| | | Memorial / Get together for Ninjalicious < on 9/2/2005 1:41 PM >
| | | I am planning some kind of a memorial or get-together for Ninjalicious / Jeff. I would very much appreciate suggestions and ideas, since I've never done this sort of thing before. But here's what I have in mind: - We hold it in Toronto. Ideally, I'd like to hold it in Ninj's favourite place (Royal York), but I don't think I can swing that. - Everyone is welcome. Family, friends, internet acquantances, press, or even just interested third parties. - I imagine, just as they did here on the forum, that many people will want to say a few words to the crowd about how Ninj touched their lives. I know I do. So I think we should have a podium and a microphone set up. This event should be held in 2-3 weeks, to give people enough time to change their schedules. I've received many messages from people outside Toronto who would fly here or drive here to attend such an event. Please post additional suggestions and ideas.

| | | How about organizing this event in or at the outside of Ninjalicious favorite abandoned building.(Although I don't know how to get electricity in such a place,or even permission to held such an event there :s ) Maybe a stupid idea, but thats how I would want it! Even I can't be there(cause I live in Europe),my thoughts and that of many UE's from belgium goes to the family and friends of Jeff.

| | | I can keep one or two out-of-towners if they're looking for free accommodations. You can put anyone looking for a night's stay in contact with me and we can hammer out details.

| | | I'd try very hard to go, but I'd have to either hitchhike or get a drive with someone else who's going by this way(New Brunswick). Should set up a way to organize carpools, for people who are willing to take fellow Explorers on their way. Maybe the passengers can split the cost for gas or something?

| | | Why not try to approach the Royal York and simply ask them? I have a friend who works for Fairmont, might be able to hook me up with the right person to talk to. It would be good press for them, as long as we spin it the right way, I can't see why they would say no. Only issue is, if we want a room to hold it in, they might want some cash for it, which could be steep... Av, if you are up for it, I could see what I could find out and we could go talk and see what they say - let me know... [edit] Just emailed him, have to get on the phone and see what he can do for me - will post details when I have them... [/edit] [edit2] Also working a contact at the Toronto Star, see if I can get a reporter on board, some ammo to take to the RY if we get to talking stage. If we can guarantee them some good PR out of it, it will go a long way to helping us get in... [/edit2] [last edit 9/3/2005 1:21 AM by lopix - edited 2 times]

| | | Av, would holding it in the Royal York really be that unreasonable? I think it's a great idea. The question is obviously in the cost. But I mean consider how much people were willing to spend to go to OPEX, if you were to charge $10...$20... something like that for people to attend this, it may cover not only the conference room, but also a donation to a charity that Jeff would have wanted donations to go to. Someone should at least look into the cost first before we consider it to be out of the question.

I am working on it, calling my buddy tonight to see what he has found out and if he has any names of people for me to talk to. Also waiting to hear back if the Star is interested, try to "pay" them in good PR and reduce the cost for those who want to attend. Should have more info by tomorrow...

| | | While all this memorial planning is going on (so nice) I have been talking to Av about trying to somehow make the Access All Areas book launch take place on the same weekend. I'm not quite sure if this is going to be feasible, however, not the least of which problem being it seems like the venue I thought we were launching at is suddenly wildly unavailable for most of the next 2 months. I'm still working on this and I'd love to see a scenario where the book launch could be on a Friday or Sunday and the memorial could be a day/afternoon thing one day on that weekend. The memorial would be the focus for those of you coming from out of town, but if people also wanted to go to the launch (we're gonna try to make it fun) it would be neat to have people around to celebrate Jeff's book. So, just to be clear -- the weekend of Thanksgiving would totally suck for everybody, right? PM me or email if you have any helpful suggestions, (e.g., "What? Urban explorers hate Thanksgiving! I'd love to travel to Toronto then!"). Yeah, didn't think so. Working on it... Liz

Just for those that celebrate the holiday. For the record, last year I ditched the states in favor of an anti-thanksgiving in Canada. And it was the best thanksgiving ever.
WTF indeed. |

| | | Will this be PMed to everyone as a notice like the other local events? I'm notorious for not checking UER for days at a time, though lately, I'm getting better at it. I'd definately like to come to this, I didn't know Ninj very well but I liked and respected him, and I'd like to at least be there during his memorial. Donations sound like a good idea, too, but with my job I have no idea if I'll be able to come. I have to give something like four weeks notice to book any time off so that's kinda out of the question, so I guess it's really a roll of the dice for me. Merde.

heh, I was thinking about that, and realized that's what you meant. Still, good to clarify for those coming from the states that didn't know about the date difference.

| | | Myself, for one, leave town for Thanksgiving, opting for the wide-open goodness of the Muskokas. It's a tradition with my family, which I missed last year. I wouldn't be able to make a Thanksgiving weekend memorial. Don't let that stop you though. You can't please all the people all the time! C.
