There are some tours that go somewhere under the National Cathedral. But it's nothing too exciting if my memory serves me correctly.

Yeah, most large cathedrals have an underground area for burying dead bishops and cardinals. I went in them in the basilica in Baltimore. They are neat, but normally have alot of tourist traffic and gift shops

I have a distant relative who was a saint (like my great x gazillion uncle or something). His toe is in a relicary-dealy at some little church in Ireland. I don't know if it's true though.

This maybe a bit late. There was a mall built under NW DC that was later shut down. It was an old closed section of Metro if I recall correct. The mall was later shut down and sealed off. A few years ago they opened it for inspection or something of that nature and found a dead body. There are other ways of getting down there beside the main entrance, but not sure how.

The underground mall was at Dupont Circle. There used to be an underground tunnel for trolleys until around 1960 or so, unrelated to the Metro which is much deeper and built many years later. The area was sealed off for decades, but the steps from the street remained. Some years ago the place was turned into an underground mall that lasted, I think, for just a couple of months.

If you google on "'Dupont Circle' underground" you'll get a few hits on it including mention of the apparent murder victim found down there. I've never been down there and have no clue how you would get in there today. There's a mention in some ANC minutes of the space being re-leased in 2003 but I don't think anything came of it.

Check out the "DC Underground" site for a few descriptions of remaining transit and rail tunnels around DC.

In 1993, Dupont Down Under Associates, Inc. (DDUA), contracted with the District of Columbia to develop District-owned space underneath Dupont Circle pursuant to a ten-year master lease agreement. Simon allegedly negotiated this master lease as the sole shareholder, officer, and director of DDUA. DDUA then entered into subleases with a number of retail food outlets, planning to line the Dupont Circle underground tunnels with food carts shaped like old trolley cars. DDUA allegedly failed, however, to make various improvements to the Dupont Circle underground space as required by its leases, and the project did not meet the expectations of either the city or the food court tenants.

In 1995, the tenants instituted a rent strike, and DDUA sued the tenants for breach of their leases. Several of the tenants sued DDUA and Simon for fraud and (as to DDUA alone) breach of their subleases and the master lease. The lawsuits were consolidated for trial. Shortly before the start of trial, the tenants were permitted to amend their complaint to add a claim that Simon was liable to the same extent as DDUA under an alter ego theory.

Man, that sounds pretty cool! It sounds like it was a substantial size area down there.

Edit: Here is an article from 2003 stating possible new uses for the area:

This may be a bit late...but about the D.C. Underground mall: as somebody already posted, it was an underground mall built under Dupont Circle in the mid-90s. It had a gym, some restaurants and a club. The entrances were on the Circle. I believe there are two of them. They were designed to look like an entryway to the London Underground. [These decorations have since been removed, and all that remains is a boarded-up hole on the sidewalk...easy to miss if you don't know what you're looking for.] Due to the rent dispute mentioned before, the mall was open for less than a year. It is still there, however, it is locked up tight and the only entrances that I know of are the ones I just mentioned.

I wouldn't peg this as a good site for UE. This is in a highly populated area of D.C. There are people about all hours of the day and night. Also police and security are very good in this area making getting caught highly likely.

Every few years there is talk in the city of opening this place back up, but so far nothing has come of it.

I remember the down under... It sucked.

The two main entrances are 100% sealed, but there were other ways in... through various surrounding basements and I think there were one or two designated service corridors. I'll do my research, but don't get your hopes up.
