You act as if some person from half a world away is swooping in and revealing all your secrets without your permission. This is not the case. A local explorer from your own community created the location and decided what he wanted to exhibit there. UER did not force him to disclose any information he did not want to disclose.

No. An explorer from Fargo/Moorhead who sometimes visits here and has been shown around by the community posted them. In particular the explorer who showed him one of the locations was extremely dismayed to see it on the LDB. I realize that UER didn't force him to post it, but it also doesn't let the community take it down, does it?

UER's LDB is analagous to an art gallery. It's a place to showcase your work where it may be consumed by the public, or if you deem it necessary, a pre-selected thumbs-up portion of the public. The only items which appear in the gallery are the ones you pick. It's irrational to blame the gallery when an artist does a show you do not like.
Try to be a little bit more realistic here.

To extend your comparison, in this case the pictures being shown in the art gallery were of the interiors of our houses with instructions on how to get to our houses - some even showing ways to get into the houses. We do not want our houses in your gallery.

The poster has handled himself in a polite and mature fashion even when dealing with my sometimes less than polite word choices and he has complied with the community's wishes as much as is possible. This is now a dead issue. You're not going to modify the LDB to prevent our locations from being posted in it and we're going to continue doing our best to prevent them from being posted. You're not going to understand why explorers from a number of different cities dislike the LDB and don't want their stuff in it and you won't ever really try to understand it.

Corrections.

I'm from the Twin Cities (i.e. StP)... FM is a recent thing called college. Also the community has shown me around one place way out of the Cities-and not THBC. I take full credit for my photography and explorations: bothe the positive and negative implications.

Umm
I'm I ignorant because I don't know what it means to be called a poster? I guess I don't care, though.

A poster would be a person who posts. Like on this forum. Right now. We're all posters. Don't worry. It isn't meant as an insult.

I didn't mean Pigg's. I meant the other location that you baleeted.

Here is where the disconnection is. These are not photos of "your" houses, or "your" places. These are abandoned or public spaces and you have no more claim on them than anyone else does.

That doesn't mean we're not fiercely protective of the places we love and perhaps my extension of your comparison was bad, but the point is still valid. You are willfully and deliberately choosing not to get it. You claim the LDB is a tool for the community, but our community has mostly rejected it and others have as well, but you intentionally ignore that as well since it doesn't fit your world view.

Many valid points have been made and you choose to cherry pick only those that you feel can further your agenda without any regard for the others. I will not continue this discussion with you. It's a dead end. You've already made your decision. We're just a bunch of selfish assholes who would rather get to know people before giving away the keys to the city rather than trusting the faux security that is the levels system.

More baseless insults. What a surprise.

you say "our community has mostly rejected it"... clearly, they have not, because one member of this community you speak of has posted information. You can't make broad decisions for everyone who just happens to live in your city. I know that if I lived in that area, I wouldn't associate myself with your "community" because this "holier than thou" shit is just so egotistical.

Whatever. Go back to your secrecy and shadow games. Here in Toronto, we hold monthly meets, anyone can attend, and information is freely shared. It's really beautiful to see how well a system like the LDB and the events system can bring people together. But when you're too stubborn to even give it a chance, when you condemn it from the start, it's you who loses.

Yep, we're so losing out by not sharing information with the ravers, partiers, taggers, vandals, thieves, pyromaniacs, idiots, dumbasses, thrill-seekers, goth punks in search of meaning in their life, LARPers, and others we really don't want to "bring together".

You can't have it both ways, Av; one minute you're saying we all need to play together nice as a team, and the next you're saying that one person in the community can and should be able to flaunt and disregard the wishes of the team he or she is supposed to be a part of. It's not an anarcho-syndicist commune, and nobody's appointed you - or anyone else - Executive Officer of the Week.

The actions of one member are not representative of a community as a whole Av. When one person who happened to be a member here, decided to go dig up gunpowder in Yeorgs, does that mean as a whole, our community are a bunch of trouble-makers and Jr. terrorists???

We hold many sorts of get togethers, just not so rigidly structured as "monthly meets," and for the most part, anybody credible is welcome. You have your wway, we have ours. I prefer ours. I'll be glad to look back in 10 years and think about what a fun time Mouser week VI or whatever was, I hope you can say the same about AvBoard Monthly Scheduled Event #227.

Who's being insulted here? All I see is a couple people who are ignoring eachother's points.

Av, the US is different than Toronto, I think you yourself mentioned that in discussions over security concerns for a US OPEX. Locally we have christian rock bands who think cherry bombs make good lockpicks, we have jumpy security who like to arrest people for photographing hospitals, and we have kids falling 70 feet because they found out about abandoned buildings and thought one flashlight and a case of beer made good exploring gear.
I believe in freedom of information, but it shouldn't be free to just anyone who can jump a couple simple hoops and get membership on some forum. If someone's too lazy to talk to other locals, or go down to the library, or actually go out and find something new, why should they be handed a list of GPS coordinates and addresses?

Minneapolis holds events as well, since I've been here they've had river fires, backyard meets, weekend exploring trips, etc where new people were always welcome. I've met a few new people who seemed cool, and a few who have been totally nuts (anyone remember the drunken switchblade guy?). I've met people who seem great in person and act like total idiots online, and I've met well spoken online personalities who are asshats in person. The only way to really get to know someone is by meeting them.

This thing flared up again? I thought it was dead.
Mynameisglass was great about altering his LDB locations and it all looked great to me. I dont want to pick up that stick over there and start beating a dead horse again, esp since its bloated and stinky and farts when you hit it. Maybe Ill just poke it a couple of times...
There are several locations in the LDB by locals of the Twin Cities including myself, Heartless, and ETMJ.
We hold events all the time we just dont post them as events here. Its kinda like posting for a local block party in the New York Times and your local paper. We tend to like the local feeling not the whole world one for events. Although the little car icon you get looks spiffy and everything, I prefer to have memorable events rather than as Macsbug said event #227. If it would help smooth things out we can start posting a few events here too. I dont think too many people would freak out too much (no not you Freak) but its not going to be for all events. If people want to visit the cities they should start by looking at sites in the cities as well as here for information and contacts.
The LDB does come in really handy for when I travel and want to meet people. Pretty much everywhere I have gone and messaged people on here they have been great folks. Just like we try to be great folks when people come to us. We just go about it in a different way.

I don't think anyone here was being egotistical Av. There is a reason that we guard our info the way we do. For instance the place I'm sure ETMJ was referring to has been explored for almost a year now, it was top secret for a few months and the info slowly filtered out. Even at that and it not ever being mentioned online that I remember seeing, it has slowly gone down hill. Granted most has been from workers I'm sure. But it is still very intact. I wish I could say the same about other more mainstream places. This shit gets hammered down here and the landowners and the cops are not always friendly. They can't be when there happens to be an above average moron count in the area. It is for this reason most of the major players choose to keep a low profile and slow the release of information. Anyone who is not a shit for brains is usually welcome, but common courtesy would dictate that they don't tell everyone and their uncle. People that want to find this stuff can on their own, or with some help from one of us. I also think it may be out of respect for the land owners, they don't want their property vandalized or burned to the ground.
