| | | Here is the situation: I have found a marvelous site. Its fairly far out of town, so walking is not an option (and I can't ride a bike). The site is next to an occupied residence and across the street from a convenience store. The question is: What should I do with my car? Is it worth the risk to park onsite or at the store?

| | | Is there another store around? Can you park a couple of blocks away? SIde road? Those are a few I can think of.

| | | How about a sweet site on the edge of a busy interstate hwy? No way to park next to it without attracting attention....It's the only structure for half a mile on the access road. Any ideas?

| | | I dunno if it's a good idea or a terrible one, but what about leaving the car on the shoulder a ways a way with the hood up and a note that you ran out of gas or something and will have the car moved by night.

| | | You could ask at the residence if you could park in front of their place and explain that you want to go photograph the place across the street. I've used that several times with success.

No houses...Just flatlands on both sides of the hwy. Walking probably is the only way....It's just that it's so darn close to the IH37. I'm talking 40-50 feet. Going over the fence would be too obvious. Night raid is not an option...It's a daylight gig. Any other ideas. It's a sweet site. [last edit 9/29/2005 10:51 PM by Allva - edited 3 times]

| | | Drive a Jeep Cherokee. No, I'm serious. So many Construction/Road-Crew/Security-Guards/etc use Cherokees that they really don't look out of place. I might be a bit biased though...

Dammn, I am gonna have to remember that one, if you act all super secret mall ninja like, then folks will worry. But if you are FAIRLY upfront about your intentions then if anybody says anything about you to them, then they will just say somthing about you wanting to take some photo's thus helping you.

That was my method up until today, when I came out to see a police officer checking out my car, and I had a nice conversation with him and ended up with a trespassing fine.

I'd opt for parking at the store. Just tell the clerk you ran out of gas or something and you have to walk to a gas station (if they even ask, chances are, they won't). I think that if you park on site, especially if it's after dark, you could be drawing some unnecessary attention to yourself. You never know about those neighbors either.

| | | Paint the car in digital camo, and make sure it uses a red flashlight. No one will ever see it. Sarcasm aside... If you leave a car at the side of the road, Johnny Law will think it's either abandoned, in which case they'll tag it with an orange flag and come back in a week or so if it ain't gone, or they'll think someone's trying to infil a nearby abandoned location, and come after you. It's 50/50 either way, really. If those odds aren't to your liking, I'd say the patent-pending Chainsaw Dropoff/Pickup plan works best. Barring that, the store is the next best thing.

| | | By "I can't ride a bike", do you mean you don't know how or is there something else keeping you? I've found my bike to be very handy when trying to overpass an area that when walking slowly through would arouse too much suspicion amongst the locals but provides no good area for parking. Then lock it to the fence and/or stash it in a secluded area.

Hmmm... I have a nifty "Auto Mini" folding bike from the 60's... this could be very useful in UE situations. Park a mile away... take the bike out of the trunk, ride it to the site, fold it up and hide it.

| | | I second the hood up distressed motorist tactic. Just don't carry a gas can (keep it in the car) when you're walking, lest someone see you enter the building with it =/. While walking back, you have the added convincing story element of "leaving the gas can in the car oops". It's worked for me, but just make sure you do not stop near any residences as they may come out to lend a hand if it's a friendly and neighborly section of the sticks.
