Was the site offline 19th and 19th of June?

Hi. I've justa had a week end almost devoid of UER.CA. Every time I typed in the URLs of www.uer.ca, http://uer.ca http://www.uer.ca I'd get redirected to the default search page as if the site did not exist or there was no DNS entry for it. Even links to the site from Google or my favorites did not work.

Anyone else experience this? Anyone (Av?) know the reason for this. Or am I the only one?

I don't know if it's the site, but recently I've been having major DNS resolution problems at home and at work for many webpages. some of them include uer, hamsexy, and even /. The site may have very well been down, but there may also be a wide DNS problem...

Get a life!

P.S. I was happy though there was a failure at my job so I had to explain people how to work with their systems, otherwise I would've had a boring 6-hour shift.

I was out exploring; and hence didn't notice.

Chris...

We all had ostriches. My dad had an ostrich farm! I remember one day someone came in and said the high altitude bombing of Kosovo had been a limited success, so we all went out and celebrated… by killing an ostrich and boiling it in kiwi fruit.

I had the same problem. Tried to find the site two or three times and kept getting a 404.

I'm a blatant waste of time and resources.

Me too. I checked it maybe 3 times to see if it was back, then I went out exploring with friends.

Our DNS server went down. Krenta helped out with a backup server, but it took a while to update.

Apparently there was some kind of a vulnerability in BIND, which a lot of DNS servers run on.

Thank you, Captain Obvious.

It's unlikely Av's provider would let me slave one of my DNS servers to theirs, so if he wants reasonably robust DNS service he's going to have to put up with a few technical RFC violations to get it, under the current setup. He and I talked very briefly about implementing a more flexible and controllable DNS setup for UER, but in the meantime, WYSIWYG.
