| | | "Scariest Places on Earth" ? < on 10/23/2005 7:51 PM >
| | | I was just flipping through the channels and I came across a most familiar scene- a camcorder recording of the inside of some abandonment. Come to find out, it's this television show called "Scariest Places on Earth". It's an hour long show where I guess they take these families, give them cameras, and have them spend all night in these old complexes. This one took place on Poveglia Island, off the coast of Venice, Italy. I guess it used to be a refuge for plague victims. It looks pretty good, but I think it's entirely too staged. I mean, I've seen and felt some weird things while exploring before- but come on; it wouldn't be good enough to put on TV if they didn't ham it up a bit. Anyway, I'm wondering what you guys think of it? It's on the abc family channel, and it appears there's some kind of marathon on right now 15:50 EST. It looks like it will be on through 19:00, so check it out if you get a chance. Personally, I think it's a cool concept, but it's one of those things that may continue contributing to our hobby having a shorter life.

| | | I don't really think the show will have any affect on UE as a whole. The places that they take these families to are open to the public. Tours are available and so on at the locations. So unless one day they end up at a place like Pennhurst or Danvers there's really no worry here. As for the hamming it up? Oh definitely...they stage a lot of the stuff on the show. If you've ever seen MTV's FEAR it's almost identical but toned down a bit since it's on a family channel. The shows sole purpose to give the kiddies a little chill. That's about it. I wouldn't worry about something like this having any kind of impact on the hobby. FEAR didn't do anything neither will this.

| | | You can all kick me in the nuts and through stones at me now. It would seem that JFK Prep is going to be on the "Urban Legends II" episode thats on tonight. Its 7 min. long segment about the graveyard and the curse of Oswald. I cant help to blame myself, but it was going to happen sooner or later. The owner of the property is having a group called S.E.W.P.R give tours of the place. S.E.W.P.R if full of it, they stole the text from my site along with a good amount of my pictures. They claim to be non profit and everything goes to a restoration fund, but thats bull, the owner is running the place as a business. At $550,000 in the hole I guess he has to try something to get his money back.

| | | On the topic of Poveglia, which is in the venetian lagoon, I've read about it and it seems like it would be a pretty cool place to explore. Theres an abandoned hospital on it.

Yeah, that's the place they did the show I was talking about. They didn't show a whole lot of the place except a map, and some interior footage; it doesn't appear to be vandalized in any way, either. I thought the same thing about exploring it; only thing is, they installed infrared cameras to shoot some of the show- it wouldn't surprise me if they left them in there because of how many people are going to no doubt try and see all these "ghosts" and "spirits" the family on the show encountered for themselves. | | | That one is very old. Does anyone remember Fear on MTV? That show was running when Scariest Places on Earth started. They both just stopped though. But the one of the Island of No Return, that is a really old one. I had seen they had some new ones on there. But I loved that place when I first saw it. I am going to go there one day.

| | | It's kind of entertaining. Too bad it's only on at Halloween.

| | | I found the show to be very staged. I have been in alot of creepy places, seen and felt the presence of ghosts, but never anything on the level of what happens on this show! I would like to go explore some of those places they go to though! A night with two or three others in an old castle, asylym or whatever sounds like a blast!

| | | I stayed in Lido, which is evidently close to Poveglia in the Venetian lagoon. On another note, The Scariest Places on Earth filmed at my work, Eastern State Penitentiary (easternstate.org)

Of "Scariest Places on Earth"? or do you mean FEAR...there are a couple places that FEAR went to which were truely abandoned...doubt that ABC Family is going to do that...

| | | there's a show on wtn in canada that's based out of britain called Most Haunted. If you're in for a laugh, try to find it...they take a couple of perky almost-40 blondes and a barry manilow look-alike sleazeball psychic to haunted houses and inns in england and film them sitting around all night trying to make contact with the spirits. it's hilarious.
