| | | Also called the Shanghai Tunnels, there are tours that detail the history of certain areas of it. Though from what I have heard, there are many secret doors in various stores throughout the city, many of which are unknown to the owners themselves. I read about this about a year ago, but I have not had a chance to actually explore it myself.
Anyone have any more info on it, or experiences there? [last edit 7/22/2005 11:58 PM by Monty Cantsin - edited 1 times]

| | | I, too am curious about the Shanghai Tunnels. Don't know if there was more follow-up via personal messaging on this thread, Whitesword, but do you have any tips on gaining entrance? I don't even know where to begin. Thanks in advance.
I'll walk down to the Pacific, and there I shall improvise. |

| | | On this weeks Anthony Bourdain "No Reservations" on the Travel Channel they explored the tunnels with the local caretaker/historian (seemed like a UE'r you'd meet on here). It was actually pretty good and they had some interesting history and showed some cool stuff. Made me want to go take a look for myself! Anyways they replay that show quite a bit, The tunnel portion of the show isn't long, but worth a watch for sure.

| | | I did the underground tours about two years back and I can tell you from experience, don't do it. The "local expert" is a hack. Most of the true historians around town will back me on this. He'll lead you through the basements of some of old town's buildings and show you all sorts of junk laying around (who knows how much he dragged down there himself?) I'm sure he thinks he's doing you a service, but I was disillusioned as I and about 15 other "tourists" skulked around under the floor of the Boiler Room and listened to drunk people karaoke above our heads. Now; how to get down there for those of you that want to try it alone. The only entrance I know is the access hatch in the sidewalk in front of the Boiler. If I remember right it was only padlocked. Four pins to pick, and you're in. Doing it on a Sunday at 4 am might work. Of course there are other spots where I've seen remainders of the tunnels. The pantry in the kitchens of McCormick's on 3rd and Oak is a beautiful example of a section of tunnel that was actually reinforced with brick walls and a nice arched ceiling. The only way I know how to get down there is to dress like a waiter and act like the lost new guy. Just exude confidence and you've got it. Good luck and please don't take the damned tour. Fence

HA!So how did this hack get the rights to lead these tours? Sounds like a scam more than anything.

I got in for free. The tour meets somewhere and listen to that Michael guy talk a bunch of hot air. The group walks over to the access hatch. I got in free by just merging into the crowd of tourists and avoided the fees + the first portion of the time wasting talk. The tour is operated by a supposedly non profit organization, but the guy responsible for the tour is a very very possessive guy and act as he's the only one allowed to tell story. If you go on the tour legitimately, he'll make you sign a waiver that includes anti-competitive agreement. It states you agree to not use any knowledge gained from the tour for anything that competes with them, that you will not use photographs you took for commercial purpose or assist others to do so without that guy's written consent. Bright flashlights are prohibited, because it detracts from the guy's story telling atmosphere.
http://cgsmthood.c...i/forms/waiver.pdf http://cgsmthood.c...sponsibilities.pdf The tour. Full of rules, full of bullshit talk. You move 15' at a time, stop, listen to that guy blow hot air for 15 minutes. It doesn't seem that special once you get in. It's not really a secret tunnel, but it's just a decorated basement of a bar/restaurant and it's still used to store bottles they are saving up to claim deposit, which are cleverly hidden behind a curtain. There are empty kegs, water heaters and other plumbing/electrical stuff. The artifacts seems to have been displayed in place, museum style. These are some pictures I took and they're open for viewing to anyone. The pictures are uh.. lame, because the tour is lame. http://www.uer.ca/...fid=1&msgid=383657 [last edit 3/27/2007 11:40 AM by Deuterium - edited 1 times]

| | | Ok, Google didn't like hot linking.
The menace, who talks about ghosts, and other useless stuff. This guy is a bunch of hot air. The tour isn't anything like urban exploration. It's a family event. Lots of parents with kids, 88 minute(of the 90 minute tour) tales for kids included.
