| | | What's in your first aid kit? < on 6/25/2005 5:43 AM >
| | | I'm trying to get my gear built up again.. just wondering what all of you carry in terms of first aid (yeah, I'm paranoid about cuts and the like). I found a pretty nice 118 piece kit at Target today for $12.99, complete with a soft zipper case. The same kit is $19.99 on drugstore.com. It seems to have most of the stuff I'd need for most minor injuries encountered doing UE (or most other stuff), including stuff for insect stings/bites. I'm going to add an antihistamine to it, but other than that I'm happy with it. Could even make a makeshift temporary splint for a broken finger with what's in it. http://www.drugsto...39&trx=29384&tab=0 is the kit, good deal at Target I think. | | | I don't have a first aid kit. I don't carry absolutely anything like that. Yeah, I'm a bit stupid maybe. Probably I should get something basic.

Same goes for me, I understand why people would take that stuff. I just don't care to, one day I will probably wish I did though. Oh well.

| | | I've carried an old army style individual first aid kit for years backpacking. A lot like this one: http://www.actiong...og%2Flevel3c%2Etam Possibly add a couple pieces of hemostatic gauze to help control bleeding. http://www.actiong...og%2Flevel3c%2Etam or http://www.actiong...og%2Flevel3c%2Etam With that kit, a good knife/multi-tool and a roll of duct tape, I'm pretty much set for anything that needs immediate care. I also keep a 40 inch by 20 inch x 3/8 inch sheet of foam in my backpack to help protect the contents, and my back from being poked by sharped cornered objects in the bag. This makes a damn good splint so maybe i should count it too. Oh and I also try to carry some form of emergency communication. Either a cell phone or a handheld radio (preferably HAM 6m, 2m, or 70cm but even FRS/GMRS is better than nothing).

| | | On an unrelated note to first aid, but to health I was thinking carrying one of those bottles of hand sanitizer gel crap might be a good idea. I've heard about people accidentally having their hands come into contact with bird poop, mold, and the like. Maybe it wouldn't completely eliminate the risk of sickness or infection, but it would probably help. For minor cuts and scrapes it would be a good idea to use before bandaging yourself up so as to minimalize germs in the open wound. Then again it wouldn't be practical to whip out a little bottle of gelled alcohol while you are gushing blood at an alarming rate. Hehe.

| | | I dont always carry one but when I take my pack there is always one in it. small Johnson & Johnson $1.99 first aid kit from the dept store approx 4"x5"x1" (throw their stuff out keep the box) tape 4x4 bloodstoppers butterfly closures large bandaid medium bandaid knuckle bandaid sliver gripper brand tweezers (REI) tick remover needle ammonia inhalant iodine swab pad razor blade tecnu brand poison ivy wash sting-eze brand benzocaine wipe naproxen aspirin sample size eye wash (Clear Eyes) amazing but it all fits and the box has a latch that wont pop open its smaller than it needs to be I could carry a larger one but this is such a good little box it was not set up for u.e. just e. in general biggest "self treatable" hazard around town seems to be lacerations and punctures

Well, I've been through first aid/cpr classes a couple of times (most recent being January of this year) - the training has come in handy at work. So far though, I haven't had to use much beyond bandages while UEing. Hopefully it stays that way.

| | | im usually to dis-organised to bring a kit, but if i do it usually includes some band-aids, some disinfectant spray, some uber tape (a.k.a stick on stitches for if i pull a boo boo, thats really all. Theres not really much to take on trips, you dont need medicaion like antihistamines cause you should take one first if you have a chance of an allergic reaction... but do take a panadol amd and person meds you need.
Im bored... message me on msn :) [email protected] (dont ask why its so long:P *hangs head in shame*) |

| | | I don't have one. I'm not intended to get hurt. (My friend used a similar excuse in air force pilot course interview. His knees would have broken if he had jumped with a parachute. "But I came here to fly...", he said. Apparently he wasn't going to get shot down)

| | | While I explore, I try to carry as little as possible with me. I do carry the a few band-aids, tape, and aspirin with me already. I also have a fully stocked first aid kit in my vehicle so if something bad does happen, I am not too far away from it.

| | | Anything that is in the first aid kit at work is in mine. This includes various bandages, generic neosporin, blood clotting spray, sterile needles (for removing splinters), an ace bandage, asprin, and tums. I dont have a neat box for it or anything i just have it all thrown in my pack so when I really need it I probably wont be able to find it. [last edit 6/28/2005 7:23 PM by thetrio - edited 1 times]

Unfortunately, antihistamines make many people drowsy - if I take a Benadryl (or anything with Diphenhydramine HCl), I'm knocked out cold for 6-8 hours. "Non drowsy" antihistamines make my heart race, and still knock me out. It's all in a small bag that stays inside my back pack - which goes everywhere I go anyway. School, work, exploring, etc.

| | | I keep some ammonia "wake the fuck up" pads in mine, only because I found them in the first aid kit at work. Also, I have some weak ankles, so I tossed in an ACE wrap just to be on the safe side.

| | | I should probably carry some bandages I can quickly slap on. I don't think I'll bother with the more hardcore gear since I pass out from the sight of blood, so I wouldn't be able to properly fix myself or others :\ But who knows, maybe in the case of a real emergency the adrenaline would keep me conscious and out of shock...

| | | I've got a small hiker's kit that fits in my pocket, basically it holds a few bandaids, dressings and alchohol wipes. I don't like being laden down with too much stuff.. and have never needed anything more than this. In a pinch larger dressings/splints etc. can be fashioned from surrounding materials (even my shirt if need be!). Usually a knife isn't thought of as a "first aid" item, however along with it's many other uses it can come in handy for all kinds of emergency situations. Knowledge of first aid isn't a bad skill to have either...

| | | I typically carry a small kit with bandaids and some kind of cleaner (iodine pads, what have you) but I always have my EMT kit in the car nearby. Oh, and lots of extra gloves - lots and lots of glove.s
