Just like a weapon, if you are caught with them, be prepared to accept the consequences. That said, sounds like there is some fun to be had.

From what I know of foreign law (which isn't much and I could be wrong), If you are found in russia with lockpicks you are shot on sight, there is no explaining, there is no court, just a bullet in the head in the street.. Basically from my understanding you are named a spy and they won't take you back to the police station because if you are actually a spy and you manage to get away after being in the station you would have learned alot form being in there..

And pretty much they are B&E tools in the US too.. unless you can prove that you had no ill-intent... which is VERY hard to prove intent

I have the Southford Electric lock picking gun and I can open the lock in front of my house in 3 seconds flat. They are noisy and if your going for stealth, then I suggest the picks. I have opened many doors with the electric one in under 5 secs, but it has taken me 5 minutes to learn each lock enough to open it that fast. the picks are easier to use and you can feel the lock better. I always use picks when UEing. the electric one I use it for other things, like when I'm lazy to open a lock and I have all day.

As for the legal issues concerning lockpicks, see the bottom of this PDF:

http://www.capricorn.org/~akira/home/lockpick/mitlg-a4.pdf

Of course, it's a states issue, and this document is somewhat dated. YMMV.

What brand of dead lock? Security pins perhaps? Try less tension, like barely enough to keep the plug in the direction you want it to turn. Also try "bouncing" your tension as you rake / probe. ~Grit.

dead bolts are not any harder to open. In fact, I fidn them easier since they don't have any spring mechanism on them to push back. I learned using deadbolts.

If youre too cheap to go buy your own picks and youre not smart enough to make a set you can do what I did: I got a small dental pick from like safeway which I use to rake the pins and a small screwdriver which I use as a torque wrench.

Mine looks like the middle pick

I'm curious, if people are worried about carrying around lockpicks...why not just carry around the needed bump key(s)? If a cop searches you, I'm sure that he/she won't think twice about your key ring with the bump keys on it.

Which leads me to a question (not meaning to derail the thread)...is it easy to buy the blank keys needed from a local locksmith?

(Those 4 picks are the only 4 you will ever need, plus the wrench)..

I agree about not buying a big set, but with one caveat...

Picks break after a while, especially when you're just learning. If you can find it, I'd suggest spending your money on single picks and get 3 small diamonds, 3 large diamonds, and maybe a few different rake picks and a couple different tension wrenches. Be sure you get picks with handles too. Lots of the "large sets" only have handles on a few picks and the rest are just stamped steel. Those will wear your hand out long before you learn much.

It depends on the locksmith. The very nature of many locksmiths is to be a hardass, hardened by many years of practicing a craft - others are as nice as can be and will help you along the way as a hobbyist picker / tinkerer with locks. I know of one in St. Paul MN that I can go to to buy BEST keyblanks when I need a keyway I don't "stock", and have even asked him to set aside cylinders for me to play with - I need to bug him again about that.

Depending on what keyway you need you may be able to pick it up at a hardware store / walmart / other place that copies keys. BEST, Sargent and Falcon won't be easy to come by at consumer stores, but Yale, Kwikset, Schlage [regular] and Weiser will be available almost anywhere.

Also check online. Some outfits will sell you 10 at a time, others will make you buy 50 at a time. For some keyways I can justify buying 50 at a time, as it is a pain to pay for shipping for small quantities and I go through a lot experimenting with shear lines / bumping etc.

C-L-K Supplies seems like a good distributor for online stuff but they're slow - I know this from experience. www.lockpicks.com now also sells some keyblanks. I get them from a locksmith supplier that I have an account with. They stock the entire Ilco line and make you buy 50 at a time.

Best of luck ~Grit
