| | | Posted by Slombat I believe that the filter/red leds changes the wavelength of the light, red being a shorter wave it doesnt travel quite as far, and its better for your eyes at night.
|
Red actually has the longest wavelength of all colors of visual light. It doesn't affect your night vision because it doesn't break down the rhodopsin (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rhodopsin) in the rod cells of your retina. Really interesting link, by the way. I've got an old webcam sitting around, I'll have to give it a shot sometime. [Edit] In perusing older posts, I noticed Servo said the same thing a while backhttp://www.uer.ca/forum_showthread_archive.asp?fid=1&threadid=18610&currpage=1&pp#post7. | | | I was thinking of Infrared, it has the shortest. If you have the time the webcam thing is worth it.

Actually, the wavelength of infrared "light" is still longer than the rest of the spectrum visible to us humans - 44176.jpg (66 kb, 728x562) ~Grit.

| | | I picked up an Energizer lamp from Walmart the other day for 15 bucks. It has 4 white leds and 2 red. 2 of the white leds are "flood" and the other 2 are spotlight. You can change between 4 modes(the 2 flood, the 2 spotlight, all 4, and red). The visibility distance leaves something to be desired, but it really lights up the area your in.

| | | The Recoil LED lights give off almost a spotlight-like beam (a very bright spot, but no spill beam). IMHO, this would be good for spotting things at a distance, but bad for trying to navigate around in the dark.
Posted by grit1 Has anybody ever tried out one of these Pelicans? http://www.pelican.../2680_headsup.html It's got what they call a "recoil LED" that is mounted like a search light - facing back at the reflector. They boast 100% light efficiency on this design. Does anybody own this headlamp? Seems like a nice unit! ~Grit.
