"Other" board restricted to Full Members Only

Was this a planned change, or a mistake?

If planned, then might I suggest changing the "How to be a full member" thread to reflect that one no longer has access to the "Other" message board.

You can close them, however.

Now if someone is that upset by not being able to post about non-ue things, then they really don't care about what the site is about, UE.

A whopping 90% of the 500+ posts made by Valiant Dancer in the last 2 years is in the Other forum. There's someone who really has no interest in UE if you ask me.

I have accpeted the fact that one must be a full member of UER in order to post and view the Other area. I now post more in other areas since the 'ban' and respond more than just read. Good move to the Admins here.

But I can find many other members who do not post at all, therefore they seem to have "no interest" in UE as well. I can also find many other members who have made *zero* contributions via the UE DB and the forum but have received full member status.

There are many members of UER who do not actively post. As such, they receive pretty much no benefits.

This may come as a surprise to you, but contributing to the LDB is not a requirement of Full Member status.

Anyone who has Full Member status but has not posted, or has not posted much, most likely came very highly recommended.

As Av said, there are many ways to be granted full membership. Knowing full members or mods personally will of course help, because there is a direct base of knowledge about the person and whether or not they should be given full status. For those that don't have any applicable aquaintances, contributing is the way to do it. But that can be in many forms here. Contributing to the UE DB is not required of anyone.

But that's dragging the topic off a bit, so I'll go back to the original point.

If someone posts 90% of their posts in the other (which is a nice name for junk board) and is so upset that they can't continue to post in that board, to the point that they will leave the site, I doubt their interest in UE. They can post about that random crap on any number of forums that are just for that, random crap. This is the URBAN EXPLORATION RESOURCE, and if that's not the point of them coming here, they probably don't need to be coming here.

I think changing the "Other" Board for Full members access only was a very good move. I believe it will help keep the forum in general much more on topic, and a lot safer, and secure in the long run. It will also lend credibility to the entire site was well I think.

a bit off topic but perhaps not, and I have mentioned this in a post in a different forum but i think non full members should be allowed to post locations in the DB... these should perhaps be moderated before they are accessible but i think its a good way to show your authentic interest in exploring your city or town... my 2 cents.

It seems you've just been looking with your eyes closed.

Unfortunatly there are many problems with this.

Basic Members are supposed to become Full members as soon as possible, and until that time they have access to much of the forum.

I used to think the 'Other' section was essential, but...

If you think about it, being unable to post on the 'Other' board or being able to read the Database is not big thing. The 'Other' section is for drivel and will keep you interest on UE and not on BS. And one should be trusted before they have access to the UE Database. You do not know why people are here and until the 'prove' themselves, their access need to be limited. There are many 'horror' stories here (if you look for them in the archives) of what happens when the wrong person reads something.

So, Avatar-X's (and others) concern if truly justified.

I came to be a full member through my UE experiences, photos, and giving guided tours of a monstrous abandonment that happens to be across the street from where I live. I've been doing this abandonment for 22 years though, so I thought I might be able to contribute to the various forums here.
Anybody can do an "other", but you need experiences to post everywhere else.
I rarely, if ever, go to "other" just because I'm here for the UE.

I think most of you are aware of this, but I decided to bring it up for discussion.

The new downfall of the restricted "Other" board is that new members will now post unrelated crud in the "Main" section. I'm not suggesting we undo the change, but maybe there could be warnings or something for this? Or if it hapens more than once a temp-ban? Just throwing around ideas here.

Edit: I forgot there was a main thread about this. Sorry.

Edit #2: I guess the main thread turned into a flame war and was locked. I know they discussed this problem there but it seemed to be left kind of unresolved.
