| | | | House(s) In the Rouge Valley < on 8/22/2005 10:26 PM >
| | | Hey i live about 5mins away from the rouge valley, near the zoo, and have been almost everywhere there. Over the years I've come across two houses in the woods. One is made in brick/stone, looks atleast a century old, and is half torn down/collapsed. The other is owned and patrolled by zoo security but looks amazing. It is by far one of most interesting things in the rouge, imagine walking through the woods for a few hours and then stumbling upon a big open area with an old manson in the middle of it. The land that the manson sits on has a horse stable, open wooden fenced field for horses, a front yard with a huge fountain in the middle of it, and what looks like a few stone enterances to and underground tunnel/basement. The manson itself is amazing, it looks creepy at night, has stain glass windows of faces and prayers/writings, and is very spacious inside. The manson has a road that leads to it but inorder to get to it by road you've gotta pass right by the zoo security, zoopo, headquarters, which i dont advise. There are a few other ways in which involve crossing the rouge river on a giant tree that fell over on one side of the river and connects to the other side. I havent been to the manson yet this summer but last summer the house was not inhabited but has been used to film a few movies and shows. Just recently i was driving by and saw movie lights coming from where the manson is so i stopped and asked security and apparently they were filming a horror movie in it called the silence. The manson is used by movie companies to store valuable equipment while its not being used or during the night. My dad knows someone who makes props for movies and he says that security doesnt like staying in the house at night alone because of noisy and creeking, so they say its haunted..which makes the manson all the more interesting. Unfortunately the security is pretty good there, even when theyre not filming anything. I think they have motion detectors down there because last summer when i was just nearing the house at around 2 in the morning we saw the zoopo truck drivng down towards it and they two security guards got out and searched the perimeter of the site with flash lights. I will try and get some pictures up of both houses asap and might be going to check out the manson in a few days, so if youre interested post here. I probaly wouldnt go untill atleast 10 or 11, its much funner at night, and will be with 4 or 5 people. Has anyone else been to any of these places? -i2yan

| | | I've come across a wooden cabin in the Rouge, on the east side of Twyn Rivers. It's quite a large piece of property, complete with a barbed-wire fence. It definitely isn't abandoned, but I am not so sure that it's just someones house... There's also many remaining items from before Hurricane Hazel in the Rouge Valley, including a smokestack which is still standing. If you look hard enough on the Pickering side of the rouge, you can even find the remains of a Volkswagen which met an unfortunate fate with a tree.

| | | Sounds pretty cool, it makes me wonder why someone would build a mansion so deep in the woods like that.

| | | Lots of driveways, stone pillars and fences that lead nowhere, obvious sign that houses once stood!!!could they have also met the fate of Hurricane Hazel? or were they torn down to make way for the zoo? If I'm not mistaken there were many farms and houses in this area bought by the city of Toronto so that the zoo could be built and future expansion could be possible.

| | | There used to be a mill down on Twyn Rivers back in the late 1800's. There used to be 5 houses and 2 mills built around the Rouge River. The cabin is what remains of that small mill village.

| | | Where abouts is the log cabin located? Unless youre talking about the half torn down house by the tywn rivers parkinglot I've never seen or heard of it. Im gonna ride thro the rouge on my bike later today and check out some trails i havent been down before, which is mostly on the pickering side, and take pictures of any interesting things I come across. -i2yan

| | | When heading down Twyn Rivers from Sheppard, it'll be on your right hand side... you'll most definitely need to go off road to reach it. We had to bushwhack our way in/out, but there is probably a trail somewhere. Virtually all of the older structures in the Rouge were destroyed during Hurricane Hazel. There's just a few partial structures still standing, which are quite cool to see. Here's a photo of the Volkswagen (not taken by me):

| | | Almost as odd as the place we found it it... which was pretty deep in the Rouge, with no actual road nearby. There are also -a lot- of trees in the area, on all sides.

| | | Is the car close enough to the hill off shepard to have lost control and rolled down it? My friend found an old motorcycle at the bottom of that hill a few years ago which looked almost as rusted as that car but he still took it, and must have had a fun time trying to roll it up 'snake hill'/the hill off shepard into tywn rivers. -i2yan

The problem with the world is dumb people. I'm not advocating capital punishment for dumb people. I'm just suggesting we remove all the warning labels and let the problem solve itself. |

| | | I might be able to get good pictures of the mansion....talked to my best friend and another buddy yesterday who work at the zoo...I can get access via them so we'll see what happens. Apparently the mansion isn't owned by the zoo but they keep a watchful eye on it...it's owned by Rouge River Valley Ltd...a municipally owned company.

Sounds good, i suggest you go sometime around 6 or 7, or when the sun starts going down, the manson looks best then. Being given permission is never as fun but pictures are pictures, so i hope you get some good ones. Gl and hf, -i2yan
