Ok, finally a real update. The mission the first teaser was mentioning. A closed down (max security previously, I believe) prison. trying to find the history I had for it, but I seem to have lost all I had found...

Link should be under latest mission, click the pic...

you may need to refresh if it's not looking new, cache and all that web lingo...

Thanks. The really ironic thing was that we had driven by where it was about a dozen times while searching for it. All along it was on the property of something else, and just out of view...

I wish we had more than one camera when we went, I'd forgotten mine at home so we only had Pixie's, and the batteries were running low so we didn't get good pictures of everything. That and not having a tripod with us (and the speed the guard made us move along through the place) sucked, since there were lots of potentially very cool photo ops there...

We did intend to go back and see about getting some better pics, but the guard is different and the smaller buildings were already being demolished as of a few weeks ago...

Wow... I can't believe how much destruction there is...

How long has that place been closed?

Cool write-up and pics by the way....

I'm sure it's been closed for at least a decade. I had a bunch of info which I have completely lost, so I've got to dig in and redo the research...
People smashed virtually everything, ripping into walls, trying to burn all sorts of things, you name it... If the place hadn't been so vandalized, it would have been absolutely amazing to photograph... as is, it was still great to get to wander through it, but it was pretty sad to see that much destruction. It was also too bad that the welding company had removed all the cel doors so they could use the cels...

Yeah, there was a guy caught doing that actually. But a lot of the damage was also the local teens going to drink/get stoned and smash/burn everything they could...

That's a great story; reminiscent of our "exploring with the curious sheriff" incident at the Saratoga county homestead.
"Well, since you guys are curious about this place and weren't inside, uhh, do you want to look around?"

Us "Ohh, uuhhm, oh I guess so"

Also reminds me of taking dirt roads , cutting cross lots, e.t.c.

I got your tour winner right here pussies, at least he'd crash out trying.

What was the name of the institution when it was open?

That's part of the problem, I seem unable to keep the name in my memory for more than about a second and a half... I found it out, forgot it, found it out, forgot it, found it out, wrote it down, and lost the paper and forgot it... I do remember having a hell of a time finding much useful info. I can't even remember the name of the premiere that had worked there... Bennet ? Barret ? something like that...

Looked around on the internet a little. I think it was called the Haney Correctional Centre. Looks like it was former Premier Barrett that worked there, and subsequently closed it down.

Found this in transcribed boring old debates from the Legislature from 1990:

The case I want to point to -and I'm glad the members for Dewdney (Mr. Pelton and Hon. Mr. Jacobsen) are here, or at least one of them - Is out there in Maple Ridge. It's the old Haney correctional institute. They were certainly marginally involved in that, or at least they were aware of it. The old Haney correctional institute is about four miles northeast of Haney in Maple Ridge, up off Dewdney Trunk Road; most of us know that area.

The correctional institute was built in 1957 for $4 million. That's in 1957 dollars; it would be a lot of bucks today. It was a state-of-the-art medium-security prison. As a parenthesis, it's where Dave Barrett started his career in prison reform and carried it right through to the point where he closed the prison in 1975 when he was Premier of British Columbia.

It was built to hold 400 inmates. It had vocational facilities for construction, carpentry, sheet metal, motor mechanics, landscaping and, at the time, a barber college.

On August 24, '57, in an article by Ian McDonald, the Vancouver Sun said this about the place: "The handsome three-storey building looks like a high school." Indeed, it still does. It looks a lot like Vancouver Technical Secondary School on East Broadway in my own riding. To quote McDonald further, he says: "Standing imposingly on a hilltop five miles from this pleasant Fraser Valley town, it commands a sweeping view of the valley, Garibaldi Park and, on a clear day, the waters and islands of Georgia strait Trees will soon line the broad road to the main gates." Indeed, they do now.

The Province -when it used to report on these kinds of things in detail - said in 1957: "The $4 million institution, located in mountain resort surroundings, is one of the most advanced of its kind in North America." Now get this: it noted that almost half of the five acres of buildings on this site –– 220, 000 square feet of buildings - were classrooms and vocational training space. So, indeed, it was very much like the technical school in Vancouver East.

In 1975 It was closed down as a correctional facility and became a vocational training facility. It was transferred to the Ministry of Education in 1975 Patrick McGeer, the then minister, announced some spending on it in 1977. It became part of the Pacific Vocational Institute in 1978.

********************************************************************************

Clifford Olson spent time there in 1957 for stealing a power boat in Richmond. I guess that was before his serial killing day's.

Couldn't find any original era photographs, that would have been an interesting comparison after seeing your photos...

Interesting pics..and a bit sad..sort of. I spent almost three years there 1968-71 for a drug charge back in the days when they gave out serious time. I could probably fill you in on much of what you don't know about the place from the photos. There was only the one 'cell block' tier 1 and that was either bad asses or protective custody. There was a huge dining hall as well down from the cells. There were old cells in the basement, but the 'digger' was up in the hospital area....there, the guards could at whim soak you down with a firehose.

Courses ranged from academics, mostly high school upgrading, to Drafting, and various shop classes...auto mechanics, heavy duty mechanics, electrician, carpentry, painting and decorating, plumbing, metal fabricating, you name it, it was there. There was another prison, a camp, just outside the rear part of the property called 'Pine Ridge Camp' minimum security and they ran a sawmill.

The floors used to be highly polished terazzo...and the main tiers were dorms called houses....house 6, 7, 8 were on the upper floor, as was house 5 which was the intake for new inmate. House 1 was the cell block, House 2,3,4 were on the first floor. 4 and 8 were mostly kitchen crew....were they actually learned to be cooks. There was also a separate dining hall, a smaller one for the guards.

It was not all maximum security....there were minimum levels as well...and medium. People with that clearance could leave the institution and work outside the gates.

Kind of interesting to see the photos. I did wander outside the place in1985 when I was doing some survey work for a small subdivision nearby. It was still in good shape then. Too bad a building with so much potential has been so destroyed.
