Abandoned Cotton Gin - Caldwell Co., TX

Caldwell County, Texas.
June, 2005.

The day's heat hit a peak of 100 degrees; a number that, for Texas, will soon become a 3 month-long weather trend. Yeah, it was hot. Damn hot. Perfect time for a drive in a nice air-conditioned truck. After about an hour and a half of randomly driving through parts of rural Texas which make Deliverance look tame, I hit Caldwell County.

I originally passed this place doing 75mph. After doing a double take, I abruptly stopped and pulled a U-turn. It's not much to look at from the outside: Large sheets of rusted metal and age-old decaying wood. Perfect for exploring, and exactly what I was hoping to photograph.

The air outside was stifling...the air inside...the smell of rotting wood. Perfect. I'd never known this place existed, nor did I have any clue what a cotton gin would look like until I stepped inside.

Not too bad for a quick trip out into the countryside, eh? Stayed there about an hour and a half with the truck parked in plain view of the road. The place is near the center of a town, and fairly close to the town hall, but nobody bothered me. Then again, the town only has a population of 564 people, but still.

All photos are dumped straight from the camera, and have not been cleaned up nor had their levels adjusted.

( First post, by the way. Hi all! )

Thanks! I -still- have no clue how this place worked...way too much chaos in its design. There are belts, gears, pulleys, and chain-drives everywhere.

Cookie:

Glad you enjoyed 'em!

Caldwell County is at the SE corner of Travis, Hays, and Bastrop Counties, in Central TX. It's about an hour South-East of Austin, if you don't hit the massive amount of traffic on IH-35.

The entirety of the inside of this place was amazing: big pieces of rusted machinery everywhere, small bits of daily life strewn about, and everything abandoned in a hurry. Personally, the thing that caught my eye the most in the place was this photo, not included with the sample I origionaly posted:

39045.jpg (46 kb, 470x608)

The place was abandoned so quickly that full stacks of paperwork were left laying around the office. There were still piles of people's shoes left inside of the building. This is one that somebody thought to decorate.

2Xtreme:

Thanks for the compliments, and for the welcome. I've been around a few UE communities for awhile, mainly photography groups such as the LJ "abandonedplaces" community, as well as the "urban_decay" group. I've always liked the subject matter due to the dramatic, haunting photography of abandoned places.

I was talking with a friend about photography and he decided to show me some of his. He accidently flashed past a photo of a UE he had done while up in Canada, which got us on the subject. I showed him some photos of my past UE's...

And his response: "Man, you HAVE to join this website!"

And viola!

you've come to the right place N Texas may not be in the rust belt but we have our share of rust!

if youre ever in or near Greenville TX 70mi east of Dallas check out the old grain elevator

its one of the most rusted out dilapidated places Ive ever see but more amazing is its still in business! thats one reason I chickened out and didnt go all the way through it (could take several hours its massive) but lights are on in some dark corners that seem unusable and the metal floors are sagging and crumbling and machines all over looking like 1925 or something

Kaanah, nice first post. That place looks pretty interesting. Seems like it wouldn't have so many artifacts because of it's apparent age but that is awesome that it does. I might have to check it out since I'm not far away (South Austin). Of course if you are ever in the area, send me an email.

Hey, I've driven through there several times on my way up to Arkansas. North Texas isn't bad for decay, though...you have a lot of heavy industry if you stay OUT of downtown Dallas. I've seen a lot of decay I want to photo in Grandprarie / Waco / Ft. Worth. You're sure to have something abandoned somewhat nearby. Next time I'm up that way, I'll drop you a line. It sounds interesting, and the rusty old machinery definitely has me curious.

And, RevSM:

Thanks! The oddest thing about this place is that there is absolutely NO graffiti, nothing is broken and/or trashed, and there are still papers laying in the exact same spot for so long that they have an inch of dust accumulated on them. It was...very creepy.

Also, I'm from South Austin as well. Know of anything interesting to photograph in the area?

If you are interested in tunnels, there are several. As far as buildings, things change pretty often. There are a few places in Austin but not necessarily South. A lot of the places there are, get locked up, re-used or torn down pretty quickly. I kinda want to go back to the Austin Athletic Center some time. San Antonio has some (read: lots) stuff too though.

I'll admit that I'm not quite as knowledgeable about tunnels, although I'd be interested in giving the tunnel rat lifestyle a go or two: It sounds interesting. May have to get new batteries for the 4d Maglite, though. Just...haven't stumbled across any old tunnels yet. From the looks of your site, on the other hand, it seems as if you have. Hmm.

As for buildings: I know of a house that needs a bit more exploration. I hit it on a stop 'n go as I was passing through the area, and didn't really get a chance to head inside. If you're looking for a place to explore and you happen to have a GPSr, I can give you the loc.

Thanks, I don't have a GPS though. There are several more houses that I know of in South Austin. I forgot about those. I don't think I've seen this one though.

Nice first post, love the pic.

We should have a local meet up 1993gt40, good idea. The only down side is we are going to have to start finding more places in austin, I wanted to stop in on those hotels/ apartments off I-35 and bin white, but they knocked them down to fast.

I hate that when austin does that. GGRREE

I'd definitely be interested in a meet and getting to see a few of the local UE'ers. Sounds like it could be interesting.

Mox25: I noticed those too...those went down DAMN fast. It seems that the closer you get to Central Austin, the faster they go down, too. Unless it has been cursed by the hand of Dell, that is.

Arch-Image: I spent a total of about 4 hours in the place and wasn't bothered by anybody at all. I very easily could have spent quite a bit more there. It was just interesting to try and figure out what everything did, and attempt to find out why everybody left in such a hurry.

Yeah, I'd be up for a local meetup too. That's not to say that people from other places shouldn't come too though. Between here and San Antonio I'm sure we can find enough people and places to check out. Tunnels are always accessible and easy to get into and depending on the timing I'm sure we could find several buildings.
