates - Shoe Factory Road - first driving down the road there is a forest where you can see little children running though the woods mostly around where the lake is it is said that there had been deaths there when Hoffman was a farm town if you go a lot father you can then see a barn on the right side and it is said that seventeen years ago that a man escaped from the psycho ward and was staying in the barn but when the owners of the house found out and tried to get rid of him he killed the family and they were found hanging in the barn you can see lights on in the barn sometimes little more down you see an abandoned house on the left where a child killed his parents five years ago because they treated him like a child if you drive pass the house there are roses on the street sometimes and you can see a child playing on the steps with a knife."

I don't know about true, those stories sound like they came from the shadowlands site (which is pretty notorious for posting every, single, ghost story they receive), but there are a few pretty cool houses on Shoe Factory that are abandoned. I will actually be at the house pictured a few posts ago, this sunday, to get extensive pix of all the buildings on the grounds.

im sure the house about a block down from the one pictured has spawned its fair share of stories, due to its unusual construction and appearance.

as to whether or not there is any truth to the stories, my guess would be no, simply because i've never heard a shadowlands story (for illinois) that could hold water.

my offices are on the far west side of elgin, and i think if the house that started this thread is to be found, it will be on the west side. far more rural, with lots of forest preserves that have what would appear to be the right mix of tree species and landscape features.

unfortunately i dont have a lot of time during the day to wander around a few forests looking for it, i will definitely be living on GoogleEarth for the next few days scouring the forests for any signs of a clearing or structure in the areas i know to be possibilities.

one side note completely unrelated to the thread topic...
i am planning a trip to explore and photograph a barn that is the only one of its specific type in illinois. it is in the NRHP, so its somewhat protected. 7-8 foot fence, possible shake sensor, its in the middle of a huge empty field and located on the outskirts of a VERY MASSIVE AND VERY ACTIVE Matsushita (Panasonic) Industries complex. not sure as to when ill be going, but anyone interested can PM me and we'll set up a group outing or something.

About the biker thing, I know a few Black Pistons, Outlaws and Riding Fools. I can ask about this if you like. The only well known club house I know of though is in Joliet.

Is there any way to check the validity of the story to begin with? I re-read the story and, honestly, it sounds a little hokey. I wrote to the owners of that site, to see if there was a way to contact the author, but I doubt I'll get a response.
As for the farmhouse that ViperMike posted pics on, I was a bit misinfomred about who owned the place previously. I was thinking of another old farmhouse on Shoe Factory Rd. that was located just east of Berner Rd. I knew the people that lived there (it has since been torn down to make way for more homes-blech). Anyway, the people who owned that house used the land of the other house to farm and store their equipment. I never heard of the stories about that area, sorry. I've been in the woods surrounding the schoolhouse (I was a teenager when I lived there, so we explored!) but I never experienced anything out there.

I assume you are talking about the round barn my Panasonic, in response to above? It's pretty well protected, good luck.

Nah it's not in the DB, I drive past it all the time, never really looked worth it. As far as i know it's currently used for storage so its probably alarmed to some extent. Not sure how exciting it would be anyway.

My thoughts exactly, probably nothing groundbreaking, but i figured it'd make for some good photos. It is the only 16 sided round barn still standing in illinois, and there are plans to gut and refurbish/preserve it i believe. Wanted to get some decent shots before that happens. My office is in the complex with Jimmy's Charhouse so it is so close to where i work, that it pains me to drive past it everyday without checking it out, lol.

coincidentally, have you checked out the building thats right next to the 7-11 about a 1/4 mile down the road? Old store with the giant windows in the front, now defunct and awaiting remodel or demo.

Funny you mention that, I was in Elgin for the weekend visiting family and was taking Randall out to Crystal Lake, saw that house for the first time. Had it not been 10am I would have checked it out. Looked sealed fairly tight, but I'm sure one could get in, probably an interesting house.

Hey guys,
I live south of the city in New Lenox. Today i went out to Manteno (about an hour and a half south of Chicago) to the old abandoned mental institution. If you haven't been there yet, GO NOW! All buildings will be razed or closed for commercial development within a few weeks.
I went today and there are only a couple left standing.
I love UE and was wondering if anyone has any suggestions of where to go...
If you want to check out the manteno thing go to www.mantenostatehospital.com

email me for any outings PLEASE!

oh by the way, i am a journalist so i have a press pass that often gets me out of trouble!

I know more about blood than you

DivaMonkey---can people get in to the institution (ie can we explore) without hassle from security/police? How well protected is the area? How many buildings are left? This really got my attention!

I'm a ghost-chaser by nature, but I've gotta say, this looks like somebody's ghost story done up good on the web, with maybe a few pictures from abandonments that might not even *be* in Illinois, to spice it up.

Just what it looks like to this spook-o-phile. I could be wrong.
