Cemetaries, old or abandoned

Recently I've been looking through records trying to find old and/or abandoned graveyards in the Mid GA area. So far, I'm getting mostly church graveyards... In particular, I'm looking for more info on the lost graveyard out at Central State Hospital, in Milledgeville, (more info here http://www2.state.ga.us/departments/dhr/cemetery4.html ), and more info on the Rosehill Cemetary in Macon. If you've got an leads on cemetary locations, or info about either of the two up top, please let me know

As I'm addicted to pictures, here are a few from Rosehill

A nice overview of a main hill

A lot of vandalism out there....

As far as I've read, the Woolfolks were the first big mass murder in Macon. The son (and sole survivor) was hanged for the crime, and a few years later someone confessed to it while committing a similar crime in Alabama.

Here's them now.

I don't suppose you've got any sort of links to it... I know the middle GA counties (hancock, wlikinson, baldwin, Jones) have directories of the graveyard locations, and sometimes pictures... if we could find similar items for atlanta, that would be awesome.

Hopefully I'll be getting another set of pics up soon... in the meantime, their website is quite nice... http://www.rosehillcemetery.org/

As for other nearby graveyards, check out http://www.friendsofcems.org/ It's a fairly accurate listing of local cemeteries, with directions and sometimes pics

When I worked at a radio station people used to call in saying they couldn't find our website. "I type in WGKA.com, but nothing happens!"
In most cases, these people were trying to type in an AOL keyword, not realizing that their AOL experience wasn't the be-all end-all of the internet.

Ahh, 1998.

Finally got to the Central State Cemetary, also known as Cedar Lane Cemetery!

First, a little background about the place. Central State Hospital in Milledgeville, GA, is the oldest mental institution in the state. It has historically housed thousands of people, ranging from lunatics to disagreeable wives. Currently, the state has cut it's funding, and it houses a mere 900 or so patients. During it's prime, Central State had many patients pass away (from age, disease, and experimentation), and created a cemetery to bury them at in a nearby bit of woodland. After years of use, funding was cut, and the cemetary was lost. In 1997, former patients on a tour asked to see the cemetery.... and discovered how poorly maintained it was. Money was raised and a renovation was launched. It was completed in March of 2005.

The Historic marker by the entrance

Grave markers found scattered on the grounds.

A life sized Bronze Angel in the approximate center of the Cemetery.

There is no rhyme or reason to the placement of the graves.

Some of the more orderly patient graves

Almost all the graves are damaged in one way or another...

A few more random graves

Enjoy!

I have some family up around asheville, NC and i know theres some random cemetaries up in the mountains around there. Nothing special, but kinda neat to stumble across while hiking in that area.

You might try Apalachee, north of Madison in Morgan county, and Godfrey, south of Madison. The graveyard in Apalachee appears to be just north of the old townsite, and in Godfrey it is by the Antioch Church, north and a shade east of town.

I have changed my personal exploring ethics code. From now on it will be: "Take only aimed shots, leave only hobo corpses." Copper scrappers, meth heads and homeless beware. The Jonsered cometh among you, bringing fear and dread.

Supposedly this cemetery is active... though frankly it looks pretty bad.

Hawkin's Cemetery

The front gate... accessible from a mall parking lot. Note the lack of a sign. Interestingly, the fence only encompasses a small part of the cemetery. The rest is scattered in the woods.

Somebody has been here recently

They could use some upkeep

Nice. I would like to get up the Central State one. The old Macon City Cemetery is an interesting one if you have never seen it. There is also an old one with mostly unmarked graves behind a church off of Hartley Bridge Road. It is back in the woods. There is also an old cemetery behind Robins Air Force Base. I know about that one because we have some family buried there. It is directly behind the old SAC area, which is now where JSTARS and the KC135s are kept, on the outside of the fence. If you are interested in seeing it, I can give you directions to get there. I dont have any pictures of the one behind Robins because I havent been back since I got my digital camera, but here are some other pictures.

Taken at the old Hartley Cemetery.

Another grave at the Old Hartley Cemetery. A way in....or, a way out?

Theres one in Okmulgee, Oklahoma its not much to look at but there are a few interesting stones. One looks like a tree stump although it had been toppled over last time I saw it. The most recent grave there was from the 1930's.
