I am actually pretty interested in this, especially with the partial loss of Marble Hill. I would be willing to drive a considerable distance to get there...what is a nearby town so I can get a rough estimate? A nuclear powerplant, albeit unused, sounds very cool. Please keep me updated on this trip...

I went there last Thursday and that place was crawling with activity, since it is attached to an active TVA manned substation(count at least 8 TVA trucks with personnel roaming the property in plain view). Not to mention that it was kind of boring. Basically, it looks exactly like the Gaffney site: a bunch of concrete walls with no roof and an unfinished reactor core which consists of a semicircular concrete wall. Good for paintball, not so good for exploring. The one really cool thing though was to see the immensity of the unfinished base of the cooling tower. At first, we thought it was a bridge, but as we got closer we realized it was the circular base of the cooling tower.

AbandonedSC said one of the places had some running around.

Speaking of Marble Hill ... I added numerous photos to my web-site article:

Well if anybody wants to go back to see the place, I'm still game. I just want to let the whole London terror thing blow over before I go all ninja on that place. Probably best to do it on a Saturday or Sunday at around dawn. The fog in the fields would make for some good shots.

Very cool, I have always wanted to check that place out....
From what I heard, they rigged the detonated the explosives to bring down one of the structures, but it did not budge.

i haven't been to visit this place in about a year, but i don't think that the TVA has gotten a wild hair since then and decided to hire security to watch an abandoned structure. there is an active substation next door, and there are personnel there on a semi-regular basis. i have, in the past, explored the facility with the TVA hanging out next door. it's just a matter of being smart on your way there. once you're in, there's very little to worry about. if there's trouble, you can easily hide until it blows over, or book it out of one of the other exits. it's a good idea to have the cover of darkness when you cross the fence, so just before dawn is usually when i go, so i can explore during the daylight. when i go next time, i plan to dress well and take a clipboard. then, if i do get questioned, and they say, "who are you and what are you doing here?" i can respond with the classic "who are you and what are you doing here?" i'll then drop the name of some high-up TVA official, and say that i'm an ecologist working for UT or that i'm a surveyor, or some other difficult-to-dispute story. i'm always in favor of a slick tongue over camo.

I heard it had a good bit of security. IF you feel like a small trip try Gaffney its neat and easy to get in if you know the trick.

That would be my concern, anything that was, could be, or is NUKE is going to have an ass load of security or alarms, etc.

However, the site does sound VERY cool.

Plus I am a sucker for underground stuff.

FYI, I was arrested, fined, jailed for 6 hours, car impounded, etc for tresspassing into the abandoned Yellow Creek Nuclear Reactor, listed under tennessee/tba. This was the culmination of a 2 hour manhunt for me and my party of explorers. The a portion of the site is apparently used to manufacture Israeli missiles, as luck would have it. It took me a month or two to get interested in exploring again (I was caught by the cops once again, doncha know, but they were nice and didn't give a shit). In conclusion, even though I am a kickass, self agrandizing person who got the see the abandoned reactor where the apollo rockets were manufactured - I do not reccomend trespassing on these high level sights, especially during the day. I would provide pics, but the FBI confiscated my film.

Yeap, words of wisdom from one of with first hand knowledge gained the hard way.

I strongly advise anyone who has a shred of common sense to stay clear of all sites of this type, day or night (remember that day is night, to some).
The DOE isn't tolerant of trespassers, and the FBI can and will lean on you (friends and family too) as hard as is needed.

The very fact it was going to be a reactor site means terrorists could try to glean intel to help breach an active facility, or use it to train.
Is it starting to sound like a bad idea?

Just when I thought I was out... they pulled me back in.
