First UE from Bermuda

Hi all,

Having lurked around here for about a year, I thought I should finally contribute. I have to apologise in advance for the poor quality of the pics as I was using a prehistoric digital cam (Fujifilm MX 2700, 2.3MP).

Here in Bermuda there are very few abandonments due to the very high value of land - basically, if there's a plot of land sitting undeveloped, it soon will be, usually condos. I won't go into how they're ripping this once beautiful Island apart for the almighty dollar, but, heck, they are.

So this one used to be Dot and Andy's Restaurant. I have been able to find nothing about this place, so I'll see if I can collar some oldtimers to see if they remember.

The front is directly on the road - you step out and you're in the line of fire for the traffic. This leads me to believe that the place dates to before the 1950's, when cars were introduced, and wouldn't have been a concern for patrons leaving the restaurant.

First, the front:

The front from an angle:

It's a sign!

I'm hoping to do some UE of the Dockyard area. It was a UK, then NATO, naval base up until the 1950's, then lay empty for the most part until the 80's when gummint took it over and redeveloped a lot of it. However, there are still many parts which have fallen to rack and ruin, including the old prison which was once the barracks.

Cheers

Perhaps if you got inside....I'm not a big fan of exterior shots...
Good luck next time.

Life is hard, but it's harder when you're stupid.

Indeed - this particular location is locked up tight as you can see. The locations in the Dockyard area are wide open, but will require official permission to access. Bermuda is a very small community and exploring places one shouldn't is that much more difficult.

Hopefully I'll have better shots next time.

Cheers.

Hi Elbowgeek. Greatings to a fellow person livin in bermy. I thought I was the only person on the whole damn island with any interest in old buildings/structures and the like. Well as you know (or maybe not), there are some great places for UE here on this tiny island. There used to be 4 very active millitary installations here that all have a wealth of UE. Also, there are several large hotels that are abandoned and I will be posting pics for one of these very soon (Old ClubMed/Holiday Inn). For the history buffs, Bermuda has over 15 significant forts/garrisons dating back as early as 1675. Look forward to posting on here with a few locations that have very limited access to the public as I have a little unigue clearance in regards to some of the old millitary areas as I am an active member of the bermuda regiment and we train in a few of the areas that are otherwise inaccesable. Anywho, look forward to it and maybe we could get together for a few recce missions. Hope to hear from you.

That makes 3 of us then. We all need to hook up some time and go exploring. Some places i've wanted to go:

  • Casemates (a barracks that was later converted into a prison, now abandoned)
  • The US Naval Underwater Research Center (on top of Tudor hill, near the navel annex, watch out for crack addicts)
  • Admiralty House tunnels
  • Nasa Tracking Station
  • the old Marriott castle harbour (is it still standing?)

I'm not so sure about the Naval annex itself with all the pollution and asbestos. I'm sure there are more places, I can certainly think of a few active sites I'de love to do.

Was up all,

I will be heading up to the old US Navel Annex/ Morgans Point on Sunday if the weather is not to nice ( Bermudian security does'nt budge in the rain) o take some pics and stuff of some of the vast range of buildings and abandoned military hardware. Should be a good time. Gonna Put on my Government issue camos so if anybody does stumble upon me, I can hopefully BS my way out of it. Anybody else on here who is stuck on the rock interested??? Pics should be good so until then...................

I'll PM you about getting together. Also, I've got a line on how to get into the old NASA station, and someone has clued me into a way to penetrate Casemates, which is one of my Holy Grails.

Lookin' forward to chattin' to ya,

Hey, you in the Regiment? Cool stuff. Actually UE in Bermy probably isn't so nasty as it can be in other places.

I'll be in touch...

Sorry 'bout that! I really didn't think anyone else was into it here. Dang.

Are you coming home for Xmas perchance? PM or email me when you get back for a holiday. I'm waiting to hear back from Encore so hopefully we can get a group going here.

Yeah, I'd like to check out all that area. If I can contact my mate who works up there as a water treatment engineer (read: shitfarmer), I'll see if we can get a bit of a semi-official tour. There are ways into the old Casemates prison that I do know of.

Dockyard generally is an awesome UE location. It has been gussied up quite a bit since the 70's, but still has abandoned structures that are quite interesting.

I was able to explore the Commissioner's house before they started work on it and it was very cool, but no artifacts left behind. Was not worried about photos at the time though, sadly.

Cheers

That massive outfall you are thinking of is probably just a short tunnel that leads to a little mini harbor inside the maritime museum. They use it to house the dolphins at Dolphin Quest now.

Right in the middle: http://maps.google...&z=18&ll=32.327771,-64.832194&spn=0.002171,0.005032&t=k&om=1

PS: I will be back for Christmas, for several weeks. I’ll pm you when I know what day I’m flying in on. I live in Sandys parish, so the naval annex and casemates are prime targets. I also know someone who knows the guy who has the keys to casemates, but I don’t know if I want him coming, since he’s not very fit and might slow us down. It would also be something of a guided tour, which isn’t as cool.

Awesome, lookin' forward to it.

And yes, Casemates is a definite for me as well.

I'll also get the directions on how to get into the NASA station from my young friend - just hope its still accessible then. At least there will be fewer people around then.

Cheers

I know the best ways to get into the annex and the NASA base and they are both real real easy. Easiest access into the NASA complex is over the top of the large water catch just behind the place called GOMBEYS. As for the annex, go to rockaway ferry terminal at low tide, hop the 2 foot wall at the old officers club in the parking lot and walk the shoreline. Takes about 15 mins to get to first set of building ( old houses). Will print some maps of google earth tonight. Maybe have an explore this weekend???

Sounds like a plan. I've got Sunday morning free, so we can go then.

If you've got no plans Saturday night, there's the Bermuda Folk Club at the Old Colony Club, where there will be at least a couple of rock bands and some other cool entertainments happening. We start about 8pm - my band will be last on to close the night. It's a tribute night for a former band member of Last Rights, my band, so we fully intend on rockin' the joint.

Call me on 339-4587 and we'll hook up.

Here's some pics of the Burnt Point Fort taken in January 2005 while on vacation. It was completely open at that time and you could enter and explore both the Magazine and the Battery (mind you there wasn't much to see other than the barracks in the basement of the Battery - don't forget your flashlight)

Ah memories. Memories of sunning in the buff at the top with my then wife, then seeing a wee cub scout pop out of the entrance to the top there - followed by the rest of his troop lol.

That is an interesting location, and there's other ruins close by, including the old train depot if you do some walking round towards the Shell docks. Must get out there now that I have a camera.

Thanks for those, Hlywud.
