Prince Albert future Ghost Town?

Earlier this month Weyerhaeuser announced it is closing the PA Pulp & Paper Mill in January 2006 which employs close to 700 people. The mill is the largest employer in the small city of 35,000 people. Officials believe another 400 jobs will be lost by the companies that directly support the plant. The Prince Albert Chamber of Commerce believes all together 2000 jobs will be lost as a result.

There are some potential buyers interested in the plant, however if that falls through the impact to the small city will be catastrophic.

I am estimating that Prince Albert's unemployment rate will be in the area of 20 - 25%. I envision a mass exodus from Prince Albert leaving a UE paradise.

I personally feel sorry for the city and the province, but the explorer part of me is getting excited of the prospects of a UE hotspot.

Wow, Prince Albert already had quite a bit to do for a city of that size. Reminds me of the Kenora Mill that shut down recently.
