| | | | Old naval base in Rhode Island < on 9/25/2005 6:09 PM >
| | | Hey, I've been thinking about a place I've been to twice as a kid while visiting some relatives in Rhode Island, but im not quite sure where exactly it was. What I do remember is before we got there we went through a town/small city that had a walk along some cliffs that was a popular tourist spot because there were giant mansons along the cliff, the biggest one belonging to on of the vanderbilts, i think. After going on the cliff side walk, which must have been atleast a 4km round trip walk, we headed to a bit of a park which was home to a world war i or ii naval base right next to the ocean, (obviously). It was the first place I've been ue'ing, and went there the first time when i was about 5 or 6, then the second time probaly when i was 11 or 12, and was by far the coolest place I've ever explored. The naval base was pretty big, had one or two big concret towers, 3 or 4 pits/areas where giant cannons used to be, a big inside with a few big rooms with lots and lots of long dark tunnels, which i wish i explored. I'll ask my dad and find out if he knows what it was called, i doubt he will tho..but at the very least he should know where it was located. Does anyone here have any information/know of the location i'm talking about, or better yet, have any pictures of the location? I have a feeling it'd be listed in the UE DB but unfortunately im not a full member and cannot check.
Thanks for any help on identifying this location, -i2yan

| | | Fort Adams? Fort Wetherhil? Fort Getty? Quonset Point? I have no clue I'm just listing off all the old military installations right around that area.

| | | Are you sure that's for Wetherill? I practically lived there last summer, and no matter how old that bottom picture is, I can't figure out where it was taken at the Jamestown fort. Both pictures look like they were taken Watch Hill. And from your description, you'd have to be looking for a bunker in Newport. I'm pretty sure their used to be one, but I haven't been their in at least five or six years.

| | | Those definitely weren't taken at Fort Mansfield. Bears a vague resemblance to it, but it definitely isn't it.

| | | Fort Mansfield = Fort Wetherill? I wish i could have found better pictures but those were the only ones that looked like what i remember. The last picture was either from the fort i went to, or that same design for the cannons were used (which is pretty reasonable). While i was reading up about the fort it mentioned that there were 3 or 4 areas for cannons like that, and thats what i remember, and i remember the place being overrun by foilage, which is shown in the pictures. -i2yan

| | | Fort Greble (Dutch Island) is a UEr's dream. I've made a few trips out there and it is well worth it. However, the island is closed and the marine unit of Environmental Police does look for people out on it. DEM owns the land and it is a management area. Winter is really the time to go because the brush is so dense. You get everything from a lighthouse to bunkers. I wrote about it in the UE DB Fort Wetherill is also a great place. It's perched on top of cliffs. The pits you see in all these places were gun pits for shore artillery. They had disappearing mounts. The recoil of the weapon would drop the whole gun into the pit and thus make it invisible to a hostile ship at sea. Fort Adams is being restored. Also owned by DEM. Still worth a visit. There is a small bunker at Point Judith, and more bunkers at Beavertail in Jamestown. Both are sealed off. The state is worried about people being in there. Lots of holes in the floors and bad ceilings. Fort Getty on Jamestown was buried, but there are still some ways in if you work hard. In Narragansett, on what is now a National Guard training base (Ahh...I miss freezing my ass off there for PT) is a small bunker. Sealed off though. The cottages were actually fire control stations designed to look like civilian homes to confuse enemies. They are still there. There is also Fort Greene. It's in Fishermen's Memorial Park, owned by, you guessed it, DEM. It's now a RV campground run by the state, but it's still very easy to access and actually pretty interesting. The fact that most of these forts are on state land in parks where people are supposed to be makes getting in a breeze. From your descriptions, I can really only think of Ft. Adams. I'll check it out this weekend though, my girlfriend lives in Newport and I'll convince her it's time for a walk.

Ahh the sour memories of camp varnum. I'm wondering if the tunnel is still solid or if it has collapsed.

Is this Camp Cronin? And if not, what the hell is under Camp Cronin? (Near the fishing point, by the lighthouse.)
