I just finished watching a special on the History Channel called Enchanted Summers....it was a documentary on the Muskoka region and it's place as a mecca for ultra luxurious hotels and resorts. The boom started in the late 1800's...such examples include The BigWin Inn...Windermere...The Royal Muskoka...among others. Many of them are gone now...as many are still around in some form or another.

I was just wondering if anyone lives up there....has explored up there? According to the documentary there are still ruins that could be explored.

I have searched to no avail. From what I know many of them burnt to the ground. I might have missed something though.

I know there's an old motel somewhere on hwy 11 north of Orillia and south of Bracebridge. I know it's a large area but I haven't been up that way since May.

They said "if you search just back from the shoreline you'll find reminents of these grand old places". They had a few shots of what is left...bits and pieces of buildings etc. This documentary was shot quite a while ago 'cause The Bigwin Inn was empty as the documentary ended and today its alive and kickin'...been that way for several years according to my cousin. Interesting thing is I was up to the Lake of Bays to fish with him a couple weeks ago...we saw the Bigwin Inn with the big round building and I mentioned seeing this special previously. I couldn't recall it's name and my cousin suggested it was another resort somewhere else. Little did I realize this was the place I'd seen with the big round building.

Don't call it a comeback, I've been here for years.

One of these old resorts is about a ten minute walk from my cottage. There is nothing left of it, as it burned to the ground several decades ago. However, one of the outbuildings still stands. It is a single long building with three hotel rooms inside it, but this has been converted into a cottage.

Also, I don't know if it's still there, but in Port Severn all that remains of a resort that was once near the locks is a two story stone fireplace. Again - lost to fire. It's right in the middle of town, and people use the empty lot to sell fruits and vegetables to tourists.
