Laziness (or, how to avoid being mistaken for a troll)

I've noticed that this is one of the main cause of arguments on UER (and other forums). Someone comes on, posts a brief complaint/flame/comeback, and doesn't bother to back it up or explain what they're talking about. Rather than making sure they get their point across, they fire off some random phrase and dissapear. Oddly enough, the same people often find more than enough time to post long, detailed, and contradictory rants on the lineage and sexual habits of anyone who misunderstands their posts.

In a lot of cases, these lazy posts can be seen as trolling, or as an attempt to start a flame war, especially if they're ambiguous enough to be misunderstood. Unfortunately most people don't have a magical telepathic way to obtain another user's meaning and intent from such a post, so the interpretation is left up to their imagination.

For example, let's say "BigBob34" posts "I hate teh level system, UER is teh ghey!". Maybe to Bob, this means "I dislike the current method of user evaluation, please ask me about my constructive suggestions for positive change", but the mods take it to mean "I'm a whiny asshat who's too dumb to spell". With a few more minutes of effort, Bob could have sounded less like a short bus riding troll, and could have worked towards changing something he disliked. Instead, all future contributions from Bob can be dismissed since he's (maybe unknowingly) portrayed himself as an idiot.

The solution is to think through your reasons when you're making an argument or complaint, and try to explain them in a way that other people will understand. State your problem, explain why you feel it's a problem, and if possible, offer some suggestions for changing it. Rather than saying "Freak is a conceited cocksucker", something like "I dislike Freak's behavior in <thread> because <reasons>, etc" makes more of a valid argument. If you find yourself being called a troll or an idiot frequently, or you think people are deliberately misinterpreting your posts, you might find that taking more time with your posts can help change that.

The charachter "bob" is fictional and does not represent anyone actually named bob on this forum.

Very good points made here.

It does seem that often, someone will just start a flame war for lack of something better do.

Myself, I do have better things to do, and have managed to avoid being dragged into them so far.

That problem has been around for a long time. Dates back when the UNIX Gurus ran most of the newsgroups and would say stuff like RTFM and what not.

Is there anything that cheese can't do?

That's good advice. I've given up a few times when writing a rebuttal and realizing I just wasn't making my point clearly. I'd rather fume quietly and then get over something than end up just babbling.

I like cheese. Cheese is good. Cheese is tasty. Therefore, I like your post and agree with it. However, had cheese not been involved in your post, I still would agree with you.

I've often typed up a new thread or a reply, read what I've written, then rewritten it due to various ambiguities in the first draft. Clear communication is vital...

its not a very good contraceptive. but thats only a minor fallback, you deserve to get pregnant if your covering your wang in cheesy cheesy goodness.

But back on topic, good points, ive seen this happen at EVERY single forum and you will get zero respect for typin' like a total bell end. just take the extra time and get a freaking dictionary and use spell check, failing that you could always try cheese... mmm cheese

I tell people all the time to RTFM and point them to the manual section of the store! One thing that I worry about, at least here because the average IQ level is high enough for psychotic behavior, is that some of the threads that I start are trolling. Just a minor concern.

For the record, and this has never been answered satisfactorily in my 10+ years on the blasted internet, but what constitutes trolling? (like this question?)
