| | | | | Athens, OH : "The Ridges" < on 8/30/2005 9:23 AM >
| | | Has anyone else here actually visited Athens, OH and went to the Ridges? I've been there several times, have lots of pics. It's an old abandoned mental institution that was bought by OSU for office use, etc. Most of the outer buildings and majority of the main building are still left the same as they were when the place was abandoned.
I'm not really all that sure about how many pics you can post, but if anyone would like, I could post a few more...

There is a UE DB location for the Ridges. I was looking for the place when I was in Athens but I had just missed it. I made my way north to Nelsonville where I found a load of abandonments... Theres some Athens ppeople in here as well. Perhaps move this to the Great Lakes region?

| | | I was there like two years ago. http://www.kirkbri...ldings/athens.html From what you said, WVaGraveHunter, it sounds like the wards of the main building are all still mostly abandoned. Is that the case? Is there any work being done on them? Or are they still languishing? Just curious. I probably won't go back there any time soon myself -- it's too far from home.

| | | We stoped there about two years ago Admin was made into a museum but the wards looked vacant I have heard that there is a TB ward out back but I did not see it The place is well maintained and an entry would be very risky At least the center part of the building is alarmed and who knows about the rest

| | | There weren't any alarms in the wings when I went in. I've gotten a few emails from college students at OSU who've wandered around inside the wings unauthorized too (they had pictures as proof). They never had trouble with alarms either. Maybe it's changed since I've been there, but I really doubt it.

| | | Whoa, didn't expect to get so many posts back so soon. Both the male and female wards are pretty much still abandoned. The administrative section of the building is currently in use, the upper floors are offices, and the first and second floor are currently home to the "Kennedy Art Museum". Some of the lower floors in the men's ward are used as a student art center for OSU, but you can still get to it with a little work. Most definitely worth the visit if you aren't afraid of heights, or at least have someone with you who isn't, and who can go in, and open a ground-level door for everyone else. Best time to go is on the weekends, I do believe. Majority of the surrounding buildings have been renovated and are used for offices, classrooms, etc. The building that is farthest away from the main structure, the TB Ward, is still abandoned, and is very easily accessible. Here's some of the pics that were taken from the last visit, and I'm going to post all of them on a photobucket account so everyone can view them. I'll post the link as soon as I get that done.
Many more pictures...I'll get that link up ASAP. If anyone wants any more info on the place, let me know.

| | | Yeah, the pictures came out a little blurry...the camera that we used wasn't really that great. Mine was getting some work done at the time. I'm glad you guys liked the pics. We got as far as we possibly could in there. Was a great place.

| | | There is a very easy (and secure) way into the basement, which leads to what we call the catacombs (the tunnels that link the buildings together. Just PM me if you are interested, or if you are ever in the area, let me know and I would be more than happy to show you. There was a UE DB site for it, but I removed as it was becoming a security risk. There were over 200 photos of everything from the basement and tunnels to the loft/attic area. Very cool area, but be careful as it is heavily patrolled. Our most successful time exploring it was around 6:00 in the evening because the workers have gone home, but the police have not arrived yet.
