| | | looks like remains of a WWII-era munitions plant, of which there were ~70 across the midwest. after the war, congress decreed that they should be turned into refuge/reserve/etc IE: Illinois Ordnance Plant --> Crab Orchard National Wildlife Refuge 44000 acres in southern illinois, outside Marion. Kingsbury Ordnance Plant --> Kingsbury Fish and Wildlife Area 13454 acres in northern indiana, south of Laporte.
When the gov't wanted land before WWII, the took it. LOTS of it. Since most of the plants were useless after 1945, they've been turned into industrial parks, abandonments and wildlife refuges. Usually with a shooting range on the grounds. Kingsbury has the best deer-hunting in Indiana. Go figure.
