Milwaukee-- building downtown

Did they finish tearing down the building just south of 794 downtown?

It was pretty gutted by the time we saw it, but it had a cool view of the city and highways.

Just curious if it's flattened yet or not. I haven't been up there lately.

You just described quite a few buildings there...

Though anything with a cool view of the city is probably yuppie condos by now.

I think I know the building jhota is talking about. Last I heard it was at least half demolished.

The view isn't one yuppies would appreciate, being right next to the highway and all.

it was the one with a lot of pillars in it, and the top floor they were multi=colored for some reason. yeah i figured it'd be down.

that would be a terrible place for a condo. haha. but i put nothing past them.

Was that the building with the two smokestacks (well, there were only two smokestacks left when I saw what was left of a building)

i know which one you were talking about. like you said, it's totally gone now. i was contemplating checking it out when it was still somewhat there, but it didn't seem all that interesting.

it wasn't. the only cool thing was the way the random concrete and rocks were balancing on the stairs when we got up high enough (yeah i know that's common practice. it's just funny to be going up stairs and then all of a sudden realize there's a pile of large rocks hanging right in front of you). it was cool to watch see the highway and be level with it too, but nothing too exciting.

There are 2 buildings getting leveled right now because of the Marquette Interchange reconstruction. The first one (not sure of the name of it) was further east next to another giant brick warehouse with the "Iron Mountain Records Management" logo on it. Yes, this building is already flattened to the ground. Even if it were still partially up, I would never have recommended anyone try to get in. Since Iron Mountain deals with record management, the building was likely to have an extremely high security alarm system and security guards. (I know because I deal with their trucks which are also alarmed if anyone even touches a lock on the truck).

The second building is currently being leveled and is a few blocks west of the Iron Mountain building. This building was actually standing between the freeway sections with the giant Powerball billboard. There is still a huge portion of the building that is still standing and looks extremely easy to get into. Also, they are only doing the demolition at night due to traffic congestion. However, there is so much going on in the area during the day that it's doubtful you could get in without being caught. The building was originally a GE factory back in the 60s and 70s. It was later home to Aldritch Chemical. The Wisconsin DOT bought the building with intention of demolition to expand the freeway and built Aldrich an addition onto their other factory out on Teutonia just north of Silver Spring.

I have noticed some good graffiti on the blank billboard space on top of the building so there still might be good chances on a Sunday to get into the building when they aren't paying union workers time and a half to work on demolition.

I'm not sure which places you are talking about (mainly because I haven't looked taht closely at downtown lately, since I'm in Chicago). But it's cool that there are opportunities.

There's one building, that's always been in between all the highways that they look like they're tearing down, but I can't really describe it without going there and seeing what the building is actually labeled as. Anyway, hopefully that one is still around when I return.

Here's a couple of pictures a friend took from the place I was talking about in the first post. It's totally down, it was the one across the street from the train station downtown.

we could only get to the 5th floor because after that there was massive rocks piled blocking the stairway.

one time i was driving towards downtown on 794 and got stuck in some traffic. i happened to glance over at the aluminum-clad factory on the left and there was a worker dude on top looking at me. that was wierd.

I am pretty sure I know what building you are talking about... It was quite a sight... Too bad there will be no opportunity to enter it... I do recall suspicious looking people milling about on occasion, probably workers, but suspicious.

The first building, with the colored columns, would be this one:

The second, surrounded by the highway, is this:
