Yeah, responding to trolls never goes anywhere. I'm looking forward to seeing many of you at OPEX, the 2nd annual worldwide UE convention, OPEX being the first of its kind, made possible by the forum alliance created by UER.CA (OPEX was originially conceived of and planned on these very forums)

I weep for the "explorer" who can't see OPEX for the amazing event that it is. But it's his loss.

-av

Av, did you even read what I said?
Come on, step up to the plate.

I don't think you are the leader of the UE community, I think some people misunderstood what I meant.
Your web site is the stepping stone for many future explorers or explorers trying to find fellow explorers..
I would say 75% of the media coverage UE gets mentions your site, or indirectly through Ninj's site.
That does place a huge responsibility on your shoulders and I think the burden has become to much. You are trying to do to much with the place. This web site was incredible a year or two back, now it has become a joke in the "Real" UE community. (By Real I mean people who actually explore and don't just talk about it.)

Maybe that is the point of your site though. I ran across many people here who I invited to join CUE, then slowly everybody leaves UER behind. Maybe that should be the focus of your site.

I know you don't owe me anything, I never said you did. I will give you thanks for having a once great web site. You have brought several incredible members to CUE that we may have never found without your site.

I guess my point is that UER seems to have caused a huge riff in the UE Community (UE Community being all explorers, not just UER). It wasn't the L3 situation, it started before that. A web site that in the past brought explorers together seems to be tearing them apart. So what are you going to do about it and what can others do to help you get this train wreck back on track?

I don't see UER as a "train wreck" at all, and I see it doing the same thing that it did 2 years ago. However, I find it strange that your post is quick to say that UER "was once" a great website, but fails to identify what's different about it since then? The only major change is the Level system, which you said wasn't the problem.

I still consider UER to be a great site, and I continue to meet new friends and people to explore with through it. I know many, many people who explore and don't "just talk about it" who don't think UER is a "joke". Maybe you could back up your allegations with fact?

Anyway, to get this thread back on topic:

Couldn't a system be set up where Level 2 members could create a location, which would then be approved or denied by a moderator?

No, this would not work. What would happen if a Level 2 member creates a location that does exist? What then? Do the moderators delete it? Or maybe they merge his content into the existing location (thereby denying him access to it?)

Level 2 is meant only as a stepping-stone on the path to becoming a member of UER. Nobody is supposed to stay at this level for very long, and those that do, obviously do not explore (or do not talk about what they have explored)

Alright, enough of this thread. I posted the details of one of my latest explorations here:

That photo upload system works pretty well, too!

BTW, Av ows you nothing. If you don't like the site, please go choose another, such as Turbozutek's site, deggi5, or whatever other site.

My site (The System) is a closed, view only site that in no way is meant to be anything like UER. You can't login and create locations with ADDRESSES and GPS coordinates for any trusted 'tard to see.

Further, I don't have a forum, because rather than talk about UE... We go and do it.

Just to clear up any confusion.

Chris...

We all had ostriches. My dad had an ostrich farm! I remember one day someone came in and said the high altitude bombing of Kosovo had been a limited success, so we all went out and celebrated… by killing an ostrich and boiling it in kiwi fruit.

I'm pretty sure you mean THIRD? As EurOPEX was a worldwide UE convention and was held to be wildly successful.

Or do you not count it, as you personally didn't attend?

Just want to mention Europex in there. Which would technically make Opex 2005 the third worldwide UE convention.

There have been several International UE conventions in Europe (Cave Clan in Paris, etc), as well as plenty of local events that occasionally have people from other areas (Mouser Week, Clannies, GTAs, Catacomb parties, etc). The idea certainly isn't new

The OPEX in montreal is the second in line of the original OPEX held in Toronto. EurOPEX, NEOPEX, APEX, and any other "-PEX" names are spinoffs but not directly related to the original OPEX event, organized by the OPEX organization commitee.

Wow, so we should have flown this 3l33t team in to sort out EurOPEX???

Shit... I didn't even know! I guess the whole thing was just a waste of time then.

Turbo, now your just trying to get Av's back up (as usual). EurOPEX, from what I hear, wasn't a total and complete waste of time. I wish I could have been there.

Relax guy I was only kidding! It's interesting to hear there is a formal certification procedure for OPEX type events, I had no idea!

I hear Av's back is pretty much permanently up anyways.

Of course there isn't, but there is giving credit where it's due and acknowledging that Europex was a *pex* spinoff name, just like all the others, which did in fact originate with... Opex.

Yes, thanks, I realised that: but you summed it up a lot better Jester! Av's original post kinda implied that events held after were somehow less valid. Sounded a bit elitest so just thought I would clear it up through the medium of mock horror.

This too:

I'll show you off topic mr.

I went to Opex and I walked into a big drain and went under a rope that had garbage on it and I though it was ok to go there but really it was to tell you not to go there cause it was a drop off into a bunch of water. So I fell in up to my... stuff I didn't want cold and wet but I hopped out real quick and then Freak took a picture of me standing there. And I had water proof hiking boots on so now they kept themselves full of water for the whole rest of the walk throughthe drain, which wasn't very exciting excpet for the catwalks and ladders and stuf, the rest of it was just walking for a long time...

UER had the potential to be more than that, but it's become the same thing with a larger user base.

No single forum, website, email list, zine, or book should be the basis for a hobby or pastime (unless you want it to be a cult).

URE.ca is one of many sites that deal with exploring, and it has a world-wide following. That means that there are people of many nationalities here, Male and female, and all ages. And with that being said, there will be disputes, because there are also some here with very abrasive personalities, bad tempers, and hair-triggers. allot of the disputes here begin as misunderstandings, i know.

I would like to offer this for what it's worth. Before anyone decides to go off on any person, take a look at the facts from both sides. And before you take it to a public forum like this one (I may get lectured for this), PM the person you have a dispute with and try to come to some solution. Because dragging "dirty laundry" out in public is not the answer, it will make things much worse.

This is not an attempt to "kiss up" by me. I have never kissed up to anyone in my 46 years, and i never will.
