Crownsville State Hospital

I visited Crownsville for the first time yesterday and damn, I've never seen so much stuff inside an abandoned building, and by stuff I mean, anything you can think of, clothes, furniture, plates, silverware, antiques, books, lamps, electronics...cant even begin to name it all. The buildings are hard to getinto, considering they have 3 or 4 security cars driving around at all times, and there is some kind of police station on the grounds, but I still managed. The buildings are all in great shape and ALL of the former patient's stuff is still in there, it looks like a giant yard sale that never happened. When I first got in, it was kind of interesting looking through all the stuff but it got to the point that I was tired of seeing boxes filled with crap piled 10 feet high. I guess it was all of the patient's stuff that never got returned to them. I found one room full of antiques with boxes labled "save for museum." So I guess they are opening a Crownsville Museum? I found an entrance to some very old very wet tunnels which led me to 4 or 5 warehouse sized rooms full of clothes children's toys, computers, former patient's paychecks, and typewriters. They really didnt clear this place out at all and it looks like they are throwing all the patient's belongings out the windows into dumpsters. I was there for about 6 hours and didnt even begin to explore this place. I'm definately going back sometime soon now that I know how to get in and if anyone's interested in meeting up I might be able to do it. I'm going to try an get my pics put up sometime this week. This still dosent make me feel any better about Walter Reed, but it comes close.

Its being used for storage im pretty sure, thats not stuff left over from the hospital. I remember them talking about using the buildings for other community needs.

EDIT: I mean, those might be donations to some organization that are being sorted.

You might be right on that. Probably explains a good deal of the stuff being there. I found something in a newspaper in there about all of the leftover patient's clothes and possesions being stored to be sold at a yard sale and some of the items had little yard sale-like price tags on them. Either way it looks like theyre slowly trying to get it out into the dumpsters and much of it is being destroyed by water damage and the many pigeons living inside.

I went last June while they were actually in the process of moving stuff out of several buildings. I got into the food bank when I heard people on the floor above me and realized they were doing that building too, so I didn't get to stay for very long.

What suprised me was how good of shape the buildings were in, only saw one little wall with some guys name spray painted on it. I hope all the recent media attention dosent attract more people that will screw with these buildings. It seems like the black community is very hard-set on keeping the buildings from going to crap like every other state hospital that closes so I'm sure if they find alot of people breaking in, security will be stepped up like how Walter Reed is now.

I've only driven around Crownsville at this point, but I plan on going in soon.
Oh and It's my understanding that some of the buildings are still in use by private companies.

you can be one of the "well people" by making the most of your stay at glenn dale
