| | | | the ultimate Maglite? (version II) < on 7/21/2005 2:58 AM >
| | | So a while back, I modified a 3D Maglite with a Luxeon III LED. It was hellabright, and most everyone who saw it in action ended up buying one from me. But, the 3D body is a little big... too big for me to comfortably carry around in my pocket. Also, the 3D modded Maglites were direct drive, so the light got dimmer as the batteries wore down. So I decided to improve it... I took a 2D Maglite body, modified the reflector and switch, added a Luxeon III LED (TWOJ bin, for all you hardcore flashlight dorks) on an aluminum heatsink, fed 1000 mA from a regulator circuit board, powered by 8 AA batteries in a special adaptor. How about some comparison pictures? Here's the stock 2D Maglite:
And here's my SilverStar II Mag mod:
(these pictures don't do justice to how far it throws a beam of light... it's like a damn searchlight) Oh, and here's the battery adaptor & business end of flashlight:
Now for some real-life storm drain testing...

| | | Excellent job. My initial reaction to the second picture was, "Why is he doing a beam test with the lights in the room on?". That is an awesome wall of light. What kind of runtime does that thing get?

Thanks! I'm hoping to get at least 4 hours until 50% brightness (stock maglites get around 45 minutes until 50 % brightness). I went with 8 AA's and a buck circuit because it should yield much greater runtil than 2 D's and a boost circuit.

If you'd want the 3D version, I can do those for $65 shipped anywhere in the lower 48 (your choice of color, batteries not included). The 2D version is a lot more complicated, but if someone really wanted one I could build them for $110 shipped. Both versions are the same brightness. I know someone will probably point out that this is more expensive than the EverLed/Diamond/TerraLux LED upgrade "bulbs", but doing it my way is brighter, with vastly superior heat sinking (and therefore, longer LED and circuitry life).

$45 upgraded and shipped back to you. I've never done a 4D Maglite before... It should be slightly brighter than my 2D and 3D Luxeon Maglites, but with incredible runtime.

| | | I finally got around to typing up a how-to for modding a 3D Maglite with a Luxeon LED... http://www.vtunderground.com/bonus/modamag.htm Enjoy!

| | | Any idea if the 3D mod you wrote a how-to on would work on a 4D?

Yes, but you'll need to add a resistor. Here are some good 4D modding instructions: http://kevin.htgk.org/oad4cookbook.php

| | | Would you be able to ship to the UK? If so I may be interested in one.
