Reduces visual clutter and keeps the forums fast loading. Plus if some people are interested in more than one subject (e.g. draining, UEing, etc.) that's going to be a slew of icons besides their name. I concur, I like the UER interface, but with more and more images on the thread pages it's going to cause slower loading. Even though they are mere kilobytes, they will kill those with dialup connections. It would just be another way to keep more people away from UER if we put them on every post.
