| | | Wow. that's one of the cleanest, driest drains I've seen (up until the part about the mud)

| | | Yeah. It was very clean. No Trash or anything like that. I think it is new and has not been broken in yet. There woulda been no water if it hadn't rained the night before.

| | | Pretty cool. Congrats on your first drain. Definitely get some good boots, they make draining far ... cleaner : ) I'm curious, what did it outfall into and what was the outfall like structurally?

I'm sorry, but you're going to have to define "outfall." edit: BTW, Kowalski: I just saw your homepage icon and checked it out. That pic is amazing! Is that modified? [last edit 8/30/2003 5:29 PM by Noah Vale - edited 1 times]

| | | By outfall I'd assume he meant the location where the water exits at the end of the drain.

Where you entered the drain. I assumed it was an outfall because it seemed well-lit and the water would obviously flow out of that pipe when it was actually running. It looked like a bit of a strange shape to me in that first photo, and that's why I was asking. But maybe you came in through something else?

Glad you liked it : ) Apart from having its levels tweaked and its corners cut off, that photo is unmodified. That's from a quite impressive drain in Hamilton, Ontario that I've called the Stairway to Paradise. If you go back a few pages in the Ontario forum, you should be able to find a thread about it, though that photo won't be there, as it was taken on a subsequent expedition. Hopefully my actual, much-delayed website should be up within a couple of weeks. There'll be full writeups about 24 Ontario drains, along with several other interesting locations and the usual grab-bag of related information.

Okay, thanks for the definition...Yeah it was a little wierd. This drain was right by a hospital and all the other drains around the hospital have the same appearance to their outfall. In the pic you can see a wall that starts about 2 feet off the ground reccessed in about 5 feet. I had to crawl under that to get to the drain proper. The V shape in the fore trickled water toward me (I am standing ankle deep in mud as I took the pic) I think this is a new drain 'cause I see constrction workers doing stuff during the day, plus the wheelbarrow, shovels and pushbrooms I found in the tunnel. The water just trickled down the hill, not really sure where it ends up, though I think there is a park down there with a pond. I'll be going back soon to see where it ends up.

| | | Ah okay. Speedboy's seen one or two structures like this one in Hamilton. The raised wall seems to act as both a splash guard, to force down any sort of torrent of water emerging from the drain, and to hide the actual hole from public view. The latter purpose can be chalked up to a thinking that says "the public thinks pipes are ugly," "if kids can't see the hole they'll be less likely to investigate," and "a big metal grating is uglier than this smooth concrete wall." The small wall with the v-shaped spout gives the outfall a minor retention capacity during heavy waterflow, and regulates the amount of water escaping downstream in order to prevent erosion and flooding.

| | | I went back today and finished the rest of the drain...Well, not ALL of it but I got to the end. Did a "digestive" as it's called. I'll post a link to the rest of the pics when I get around to putting them on the site.
