Like all UER people, I've only explored your mom.

I can't believe this. Five seconds after I posted that, I saw that your location is St. Paul! I'm dumb.

I only listen to 104.7 Poop. I'm always in deep shit, so I may as well listen to poop.

I just want to say that I don't consider 5meodmt's action to be that severe to warrant all the flaming. Everyone starts off not knowing what kind of community this is. If we push people away on the forums and come off as assholes to them, then you aren't really helping them out are you? He threw a small magnet he found on the outside of a building which apparently has many several more inside. I'd probably have kept it or picked it up and messed around with it and sat it down later instead of chucking it in the river, but that's me, not him. He may be a complete tool, those people do pop up on here from time to time, then again he may be a genuinely interested explorer hoping to meet others like him. You can't make a accurate assumption of someone because they ask where a popular drain is, or because their screen name is based off of a psychoactive substance. So in honor of good diplomacy, 5meodmt, I will give you a chance, maybe we could meet up sometime and chat or possibly explore. I prefer to meet someone and get to know them a little more than a handful of posts on a internet forum before I go making judgements on their character. You can PM me if you are interested in meeting up.

You are probably right; I think it was the callous nature of the post; paraphrasing " I saw the magnet, then I threw it into the river:". A sentence like that just leaves you saying "Why would you do that?". Now sure, the magnet is of no historical value, but still, treating places like playgrounds and laughing about it as if it's commonplace is just wrong.

Dukes; "I was in this really great amusement park, and the main building had these great triangular windows 30 feet tall, haha, so I smashed them with a rock haha, and then went to the rest of the place".
How would anyone react to that? It would come across as if it were my mission was to smash and destroy things. You know, most of the battle over ethics has nothing to do with being honest; it has to do with being part of a group of people whom you'd like to have the same experience; and the person to follow you can't have that if you decided to smash everything you see. Eventually, there is nothing left worthwhile to explore. That's why doing this is stupid; because eventually there is nothing left for YOU either.

I got your tour winner right here pussies, at least he'd crash out trying.

I have never been lost, but I will admit to being confused for several weeks.

Magnets are installed to remove any pieces of metal that might be in the grain.I believe they are installed before the grinders.

So if that's the case here, then someone found the stash of magnets and randomly stuck them to everything. Makes sense to me.

If the rule of thumb is to leave things as you found them, do you leave the magnets scattered or put them back where they came? Assuming of course that you know where they previously were and that they weren't put in their current place by the owner.

5-me...

Yeah, as you've learned here, throwing misc metal stuff into waterways is not cool at all. Dumb people do enough of that... smarter folks are expected to know better. As you're clearly smarter... we hope you'll stick around this board.

Checking with farmer-friends, here's what I've learned. The mysterious metal objects could be:

powered vermin repellants

explosives

moisture detectors

I'll bet it's going haywire in the river then lol...

Seriously, my first time exploring a location, before I even knew there WAS a subculture called UE, I set off a fire extinguisher in the basement garage area just because I'd never used one before.

I didn't intend to be malicious, I knew it could be cleaned up, but still.

Having been lurking around these forums and occasionally posting once in a while for the past couple years, knowing what I know now about UE, I would not touch ANYTHING while exploring anymore.

When I leave a site, you'll never be able to tell I was there, except for the inevitable footprints.

thats what i prefer to do i think teh biggest thing i ever took was a magnet off a fridge of an abandoned cottage on lake erie, i usually leave no tracks and leave everything the way that i found it. the magnet was for a restaurant that my uncle owned so i figure i had rights to it anyways l ol, but yeah now that i am more in ueing on a regular basis i never touch anything i try not even to breathe to hard as i usually don't carry anything with me to poke floors so i tread very lightly and try not to disturb, also asbestos in old places is inevitable so stirring up large amounts of dust could kill you, as for teh guy that threw the magnet in teh river... what if it was a pesticide? you could kill people that go into that water and even if it was something that was completely harmless it still costs money and you would be attracting interest to teh site.

Sounds like a Nyeodyium(sp?) magnets that are used for metal removal in grain batches. Those magnets are incredibly strong for their size. Im willing to bet another upstanding explorer peppered the building with a stash that was found of them. I could easily see the magnets sticking instantly to the metal skin of the building. As far as chucking it in the river, thats just silly to include in the post. It could have been left out.

I go agree however on the hostility towards new members/posters on this board. I had a new bumhole created for me because I wasnt aware of a WindowsXP capability in a different thread. I wasnt even arguing about anything. I posted something and was berated by all the Einsteins, that had nothing nice to say. Rather than attempting to correct me, they decided to bash me as much as possible. I'll never offer any of them any asistance in the future.

Its a shame really.

This is such a secretive hobby people need to watch other peoples backs. Not try to stab them
