I started out with draining, then over the last few years did mostly aboveground/building exploration. My favorite type of site tho, is institutional type buildings, as they're usually more creepy, in a clinical sorta way, but even more interesting is there are usually tunnel networks connecting some of the buildings.
(Woodlands & Riverview mental hospitals were great for that)

Steam tunnels and storm drains are probably my favourite sites to explore and to see pictures of. Not entirely sure why that's the case, but the sense of euphoria and the wow-factor is just a lot higher for me when I'm underground. There's just something about it.
I do like checking out buildings too, but they don't excite me in the same way.

About 90% of the people I've told about draining think I'm crazy, but there's always that 10% that finds it fascinating. Maybe it's a psychological thing. I like the idea of being so far, yet so close to the normal world, almost an escapist thing I guess. My dad said that when he was underground, he felt "like a druid going into one of those burrows" (my dad really likes romanticist druidic imagery). I'm also curious about the percentage of people on this site who are drainers vs. aboveground explorers. You should read the "Second Rate Exploring" thread in the drainer's board. It talks a lot about the relationship between the two camps, if there really are two camps (which is another thing I want to find out).

I voted "Drains/Underground" because that's what got me into it.
I've always had an interest in topside stuff, however to me it's a whole different thing. The feeling being in a tunnel or underground is so different and harder to explain.
I tried explaining it in the link I put above.
Nowadays I do 50/50 above and below, but whereas topside often makes me feel nervous (I like that too  ) tunnels make me feel excited (then after a few visits relaxed).
An old hospital near my place (PANCH) was the coolest topside location and so was the Melbourne Power Station... so I suppose I should have voted for an even balance.

PS. And for anyone that thinks you can't practice photography in drains/tunnels, do a Google Image Search with the word "siologen" and get to some cool photos (a few female explorers too :p ) and "dsankt" (nice topside and underground).

I've never been to Rhode Island before, but I'm sure there are at least one or two big drains (big drains being 10' or taller). Look by the major rivers. The little streams usually lead to 6' tall drains at tallest. The drain I linked to is Fortress in Sydney. It's huge, but it is a bit of a special case. You'd be damn lucky to find something like that in the states.

Now we have a guy here in Texas (you know who you are) who has no fear what so ever above ground, a top notch explorer and one of our most aggressive infiltrators, BUT he says hes "a little nervous" about going into drains! huhuhuhuhuhu.. So we're gonna try to find a big deep dark one somewhere and watch him go claustro on it... grins and chuckles in evil fashion

Boring concrete tunnels work great for graf! I really don't care whether a drain has cool features or not. Being underground is a cool feature IMO.
