A few elevator tricks I have picked up here at college: With some elevators if you push and hold door close simultaneously with your floor # the elevator will not stop at any other calls. Only certain models though. Second, to call an elevator that is locked out (keycard, ect) Slide a piece of paper in-between the outer doors to jog the safety. If the elevator is on that floor the safety will open the doors. This is one way of getting around keycard locks at college.

I tried out your advice on a certain elevator on the U of T campus. Old building, I probably shouldn't say which, but I had a feeling the trick was going to work on this one. it did. I was wandering around campus late tonight. most of the buildings were locked but this one, I shouldn't mention names, the main doors were unlocked. I couldn't go any further than the main staircase and elevator bank, or the washrooms downstairs, but I had seen the elevator being serviced a little while ago and I knew it had a back door that only opened to floor 3R(rear)...or so it was to be believed.

knowing nobody but perhaps a janitor would be around at this hour, I called the elevator to the basement floor. pressed the close door button, and turned around to push open the rear door. it opened fairly easily, into a fairly small and fairly useless back room with 3 locked doors (one leading back out into the hallway from whence I came). bah, there had to be more interesting back rooms on upper levels I thoght, I know it only opens to the public on the 3rd floor (actually..was it the 3rd? I think the 3rd was wheer I opened it myself) anyhow I pressed all the numbers! to get it to take me whichever was the highest it would take me. on the way up i tried the ceiling hatch with no luck, firmly riveted shut. now on the top floor, the front doors open, nobody's in sight. I press close door, turn around again and work open the back door. to my delight I am welcomed by a large janitors closet.

I prop the back door open with a janitors wheely garbage bin, knowing that the elevator would not be called if the back door was open (i tested that in the basement) so I wouldn't be trapped in the closet. I took out my maglite (which I tend to carry everywhere now, it's a permanent resident in my bag) shine around, shiny shiny, ooh, a ladder!

it goes up, and I follow it, to an unlocked roof hatch, which I climb through onto the roof. I discover the roof for quite some time, observing little people walking below me in the playing field and the walkways. I also discover a raccoon trap..pesky raccoons making so much noise on the roof. well at least they won't suspect it's a student up there if they've had a history. I snap a couple photos to show off to the friends I had to leave (we were supposed to go to a concert, but I'm 1.5 weeks too young to get in apparently, and the bouncer was a newbie so he stuck to all the rules, this was also why i had my camera on me) watch a couple more people walking about and then decide it's time i should head back down.

I walk back toward my hatch, and coming around a piece of machiner I notice..'was it that bright inside there when I came out?...maybe my eyes are playing tricks, they've just adjusted to the dark it must be the light from the elevator being brighter than I thought.

Alas it wasn't, as I reach the hatch, I look down to see the door which was previously locked, leading out into the hallway from the closet. is now wide open, and the whole closet is lit up. I hear people talking but from without the closet, or perhaps within the elevator, investigating it's sudden disagreement with the call button. I decide I'd rather be caught outside in the hall than outside on the roof, so i should climb down as silently as possible...as soon as they move away. well I hear them shuffling outside the door, still talking, they sound old, so I figure even if I slip up and make a sound they won't hear it.

I climb down and slip out the door, noticing as I leave that the cart i left stuck in the elevator was untouched. I silently descend the stairs to the main door and see one of the two people, talking with their back to me to the other person around the corner just out of sight. the one i can see is definitely a janitor, an older woman janitor. so as quick, silently and determined as I could move, I turned the corner and went down the stairs behind them only hearing a "oh it's you" as they catch a glimpse of me leaving. after that no problems from anyone. I went on to explore several other buildings on campus, some more succesful han others. but that's for another story, and none of them involved elevator tricks (being too modern for the most part).

apologies for length, I had to tell it as soon as I got in.

Nice account of campus hacking! Elevators are very useful in these situations. Freight elevators can be very useful as well, as they often go to floors that "public" elevators don't. Be careful though - noisy and can be dangerous. ~Grit.
