"Other" forum will be closed to basic members.

Effective immediately (actually, as soon as it's finished being coded), access to the "Other" forum will be allowed only to full members.

This is being done in response to a growing concern that there is a disproportionate amount of non-UE content on UER, and a disproportionate amount of that content is being posted by people who rarely post anywhere but in "Other".

It is our hope that this change will be viewed as an opportunity for basic members who have not yet participated in much UE discussion to improve their posting habits, apply for full membership, and regain access to the (undeniably fun) Other forum.

Respectful commentary is invited.

Makes sense. Myself being a new member, I dont feel right until I get to know some people in the forums. Another site I belong to I am a TopLevel or Total Member and I love being able to leave the ranks of the masses to talk in a community that is much smaller and therefore more fun and informative.

I look foreward to becoming a full member eventually so I can meet some others in the area to go exploring with. My knowledge of industrial/commercial process and electrical engineering comes in handy more often than not.

I'll see you guys on the "other side" some day.

Bravo.

I guess I could see the reasoning behind this, but wouldn't it be as effective to make the posts by default go to "Full Members" only and make it an option to have "Non-Full Members" view it? There are some "Other" topics that non-members discuss that is not UE related.

I don't know what you mean by "non-UE" content, since the defination of the "Other" forum is --

"You can talk about anything here"

If the "Other" forum is now becoming a "UE Other" forum, the description should read --

"You can talk about anything UE related here"

If you don't like the political discussions, fine, put a sticky note and state that no political discussions are allowed and any posts made with a punch towards one party or the other will be deleted. But I find a lot of non-UE related "Other" posts informative and interesting.

It is our hope that this change will be viewed as an opportunity for basic members who have not yet participated in much UE discussion to improve their posting habits, apply for full membership, and regain access to the (undeniably fun) Other forum.

I think there are two parts to this discussion that you lumped into one. One is the separation of "non-members" from "members" in the "Other" forum. The second one relates to the "growing concern" of "non-UE" content on UER which doesn't relate to the first topic. I can see how the two can be possibly linked, but it is a far shot and there are no statistics that show that a lot of basic members post nothing but "non-UE" material in the "Other" forum.

My two cents...

We're not saying "non-members", we're saying Basic Members - those who have not yet gotten through the approval process for Full Membership. And yes, there are Basic Members who discuss non-UE related topics in the Other forum, but there are many Basic Members who post exclusively in the Other forum, and never post anything in the UE forums. Remember, this is The Urban Exploration Resource, not the Talk About Anything Resource. That's www.taar.ca, I think.

We are aware of that, but the concern is that there has been less and less UE talk on UER. This move is being done in an attempt to swing the focus of UER back on Urban Exploration. Plus, Tux isn't talking about non-UE talk in the Other Forum, that's not the problem. He's talking about the sheer abundance of non-UE talk on UER, and that many members post only in the Other forum to the exclusion of all else.

The topic of the Other forum is not changing. Only access to it is.

You're not getting the point. It's not about shutting down the Other forum, it's about trying to control the number of Basic Members who do nothing but post to that forum exclusively. It really doesn't have anything to do with the topics on that forum at all.

I'm sure it can be put together, as all posts users make are archived. It would be an incredibly time consuming and tedious job to put these stats together, though, I imagine. I think you're just going to have to take the administrations' word for it, which I'm sure you can do.

Thanks for your comments, Seicer. They were well thought out and well presented.

No, it wouldn't be. The point is to get the people that simply post tons within *Other* to get more involved in the actual UE sections of the forum, which is what UER is here for.

As I said above, UER ( Urban Exploration Resource ) is meant to be a place to post and discuss UE related topics. The *Other* section has become more of a focal point for people, so much so that some don't even seem to have any posts anywhere else... You can still talk about anything there, but now people that are here strictly for that and haven't contributed to the site in the way it was designed for, will have to start contributing or look for one of the million other random crap forums to post such things in.

It is to detract from the *Other* board and get people back to what the site is about. Plain and simple. Start at the bottom and work your way up. if people are that upset that they can't post thread after thread of random junk, well, we're sorry but that's just how it is. If it's not urban exploration peope are really here for, then many other places would suit their needs better.

It requires wisdom to understand wisdom: the music is nothing if the audience is deaf.

Damnit, I have never posted in the 'other' section. And now that I can't see it, I'm curious about it!

Edit: Nevermind, it seems I'm a full member. With the whole ranking system I got confused. Well, that was embarassing.

Thanks for the clarification. When I meant "non-member" I was referring to "basic." I keep mixing them up.

I suppose I can agree on that, I just misread the OP's comments. If a person makes solely non-UE comments that could waste a lot of server resources when the person doesn't contribute. I guess this also relates to the "arm-chair" explorer deal.

For what little it's worth, I like the idea - as mentioned we're here to be a group of people who UE, and can talk about other stuff. But having X new people join because a friend at school told them about the site, even though they never personally UE, and just want "another messageboard" to post eMail forwards to... ;)

Personally, I think it sucks. I have been here quite some time and because my schedule precludes me from going to 'meets' and because of my occupation, I am being ostracized. I have never caused any problems here and have contributed some, but no one has bothered to even talk to me (except for Burzum, bless his heart).

I have watched so much of this forum 'disappear' from us normal, non-'elite' members and it really bothers me. As more and more is taken from us 'non-trusted' (and not from any lack of effort) "members" there will be less and less contributed to the forums.

Just because a few people have had their hackles raised does not mean take it out or away on the rest of us. 'Other' means other, where you can post anything you want OTHER than UE related material, as I had been told many times in the past.

Soon, all a new member will be able to do is talk in chat and see a bunch of colored button that s/he has no idea what the hell they really mean! Bad, UER, bad.

This site is becoming more and more 'clannish' and the elite will soon be only for those belonging to this uber-society and no one will be able to find this site or access the tonnes of information here that could potentially save their lives, help them avoid dangerous places, and meet people like Jeff (Ninjalicious)...

Shame on Avatar-X, shame on the Moderators, shame on their supporters...

If your schedule precludes you from going to 'meets', then it must preclude you from exploring in general.

If you were exploring in general, you could be sharing pictures, stories, anecdotes, etc. Do that, and you'd most likely be a "full" member.

And "no one has bothered to even talk to [you]?"

How emo.

What's stopped *you* from talking to people first? Hanging out in chat?

Oh, right, your schedule.

Well, if you're so busy, then perhaps this isn't the place for you.

I do go out once in a while, I have shared (anedotes and stories), and have tried to go out with others, but everyone's schedule does not match. Take the emo crap and shove it up your a**, no one is asking for you to patronize me or even for your opinion. I am stating the way that things seem to be going on this website (which I consider one of the better). I have been in chat, just maybe when you were not there. Some people have lives and jobs and cannot hang out at their computer all day.

You, sir, are exactly the 'elitest' type of prick that I am referrring to. Just because you have full membership means you can shit on others? Well, f*ck you, maybe you need to be at the same spot I am in!

If I wasn't a personal aquaintance of the owner of the site, or located in a "UE hotbed area", so to speak, I certainly wouldn't have level 3.

And you know what? I could care less.

In fact! I don't even use the LDB. I think it's useless, from my perspective.

So, with that in mind, I'm asking Avatar-X to remove my Level 3 status.

I don't need it, nor do I want it. I find things just fine on my own.

One does not need to attend "meets" to gain Full Member status. Requests for Full Membership are reviewed according to your contributions, as well as remarks entered by other basic and full UER members.

It's all about being a part of the UE community. If you're not here for that, then go somewhere else to chat about generic stuff.

I see the point about having new "basic" members contribute and get involved, and I have no problem with that. However, I also understand DavidE's concern. I would hate to see parts of the site closed off and left only to people that have been around forever. That doesn't bring in active new people. All in all, thats a tough call, and I don't envy you making the choice. I'll still be here, contributing as I can, and maybe one day I can be a Full Member too!

Cutting people off from parts of this site means that they are less and less part of the UE community. By saying "This section is only available to Full Members. Sorry." you are basically saying we are not members of this community. And by saying that, you are no longer giving us the chance of being a part of said community. But then again, a 'community' is:

com·mu·ni·ty ( P ) Pronunciation Key (k-myn-t)
n. pl. com·mu·ni·ties

1. a. A group of people living in the same locality and under the same government.
b. The district or locality in which such a group lives.

2. a. A group of people having common interests: the scientific community; the international business community.
b. A group viewed as forming a distinct segment of society: the gay community; the community of color.

Similarity or identity: a community of interests.
Sharing, participation, and fellowship.

So, by definition, this is not a community, it is an elitist society. Sorry, I am not trying to incite anything here, just trying to point out that more and more is being taken from people who do have a genuine interest in UE.

And as to someone else's inferred remarks about not meeting people, not everyone has the same schedule. I work most nights and other people here during the day. Also, the people where I UE, there are about 6 out of 40 who are 'full' members. Try meeting someone from my area anywhere. I am not the first in the Bay Area to point this out.

I happen to think this sight has a great deal of potential, despite the latent zenophobic attitude of the UE elite. What must one do to be accepted by the "cool" kids these days? Jeeze.

For someone who claims he has little time to get involved, you sure either type really fast or seem to have the time to whine.

I stand by my original request. I DON'T CARE. I don't need 'special' status. Take it away. Won't ruin my day. Why? Because having 'access' on a website isn't going to ruin my day. I'll just go explore something, fuck my wife, take a dump. All have higher priorities to me than the internet. Especially a non-stop flamefest in the Other forum.

It's all about perspective.

If it is all about perspective, why bother to participate in this discussion? Why even bother to look at this site, because according to you, you don't need it. And you do care or you would not respond to other's remarks. Obviously, you do or you would not be reading the posts here.

Also, cut and paste works wonders...

Exactly. Thank you for making our point. We don't want new people coming here simply for the conversation in the Other forum. We want new people coming here for the urban exploration discussions in the twenty other forums they will have access to, not counting the hojillions of potential private boards they can be members of.

Thank you again, Jonsered.
